Title: I'm not conforming.
Post by: zuhane on August 12, 2011, 10:19:18 PM
Don't get me wrong. The concept is perfect, the sequel looks amazing, and I respect the idea.

However, I've just played Deus Ex. Yeah, that games that loads of people name the 'best game ever'. I think it's
absolutely horrible. The pacing is bad, the lighting is so dim that you need mods to see properly, feels very unfair every
time you die, like it's a matter of trial and error, there's little explanation of how anything works, and it's just insanely difficult,
even for someone like me who'd consider themselves a veteran gamer. I'm sorry. Maybe I've broken a commandment, but I'm
really not impressed with this game.

I've never played this game either. I don't even know what it's about.

I guess I could check... but I don't feel like it. I guess if I do, I should not be expecting all that much.

The thing is, Deus Ex was a marvel of a game.

For its time.

Also, the darkness actually is part of the gameplay. The darker the area you're walking around in, the more stealthy you can be. If you can't see jack, well, neither can the enemy. In theory.

I have no idea who Jack was, but he didn't seem to add to the fun of the game.

I'm pretty new to Deus Ex. I was given a copy of it through Steam about a year ago, when I mentioned that I's never played it. I'm able to take things with a grain of salt, and I'm capable of appreciating things and remembering the period they were made for/in. Perhaps this is why I found the game to be something amazing. Perhaps not the golden god that everyone else sees, but but still a great game. I'll be blunt: You're trying to see things with a modern outlook, and it's clouding your vision. You're expecting things to be player-friendly, even when they have no reason to be. You're expecting things to be easy when they're new. You're expecting things to be drawn out and explained to you instead of learning by doing. Perhaps I'm wrong and you're just not communicating clearly enough for me, but it just seems like you're forgetting what era the game is from. Has it aged beautifully? Not really. Is it still good? Definitely. It's reflective of the era, even if it's not quite up to standards.

Quite simply, shame on most of you.

Deus Ex is amazing and anyone who thinks otherwise is a [string of racial slurs].

I agree with Archem %100
Main reason why I can play Morrowind (looks like crap, plays badly) or Daggerfall (same as above, but worse) and still love the **** out of them.

I got Deus Ex during Steam's summer sale. I've been meaning to play it but I have a bajillion other games that I've also been meaning to play, and Deus Ex is near the bottom of the list because I'm terrible at FPS games. The robot at the end of the tutorial forced me to crawl around the room for half an hour until I found the password buried in the corner.

I've never been able to find things myself very well.  For example, when I started playing Legend of Zelda I was so lost I couldn't even figure out how to do anything but move.

That robot is the biggest bullshit in any tutorial ever. It's not very reflective of the actual game at all. Anyway, yeah, I agree completely with Archem. If you look at Deus Ex with modern videogame standards, it blows dicks. If you don't, it's easy to see why people say it's so amazing. Also, how far did you get anyway? Pretty much everyone seems to find the Liberty Island level completely awful, so if that's all you've played, try pressing on a bit. Also I don't get the insanely difficult bit at all. I am very definetly not that great at videogames, and I can beat Deus Ex with relative ease. What difficulty did you set it to? You have to keep in mind, back in the time Deus Ex was made, hard actually meant hard.

Also, it's one of the first FPS RPGs ever.

I'm playing on hard, and it's not that bad. Granted, I'm basically the ****, and I tend to play stealth-element games with unmatched caution, but still, it's not too tough.
