Title: Do you sometimes miss the trolls?
Post by: Grandy on September 29, 2011, 11:13:01 PM
Yeah, they were raging and annoying. But there is no denying this place was much more livelier with them around.

When I was a more active admin, I was of the opinion that most of the members here were programming RPGs because they sort of kind of wanted to be in an epic storyline themselves. So I really tried to jazz things up with long, dramatic speeches and relatively ineffectual tactics against the trolls to make the stakes seem higher.

I was an insane, insane man. But it was fun.

I miss being awesome...

Put simply: there were more members.  More members means more interesting points of view, not everyone feels like they have to contribute to each topic, no-one notices when someone disappears for a while...

If I started an RP now and you guys in this topic didn't want to play it, I'd already be out most of the potential players 0_o

That's one of the reasons I came back.  I feel like trying to help it ease into activity again.  I never meant to be away forever, after all.

Yeah, the reason it's so silent isn't due to the lack of trolls, but the large amount of people who left...

All the trolls added was drama. Though of course, drama can be pretty entertaining, some times.

What I really miss are people making games, myself included.
It's harder and harder for me to work on games. My first game was, in retrospect, a POS, but I got a huge amount of stuff done quickly because I wasn't worried about every little thing. Now the games I make are much, much better in terms of graphics, storyline, and balance, but each and every part takes a hundred times more work.

It doesn't help either that, even after homework, I had like 9-10 hours free every day in college and only have like 3-4 free with a job, some of which I use on friends and TV.

Speak for yourselves.

I am currently coding and prepping my bosses for Mirror, as well as storyboarding an animated trailer for halloween.

As for troll

U MAD BRO?

Well two jobs doesn't give too much time on game making, out of my three days off, I spend an entire one working on the game, and that's been going on for about 7 months now. I have a lot of threads through out the internet, but i stopped updating them cause each time i updated them, it was really nothing significant. So, come halloween, it'll be better. So maybe then I'll pull my game thread out from the charas archives (it's there) and update it.

Hey, man. I'm trying to learn real programming here.
Hard work.

I'm too lazy to get any real work done. I'm all ideas and concepts, but I just don't have the will to actually sit down and work.

I'm more of a short-winded project person. Animated avatars and ****. Less than a month, instant gratification.

I blame facebook, steals people's time. They don't want to make games anymore. Poor future generations with no creativity.

Got some projects on hold, turns out this life thing is a lot more demanding than I thought it was 5 years ago when people blamed it.

I'm working on a dungeon crawler in Processing, although I don't have anything to show yet since I broke it while working on the dungeon loading code and with it being the start of the academic year I've been too busy to sit down and fix it. BufferedReader is just a terrible thing.

Charas is quiet, but I don't think it's dead by any standards.

I'm still working in 6502 (NES STUFF), I might have something to show.

Someday.

I've literally had no time to do anything the past month.  Some days I am in the music building for 12 hours without leaving.  Its just hard to do stuff.   Sorry about being pretty inactive lately, just kinda busy.  Not to mention I haven't had internet at my apartment since we moved in last month.  We just got it this past week.

An idea of mine seems to be a lot more possible with C# than it did with Python.
Surprisingly, it's not a game. It is, however, pretty cool...if I can ever finish it.

I've had an idea that had a lot to do with colors for a few years now, but my complete laziness won't allow me to do anything with it.

It's more style than substance, anyway.

I make games all the time (just finished one Friday)! Then again I'm forced to do them in class...

If anyone is interested in learning how to make games the "real" way, let me know. I've made games in Java, C++, C# and Javascript (HTML 5 canvas) and I'm a 5th year student at UW Madison for computer science, so I know a thing or two. I'd be happy to write up some tutorials or help someone if RPG maker isn't living up to them.

As for the trolls, I don't miss them at all! I didn't come to visit charas to deal with trolls, if I wanna F*** with someone, I'll just go to the bars and give s*** to the drunk douche bags and drama queens who try to start fights. Those are the real life trolls :p

I don't miss the trolls. Besides, we still have Lucas and Archem.

I suppose I wasn't here long enough to see the trolls.  Was I missing much?

Not really, I think.
Judging from the archives before Bluhman nuked it from orbit, all Rafflesia did was call people fags. Main reason it caused drama is because Charas was apparently high-strung as it was.

Unless we're talking about Dom, in which case no. I don't miss his shitty attempts at trolling.

There was lots of inrigue! Trolls contacted people behind the scenes to stir up trouble! The internet spilled over slighty into rl! A whole epic board was created that only old members could see to organise against the troll invasion! Another forum invaded the trolls ad defeeeated them!!!!

No, seriously, you didn't miss much.

IT WAS AWESOME!!!

(It wasn't.)
It was.
It was and wasn't.

I unfortunately missed the Troll invasion for some reason, but was there for the Aftermath.

And Sanctuary wasn't for old members, but for those with 800 posts. So I couldn't get in because I tend not to talk much.
Ah, I remember seeing "Sanctuary" on the "Who is Online" page and wondering "Where the hell is this!?".
And then bringing it on one thread and have pretty much everyone tell me "it no exists!".

So much drama back then... and drama usually is entertaining.
But I wouldn't necessarily want the Trolls back.
Just a little more life would be pretty nice.

And yes, Dominicy's "trolling" was just... lame.

Looking back at the trolls, and having been there myself, they were not really being all that. I think charas was just bored and was asking for drama. Almost cannibal-trolling itself.

I miss Red Fox.

I miss Red Fox.
He never started as a troll, sadly. He just turned to the dark side. He was charas' Anakin Skywalker.

I remember another troll. I just can't remember his username. He tended to post in my project threads.
:edit:
ZE
was his name.

I didn't even know that had happened.

Well, back into the basement I go.
