Now that I have your attention, here's what I wish to discuss:
Atheists are stupid and need to shut up.
Now I think after all the years I've been somewhat lurking here, people know I'm not the kind of person who will just spout that for no reason, and that by "group X needs to shut up" I don't mean EVERYONE in group X, so when I say atheists, keep in mind I mean a specific vocal kind of atheist. The kind that is not an atheist like me (AKA The-Guy-Who-Has-No-Religion-But-Whatever-Dude-You-Believe-In-What-You-Want-And-More-Power-To-You).
SO
I've noticed an increase in the number of anti-religion guys around the web. They are not only atheists, they are the guys who not only don't believe in God, they also feel the need to berate and act superior to anyone who believes in any God. Why? Because they feel they are in the right. Ober the years, religion in general became the "evil thing we must fight". Religion became the same as misinformation, abuse of power, manipulation.
And know what? Yeah, a great deal of religion is like that.
HOWEVER
These guys do not settle for attacking the manipulators, misinformative people on top of religion. Oh, no, they go for the believers, the ones who have no fault at all. They go yell at the guy who wears a crucifix, instead of the guy yelling at the guys wearing crucifixes to kill all homossexual. And they think both guys are the same.
Now why am I writing this impromptu rant? Well, someone on 9gag posted something (likely a repost) I can't be bothered to find, but will describe; it was a charge with two panels, in the first one, a priest is hitting a man in the head with a cross yelling "Atheist! Scum! Sinner!" and so forth. In the second panel, the atheist is trying to break the cross and the priest is saying "Whoa, whoa! I want so respect here!".
Eh.
Then I go to the comments section, and everyone is like "Man, this is so true, religion is stupid and arrogant and everyone who believes in it is stupid", and when I mean everyone, I mean EVERYONE. There was one guy posting there that said he believed in God. He was promptly shut up with calls of "grow up and stop believing in magic!" and "that's because you're ignorant" if it was real-life instead of the internet I can guarantee you he'd have been publicly lynched.
Then I compared the posts to the panels, and noticed an inversion here.
The atheists were breaking the cross, then when the priest went "Dude what, stop that", they threw themselves in the ground yelling "You're forcing your opinions upon me!"
And the worst is they actually believe it!
They really think someone saying he is religious is somehow offensive to your status as an atheist, and that it's wrong to try and believe in life after death, and that all which they don't know are definite lies told by definite liars. Everyone is quick to judge religion as the "masses being brainwashed" without realising that right now, atheists are the masses, and the brainwashing is what they are doing with this herd effect, berating anyone who thinks differently.
I'm not sure I'm making myself clear here. It's hard to come up with the proper words when you're mad at ranpant ignorance.

Agreed. It's like the witch hunts all over again, only it's the people who believe in God who are being persecuted. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. There's an issue here where an atheist group up North is trying to use the law in its favor to punish a courthouse that has a nativity scene on its lawn. While it technically violates separation of church and state and is likely to be forcibly removed, it's asshats who can't be tolerant of others that give a group a bad name.
-
Believe or not believe, not being to tolerate others for what they believe or not believe, is still the same if you believe or not believe.
If that makes sense.
-
It doesn't. Mostly awful sentence structure.
-
Man, that was Nandez levels of bad, HTML.
But yeah. Agreed through and through.
*stares at Lucas*
ed: To sum up my feelings, Archem's signature.

Lucas is in this topic?
-
No, but he IS that type of atheist.
I love the dude like a brother, but goddamn he's a prick about religion.
-
Oh.
Yeah lucas this goes to you too.

Unfortunately it can be quite annoying for the atheist who just wants a good debate when the religious side isn't offering anything remotely solid to back their own argument. Although I agree that atheists should leave religious people alone when in the real world, when it comes to a debate topic, the religious person should have come in armed or not bothered at all.
-
What I meant is that a religious person who bickers on with a lesbian, is the same as an atheist who bickers on with a catholic priest. There's room to suggest one's belief (or non-belief), but prodding is what sets people off. Whichever side of the coin you are.
-

Things is, there is no debate. At least as far as I saw, atheists just called the believer names whenever they could and called it a day.
-
You're saying that there are religious pricks, just like there are atheist pricks? Yeah, that's a known fact. One existed before the other, but they're now about equal.

[...]When it comes to a debate topic, the religious person should have come in armed or not bothered at all.
Somewhat unfair, given that religion is largely faith-based, and it's difficult to have solid facts that prove the existence of a higher power. If strong enough evidence actually existed beyond the intelligent design argument, the debates wouldn't exist. God would be a fact, not a debatable topic.
-
It all comes down to the 'battle against ignorance' impulse that a lot of people have. If you believe that someone is deluding themselves, you try and make them realise their mistake. The trouble is that some people take it too far and push too much. The only way it really works is if religion is private, because as you said, debating it is practically impossible.
-
Us atheists don't need to be dicks if religious people could debate on a scientific level. But then again, saying "SHUT UP THE BOOK SAYS SO" is nice and easy, isn't it?
EDIT:
On contribution to your thread, I say you're being blind. Whether it's atheists, Christians, Muslims, Jehova Witnesses or whatever religion you pull out of your ***, people will act this way. It's not because they're atheists, it's because humans don't like to be wrong. So get something valid to rant about next time.

I haven't read any of the posts in this thread yet but I swear if any of you has taken "religion" to mean "Christianity" I'm going to snap some spines.

I'm an atheist! :D

Largest problem is that if one person of one faith, politic, or country expresses a feeling / thought / idea about anything we like to assume that all people of similar background think the exact same way. What people don't realize is that we're living in a secluded society these days when being the same as everyone else isn't really an option because of all the freedom of choice. And religion doesn't have the same power of people anymore. Neither does a government.
If someone says that he's a priest people misjudge him as a child molester, if a person says he's a Buddhist people assume that he's a vegetarian, pacifist and thinks life is an illusion. Problem is that people of faith doesn't have a shared mind link. Mother Theresa and George Bush are both Christians but we can't claim that she would've done the same choices that he did.
Same goes for atheists and people of any faith alike.
One persons opinion doesn't reflect the thought of millions of people although there might be some people who shares a common thought. Over here we have priests who don't believe that Mary was a virgin or that bible is 100% truth while other christians would claim that those things are the most important thing in the world. And that's just fine, people are doomed to freedom of thought.
I have christian friend who's circumcised which confuses a lot of people, same as people assume that all muslims and jews are circumcised. Things differ between place and place.
What people do these days though. Is to grab one book, or theological argument and bash it into the heads of all those who don't share their opinion. There are christians who represent the bible, muslims referring everything to the Quran, jews to the Tanak, buddhists to Buddha and so on. Just as well as there are atheists who refer to the big bang theory, evolution or anything scientific. And even nationalists / patriots who keeps referring to how things used to be or how the government want things to be.
These people simply accept this one piece of information and doesn't question it or put it in context to how the people / society or world looks like these days.
Ignorant people are on all sides, people who simply follow and doesn't think.

Oh yeah I just remembered this lololololol
You atheists will love this.

Guh. Too much repetition. Either in points or personality. I'm done here.
-

A woman obsessed with making other people suffer like Christ suffered on the cross. Do your homework on Mother Theresa, I hate George Bush but goddamn he's the better choice in this one.

I never said she was the most huggable woman in the world, point was that two christians don't think the same. And those two don't. It's about overlapping circles, not one big circle shared by all.

Sure, but pick a better example next time.
-
But atheists are usually much nicer than the so called "Christians".
In my personal experience, nope.
-
I'm going to guess that nobody ever beat you up at school at school for being an atheist. So, in MY personal experience, 'Christians' are much worse people.
nobody beat people up on my school. At all.
We relied on psychological warfare.
-
So, today, this girl I know from dA posted on the forum about how hard it is to deal with her father's death*?
Not born in a country with the majority being religious people so atheists are the ones trying to force beliefs upon the minority over here. Unless it's jehovas or mormons.
It's lovely trying to teach kids about religion when all of them sees it as mental illness, low self-esteem and lack of responsibility.
Was it a roman catholic or more of a lutheran protestant btw?
-
Nobody in my school was beat up for being an atheist or a Christian because I don't live in a toilet
MEGABURN
-
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

So basically it's the same reason why christianity even became a large group to begin with. You just realized that you had to spread the world about this teaching that can save your immortal soul without having to sacrifice your family cow.
Also, I'm kinda wondering how Brazil must be doing church wrong.
-
If it matters any, Lucas, I apologize for being a bit of a dck.
Didn't realize how much of an awful...erm, toilet Brazil is regarding basic tolerance and ****.
It would kind of helped to know that sooner, though. So...yeah.
-
How mature.
Anyway, just gonna say this before anyone else does.
The reason why so many young atheists (and I will include myself in that group) feel the need to be so vocal about their faiths. They have been raised in societies where not being religious is just not a choice they had. Everyone prays, everyone goes to church, and all non believers burn in hell. And then one day they wake up, find out they don't believe in any of that, and realize that there is no hell waiting for them and that god did not burn down their houses. And you know, with that comes a great deal of freedom. You actually become allowed to think about whatever you want without fear of eternal otherworldly punishment, and that's awesome. And well, you suddenly know that you just have to spread the word, because it is really good to you, it is good to all your new atheist friends, you got no more reason to hate gays, atheists and other religions, there is no hell, you don't wake up at 6 to go to church and listen to a guy who is probably a pedo trying to teach you about morals... You just get happy with all that, and like I said before, not giving people the choice to be happy is kind of being a dick. I myself have known ex-Christians who hated it (and me) when I tried to convert them and they got pretty mad, but once they changed their minds, they spent pretty much whole days talking about how much religion sucks and how much lack of faith rocks. And then after a few months they calm down and are ready to become productive members of society again. I think the whole "I hate religion" thing is fine to do with your friends to get the steam out, but thing is, lots of those newly converted people decide to go on youtube or the internet in general to do that, and in turn, give atheists a bad name.
Really, fruck only thinks that I'm that kind of atheist because he's my friend and I talk about things like this with him all the time. But I never go out of my way to troll youtubers or attack Christian sites. I only try to convert people I care for. :P
I'm sorry Lucas, I can't bring myself to agree with you.
You're an atheist and want others to be because you're happy that way? Fine. Problem starts with generalizations and certain comments you make.
When someone like you who supposedly is not newly-converted feels the need to say the guy teaching morals is "probably a pedo", it just really really irks me.
It's the same as a christian going "but at least with christianity we won't become rapists like those atheists probably will".
It's little implications like that that make me mad and rant. Unfortunately, your post was full of it.
-
Lucas is blind to what he is. He's the atheist that people don't like, even if he's not an extremist.

I agree with Archem 100%.
-
Trying to "convert" people is generally seen as a pretty dickish, annoying thing to do. It's like a more annoying, offensive version of those telemarketers who always ring to try to get you to change electricity company. ****ing hate those guys.
-
Yeah, but at least most churches try to convert people by being nice and homely to them. Atheists convert people with "You're ****ing stupid to even think that, what's wrong with you?" lines.
-

Yeah, no. That's not how the churches approach me. You know, that's what I like about Muslims. They care that I'm atheist, but they don't try to convert me.
-

That's because all people are Muslims.
-
That's because all people are Muslims.
Make a point or don't post.
-
Shut up, Drace.
*angry face*
-
You guys still talking about this?
Is not like any of you are gonna reach a consensus.
-
Yeah, pretty much.
-

Charas was the first forum I ever joined, back in my first months discovering the Internet.
Ever since that day, all I ever remember here is talking about nothings at lenght.
Why should we stop now?
-
As someone who doesn't believe in X or Y, Lucas is not a representative of my thoughts okay thank you.
