So the people who ran the site uploaded the copyrighted material and sold it for profit?! The bastards!
...Oh, wait, it was free and users uploaded it. Well then.
-
So wait, if I'm reading correctly, they're charging these people because they owned a website where the users uploaded copyrighted material? Who the **** comes up with these goddamn laws. Rgdfsgngnuiogneroiugnetiuonh340tergwd I thought SOPA and PIPA were going to give them these powers? Meaning, they weren't able to do **** like that as of now. I don't know, this is very frustrating. Megaupload was the best. Now I have to find another site to back up all my **** on. What the ****.
-
Rgdfsgngnuiogneroiugnetiuonh340tergwd
THIS.
Also, its rather unfortunate that article is on fox news...
-
was just about to post this. Yea... sad news indeed. this is getting out of hand.
-
I thought SOPA and PIPA were going to give them these powers?
Sort of. SOPA and PIPA were going to make it a criminal act to do so at all, and would allow immediate, due process-free shutdown of any offending sites. The old "guilty until proven innocent". This is an FBI operation related to continued piracy, with actions taken now that they have enough public interest/evidence to file criminal charges. While it's still bullshit, it's at least done the right way.
-

Blame google.

Megaupload AND megavideo.
I cried a little TBH.
In other happy news
RESIDENT EVIL 6 ANNOUNCED
-
I have to say... even if not active at all (but I keep reading what's going on in here, I swear!), I was at just one step from posting about this as a news on the homepage. But precisely because I'm no more an active member, I thought it was better not to and let current staff to decide if they want to do anything similar.
To me, doing this takedown the day after the"black day" against SOPA and PIPA is just so stupid...
Anonymous is already acting heavily, following them on twitter they're taking down site after site (from various .gov ones to major's).
We're talking about the 13th most visited site of the Internet, generating 5% of it's entire traffic.
World is world, not a US colony. I'm afraid FBI is trying to hit too high this time.
-
Yeah anonymous is really trying to cover this, but really, more people need to be aware of what's going on. Sadly most people I know don't give.
-
I think they will. Tomorrow it will be a hot news in many many many places where now is still night time.
Anonymous started, other may follow:

It will be interesting to see how this will evolve
-
The internet will be... interesting when SOPA passes (I have little doubt it will). Control the internet for great justice, komradie!
As far as megaupload, yeah it's bullshit. But the FBI had been investigating for close to two years.
-
It may have been slightly before your times, but the same thing happened to Napster back in the late 90s. It was declared largely a platform of sharing illegal material and sued. It managed to linger on for a few more years under heavy law persecution before fading away for good.
So this is nothing particularly new and has nothing to do with SOPA/PIPA.
Frustrating, but the internet adapts.
-
Agree.
Curious how they seem to never learn: the takedown of napster was the first step to what we see now.
Even assuming they'll be able to completely destroy Megaupload&co (and without using SOPA/PIPA at all), what may we expect next?
This is just a small news in the big design, but the world is slowly (slowly?) changing and it's just fun to see how some are trying to deny this.
Yeah, most of all, I'm curious now.

RESIDENT EVIL 6 ANNOUNCED
Have you seen the trailer? It's complete ****. Seriously. It's the worst thing I've ever seen. The demo for the 3DS RE game, on the other hand, is fantastic. It's like a middle ground between old RE and RE4. It's like sex.
-
The individuals in the criminal enterprise each faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on racketeering charges, five years for conspiracy to commit copyright infringement, 20 years on money laundering charges and five years on related charges.
Here's what chaps my hide. People have gotten lighter sentences for rape and murder.
And don't get me started on how American law somehow affects non-Americans.
-
Yeah, crimes which affect money are punished more severely than crimes which affect lives. That's how great the World is!
-

The 3DS one is on an isolated Ship. I am highly anticipating this. No doubt. I've had it reserved since 5 months ago. Finally some good old school RE. But we heard little about what the enemies are, other than a new T-Type Abyss Virus.
6th is in an isolated part of Washington, in China where apparently a Biohazard infection is beginning to spread, and in another unknown location, all which seem to have an outbreak resembling the original T and G Viruses, and a "Ganados" sort of parasite. Major complaints have been: Being able to sprint, slide and shoot, and actually fighting some non-zombie humans. I don't know, unless I am flying on a jetpack shooting down aliens with a laser gun, I don't think those are reasons to crap the game so early. They're adding some old school survival, and giving more action. Yes they made the trailer with lame ol' Hollywood action, but they have regular T-Type zombies back. I see this as a step forward.
On topic: Sadly the world runs on money. But this, we all know.
-
Cover system in a Resident Evil game. The main reason for that trailer being ****ing retarded.
-
Oh God. Then you guys need to see the new RE movie trailer.
-
The RE movies have been consistently retarded for a while now, I wouldn't be surprised by any shittiness.
-
That is not where I want my RE to be headed.
-
You should watch the trailer though lol I LOL'd big time.
-
Did you guys see the animated resident evil movie? Degeneration or what it was called? Liked it much better than those live ones, even if the amount of zombies were a bit low.
-
Those are canonical. And are excellent. There's a new one of those coming out again sometime soon.
-
Here's what chaps my hide. People have gotten lighter sentences for rape and murder.

Exactly. Sentencing is so out of balance, it hardly makes sense. Where do they come up with these numbers? And how can Switzerland have less percentage of incarceration, less chance of re-incarceration, much lighter sentencing that usually results in rehabilitation not jail time and both Republicans and Democrats refuse to recognize these FACTS in any shape or form.gfdgh dsgkjadnhfkgber bg
I'm so sick of politics, makes my brain hurt.
-
Megaupload, huh? I know I few people who'll be upset.
The internet is the only cost effective way of being creative and sharing it. If it starts getting controlled and monitored and policed we'll all be flung back several years...
-
**** you and your reasonable thinking, I'm going to panic!
-
I need my Internet! Screw real life, screw outside!
-
screw outside!
Yeah, sounds a bit French to me...
-
Surprisingly, among my circle of real life friends (and probably online ones), where I'm one of the nerdiest dudes, I'm the least worried.
Either way, it's no big deal. Either nothing happens and life doesn't change, or the internet starts sucking and I'll go find a life outside of it (which, let's admit, isn't gonna happen while I still have access to the internet and all these cool sites). People spent most of modern history just fine without the internet. We've only *really* had it for what, 10, 15 years? It can't be *that* hard to live without it.
Let's take cars away too, you don't need them, people were fine moving around with horses. Hell, electricity can go in the drain, why have electricity? People lived for millennia without. Let's kill hospitals as well, one doctor a town will do, just like the olden days. Let's also reinstate slavery, black people were fine enough as slaves, they were so for hundreds of years.
Your argument is retarded.
-
Strawman fallacy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strawman_fallacy).
No no no, it's not stuff. I'm giving items that are part of an evolving race. Internet has become a dependency of the human race, without proper internet our species will decline. You think you'll do fine, but you won't.
-
No, Lucas is right, and I love it when someone points out argument fallacies instead of taking the bait.
-
Seems like a fun thing to do?
The temperature isn't ideal right now, though.
-
It is for him.
-
Modern history as it is now, would terribly be affected, without the internet, if it were to be gone. But Lucas is talking "without" as per personal choice, and based if there were to be restrictions. I mean "without" as a definite. Which is how I would've read his audacious last three sentences if he didn't have 12k posts on this forum.
-
I'm just waiting for God to drop a EMP just for the heck of it and then grab a bowl of divine popcorn to watch us freak out about stuff like facebook, twitter, youtube, porn, piracy and wikpedia. No more "how to..." sites, nowhere to get information for your school assignment. Every digital archive blown into digital fragmental bits, there would be riots man, riots.
-
Getting over the fact that of all people dren quoted fox news, this does suck.
How will I ever get my porn?
-
Or be more clever and... ... nevermind.
-
That's why I've been stockpiling the stuff for years.
-
I used Megaupload every day. :*(
What's worse is that this is causing other file hosting websites such as Filesonic to panic, and remove both functionality and copyrighted files.
http://anonyupload.com/ might be a site to keep an eye on though, it claims that it's out of the reach of the American government. Although now it just wants donations, it could be the start of something good.
-
Even if they can't touch the site itself they can block it from the ISP side.
-
Other countries will follow suit. Plus if a website is hoted in the US (a lot are) it could get shut down.
-
It took me 5 more minutes than usual to find a tv program on saturday. A lot of sites are scared stiff.
-
No, Lucas is right, and I love it when someone points out argument fallacies instead of taking the bait.
Like Lucas's "if we can adapt, it's not a problem" fallacy?
Or that fact his "strawman fallacy" claim wasn't a strawman fallacy at all? Drace didn't create an argument and said Lucas argued it, he rather extrapolated an existing point of view of Lucas.
If anything, it's an appeal to ridicule (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AppealToRidicule)
If you're going to dismiss things as logical fallacies, at least make sure they are the correct logical fallacies.
-
Ok, you've got me there. Late nights mean no fact-checking. Still, I like that he's catching an argument flaw.
-
So we are all mostly aspiring lawyers?
-
So we are all mostly aspiring lawyers?
No.
Just playing a lot of Phoenix Wright.
Years getting involved into interenet discussions also do that.
-
Yeah... I guess.
