Title: Summerjob
Post by: Prpl_Mage on June 14, 2012, 04:40:23 PM
Is this a thing where ya live? Students getting work for the summer to gain some cash.

Might've already mention that school of all kind is free (and you get some cash each month) over here so that we don't have to get in debt for trying to get an education. Anyway, summer is here and that's when more or less everyone wants to work and gain some actual cash and buy something nice (actually most people seem to save money to travel to an actually warm place over the summer).

Me, I'm spending 8 hours in an archive archiving stuff that needs archiving. Not seeing a lot of sun (not that we have much anyway). The pay is pretty good and the job is monotonous and demands little to no concentration.

So what are you doing this summer or are you all corporate sellouts these days working all year long?

Corporate sellout, reporting in.

I only got summer jobs 3 times during my highschool - college career. I was much more about taking a few months off to remember why I was bothering with all the stress of the rest of the year.

My summer job turned full time, which explains (partially) why I'm never here anymore.  I spend about 10 hours a day listening to people complain that we do not have sugar-free slurpees.  It's a slurpee.  That's flavored syrup and water that is frozen slightly.  If you don't want sugar, you're looking for ice.  That's on a different machine.  That and the constant fear of getting shot.  Apu.

And now to disappear to the abyss of the internet for several months.

I'm a pharmacy intern at meijer for the summer. 40 hour weeks dealing with biopolar customers and 90 year old people taking 10 drugs that all interact with each other.
I get calls asking if it is ok to take Vicodin with diet coke, then have the same person call 30 seconds later asking if it is ok to take it with coke because she didn't want to get diet. I get calls about how to treat a 3rd degree burn that a guy got from his crack pipe. I get calls asking which bath salt I recommend. I get to teach people how to use suppositories, and how to give them to their dogs. I get to educate misinformed women that contraceptive jelly doesn't go on toast. I also get to tell them  why their vaginal secretions are discolored, and how smuckers has no spermicidal active ingredients.
The job kinda sucks, but it pays well and is very unpredictable, so I like it.

I now have a monster craving for some toast and jelly.

*Cries at the fact that he's a government sellout who works all year round. Do to perfect timing however, I actually get a summer vacation. Yay! Even if it's only a month...

I'm not in college, but my little brother is. Yes, summer jobs are extremely big where I'm from. He's working in a Shop N' Save if you've heard of those.

I never had an actual summer job, but I remember volunteering for stuff as a high school kid. Mostly cleaning up neighborhoods and rebuilding houses.

A'ight I'm about to drop this **** on y'all.

Picture a big-*** circle. Or a big ***-circle if it helps with the visualisin'.
Now at the top of this thang, right on the top of dat circle line draw a big-*** dot, or again a big ***-dot. Now we gon' label this dot "experience".
Now on the FLIPside of this circle, right down they at the bottom y'all, we gon' draw another B.A.D. Word. Now this one we gon' label "job".
Let's rein this **** IN. Let's take the left side of the original circle. Near the top of dis side, we gon' draw a small threeangle pointing upways. Combined with the original circle, it sorta looks like an a-row. We gon' label dis arrow "is required to get". Now similarly-like on dat other side, we gon' draw anotha small threeangle, but dis brutha's gonna be pointin DOWNways. Now also label dis bro "is required to get".
A'ight, y'all ready to finish dis ****? Ye, ye we is. K, so in the middle of the whole thang, right in the centerline of that they circle, tappatappatappa sumdat keybo'd and write "Razor". Aww ye-aaa, now you have where I have been stuck for months.

tl;dr can't get a job
Of course, it's Winter here, not Summer. But it is Summer there, so I think it still technically would count as a Summerjob. But I can't get either ever.

You have a way of explaining things that makes it all seem so clear, Razor.

God, that was a confusing clusterfuck of words. After a few reads, I completely agree. No job experience means no job, no job means no job experience, and since there's no way to break into the loop, welcome to Fuckedville.

Connections is the cure.
Ask some people you know if there is something you can do at where they work. Let them ask their boss and they'll hook you up with something you can put on your resume. Let that same connection person be on your resume as a contact and that oen person can say that you sure work hard and is always on time and that kind of crap.

Connections are usually where people start and get a career.

Yeah, the key is to realize that your first, second, and possibly third jobs, you're going to stay there maybe a year, two tops. They're just for the resume. Get involved in odd things that look good later and have a strong sense of when to move on.

It was hell on ice getting my first and second jobs, but last time I went job hunting, it was me turning people down while I looked for the best offer. And I found a pretty darn good one where I hope I can stay for a nice long while.
