So I was pretty sure this was gonna be a huge fail from sony's part making a super smash clone and all. But it seems like they called in a few favours and got some studios to borrow their characters.
Visited their site (http://www.playstationallstarsbattleroyale.com/) and found some new additions. Cruised the net afterwards and found some more.
Now the game also have heihachi , jakk & dexter, ratchet & clank, (new) dante and some others I frankly don't know. Complete with a gamplay video and all. We'll see how this project turns out for our good friends at sony. If it's gonna be worth getting and such.
Some questions remain though.
Will the new super smash still be better?
Will snake be in two fighting games on opposite corporate sides?
Will Squareenix let them get cloud and/or sephiroth?
Where is crash bandicoot?
Will LBP Sackboy be a kirby copy if it's in?
What other characters could they possibly add now?
-
Number of links and pokemon is fine by me
Capcom is working on it, we could possibly see Megaman.
The new SSB that is.
As for Playstation All Stars
It seems like it'll be fun. Jax and Daxter and Dante sound like they woul be awesome.
-
If they are smart they will put Sora in.
-
Wow, shows you how out of touch I am with the video gaming community these days. I wasn't even aware that another Smash Bros. was in the works, let alone a Playstation equivalent.
Sony will probably do a pretty good job with it, but I imagine that my enjoyment of it might be hindered by the fact that it's an obvious attempt to compete with Smash Bros. and the trailer indicates that the gameplay is pretty similar. Unless it differs significantly from Smash, I'll probably be giving it a skip.
I do love me some Sly Cooper, though...kudos to Sony for putting him in.
-
I'm not really paying attention. The name is awful, and I suspect that the roster will be full of characters from games I don't much care for. I have concerns about the gameplay, but I don't really care enough to form a solid opinion.
I guess what I'm saying is that a big part of Smash Bros.' appeal is that it has a charm all its own, and I doubt that this game will have any kind of character. A soulless clone.
-
As much as I hate to say this Sony is being smart. They're going the extra mile here getting all sorts of characters.
Nintendo needs to step it up. I want to see Megaman and Chrono dammit.
-
I just wonder what the hell Fat Princess is going to do in the game. Seems like an odd choice.
-
Smash Trophy!
Oh wait...
-
What in the flying **** is a Big Daddy doing there?
They are aware that Bioshock isn't really notably on the PS3, right?
ed: Looking at the gameplay vids...yeah, it's Super Smash Bros. PS3.
eh
-
Will the new super smash still be better?
Depends on who you ask and what their idea of "better" is. I for example play on stages like Big Blue with all items on and don't bitch about tripping, hitboxes, or otherwise "lame" game mechanics. :P

Project M and various modding related shenanigans will sate that. Being able to play as Charizard without being tied down with Squirtle and Venasuar, I rest my cast. XD

Oh holy crap, that video is hilarious. Probably something of that nature is the sad thing. Expect fat jokes aplenty.

No. It won't.
-
I imagine it'll be better than complaining about what other things around going to make the competitive players poop in anger. XD
-
Can't tell of Lucas is trolling or being serious. In any event, I support modding a game so that you like it more. Obviously this screws your ability to play competitively, but that's a tiny 1% of the people anyway.
-
Except Project M is a community based mod. :P
-
I will have to disagree with that. Sometimes developers are too detached from the competative players, meaning they will only tweak that which they themselves think is an issue. Also, sometimes gamers just need an immediate fix.
EDIT: I was obviously replying to Lucas, but someone posted quicker.
-
I am concerned about the game, but I really do not care enough to form a solid opinion.
-
Here's what I feel from what I've seen. Because I know you all care about my opinion oh-so-much.
Smash Brothers created the winning formula for this genre of game. That is a simple fact. You can tweak it, add, or subtract whatever you feel, but the simple fact remains that this formula is already perfected. Rather than just create a "clone" that people can defend isn't a clone through the they changed enough content method or the even more comical derailing the conversation and citing the many instances Nintendo has stolen ideas, they should have just directly cloned the **** out of the game and had exactly Smash Brothers but with Sony characters. I would have been on board. The idea to rack up your power gauge to unleash super attacks to defeat enemies just doesn't seem as much fun to me as racking up the percentage to make them easier to knock off. Speaking of knocking off, the whole idea that there is a floor and you can't spike anyone down for a kill absolutely upsets me. In conclusion, the overall mechanics for how the game plays just screams "I want to be my own Smash Brothers!" but falls short of being entertaining.
Now let's look at the character selection. Sony simply lacks again. Everyone is sick of Mario, Link, *insert another frequently noted Nintendo rep*, but they sure as hell appeal a lot more than most of what Sony offers. Now don't get me wrong, I loved Uncharted to death. But playing as Nathan Drake in this game does not strike me as appealing in the same way. This may be due to the fact that he may be the only character announced thus far that appeals to me. There are a few other staples who are getting recognition that I appreciate, Spike (Ape Escape), Sir Daniel Fortesque (MediEval), and the stage with a Patapon cameo tickles me (Would be thrilled if they gain their own playable slot), but still I am not getting the same appeal. The current roster does not really stand out to me. If they can start tapping in to the vein of Crash Bandicoot or Spyro that would be wonderful. I would be even satisfied if Square would throw in a couple reps like Aya Brea (Parasite Eve) or allow Sora to debut in a fighting style game (I'm in a Kingdom Hearts phase so shove it.)
All in all, this game looks like it has potential, and I do not care that it is a Smash Bros. rip. In fact, I think they should have just stolen their entire formula, but I understand that is frowned upon. However, given what I see from the gameplay and current roster, this looks to me like a wait 6 months and buy on eBay for $10 title.

Actually it's widely disputed that Smash ripped off Power Stone in the first place. So... circle of life. /nerdism

By winning formula, I implied what many unanimously agree to be the best, not the original. In addition to this, while there are many similarities, I maintain them to be very different games due to the 3 Dimensional space in Power Stone compared to the (what I refer to) platform fighter that is Smash. It's like saying Super Mario 3 is the same platformer as Mario 64. They are both platformers with very similar attributes, but the additional dimension creates a large enough difference that it is it's own brand of Platformer.
I however understand and can see the similarities of Power Stone and Smash, and I would actually like to see how Smash would hold in that similar style.
-
Trope Maker and Trope Codifier are two very different things.
In response to Greenraven.
And yeah...Sony lacks the "star power" to pull this off.
****ing everybody knows who Mario and Link are, and the prospect of seeing them fight is a little more exciting than saying "Who would win in a fight, Cole MacGrath or Fat Princess?"
Also, yeah, the gameplay looks like it completely lacks depth.
If you're going to rip off smash bros, at least add something new to the table.
-
Actually, there was another game far before Power Stone that was much more similar to Smash Bros., and I'm almost certain that the devs said it was a big influence. I only wish I could remember what it was called. It was a two-player arcade fighter with MASSIVE levels, and was very similar in a lot of ways to Smash Bros.

Dream Mix TV World Fighters.
Now that I think about it, yeah, it's a much better match than Power Stone. So yeah, point is Smash didn't do anything new. It simply got lucky.
It's like with the Dreamcast, hellava system waaaaaaaaaay ahead of it's time (Playstation 1 and Gamecube were crap compared to it). But bad timing destroyed it. RIP, lil buddy, RIP. T_T
edit:
No wait, it can't be Dream Mix. Not early enough to account for Smash 64. Nevermind. :\
-
No, that's not the game I was thinking of, but it brings up a good point.
I'm not planning on telling anyone that point. You're a bunch of smart cookies, so you'll figure it out.
-
So yeah. Kick and stuff.
They added sackboy for LBP. He's not gonna be a kirby clone. Just another fighter, using stickers and stuff. Just looks a bit weird watching him do fighting.
Oddest addition. Evil Cole mcgarth from infamous. Never played the game but "good" cole mcgarth is in the game. They aren't even separate people are they? Doubt a lot of fans thought "Hey, I wonder what it would be like if good cole faught evil cole!"
-
Technically they are the same person (duh), but they have different powers.
That's the entire gimmick of the series :V
-
Never played the game but "good" cole mcgarth is in the game. They aren't even separate people are they?
It's one guy. Depending on how you play the game you become either good or evil. It's like the Hulk or Jekyll & Hyde. XD
-
Good Cole (small spoilers) can get Ice powers, and Evil Cole can get...weird tar-like fire powers.
Also Good Cole = precision + speed, Evil Cole = EXPLOSIONS BAM POW WOOH
-
Both Coles can surf trains though! :D
-
So it's kinda like if nintendo added Mario with one of his power up hats? Like fire mario, metal mario, raccoon mario, pinguin mario ect ect.
-
Not really. It's more like Dante's Inferno. You start out neutral and then as you do good deeds or bad deeds you become one or the other. You don't just become good or evil on a whim, it takes time to build up to it. Kinda like karma in Fallout.
-
Oh, that. XD
-
But he didn't mean in the game, he meanton the crossover game, adding mario with a power up as opposed to just the regular mario.
Yeah exactly.
Kinda like adding goron tunic link with biggoronsword in the next ssb because he's different from ordinary link. If you want to take that path.
-
Oh, my bad. XD
-
Does anyone even play as Zelda? Like most people I just R1 and start off as Sheik. XD
-
Natako plays as Zelda and she's actually pretty good, in my opinion.
-
Does anyone even play as Zelda? Like most people I just R1 and start off as Sheik. XD
Zelda is a lot better in Brawl than melee. Shiek was a transgender god in melee with speed and all but is more balanced in brawl.
Also lightning heels on zelda's air moves. Hurt like hell.
-
I rarely play anymore, let alone online. Besides all the hardcore purists play Melee, there is no online. XD
-
As Cerb said, I'm actually pretty decent with Zelda - better than Sheik, to be honest, but I don't play online. All of her smashes are pretty decent, actually, and she can pull off some pretty decent attacks without much charging. Nayru's love is a decent knockback when you have a lot of people around you too...well, more of a knockDOWN, but same thing, really.
-
Regarding Cole = Mario Powerups, I think it'll be more like the various re-skins.
Like Ganon/Falcon.
But with different moves.
I guess.
-
Yeah so for those who can't be arsed to check this game up regularly.
Characters in the game:
Raiden - metal gear solid (4)
Nariko - heavenly sword
Sir Daniel Fortesque - MediEvil
Heihachi - tekken
Kratos - God of war
Far princess - fat princess
Cole McGarth - infamous
Evil Cole McGarth - infamous
Colonel Radec - Killzone (instead of generic soldier)
Nathan Drake - Uncharted
Big Daddy - Bioshock
Sweet tooth - twisted metal
Dante - devil may cry 6
Jack and Daxter - Jack and Daxter
Rathet and Clank - Ratchet and Clank
Sly Cooper - Sly fox
Sackboy - LBP
Spike- ape escape
Toto - something
Parapa the rapper - Parapa the rapper

Kickin' da thread.
So yeah, this game has been released and all. Did anyone get it?
I played it some bit during my stay in Toronto and it seemed like a good game but not as good as brawl (Yes, I'll compare it to brawl).
My main issue with this game is how you get points.
"You get points by killing your opponents right?"
Why yes, yes you do...
"Then what's the problem?"
The problem is that you can only kill your opponents with your special moves - and by special moves I really mean special moves. There is this R2 button that's used as a special attack button and the special attack is only available when the special bar is filled up. You fill it up by dealing damage to opponents. So it's kinda like a limit break. Let the bar fill up another time when it's on lvl1 and you get lvl2, let it fill up a third time and you're at lvl3.
The moment you get into the hitbox of one of these special moves - you die. Easy as pie. Hit someone with a special attack to kill them. So it's kinda like brawl but you get your final smash by dealing damage to other players. And all final smashes are 1-hit KO (not like Peach or Ice climbers). It's just that there is no Hp or damage stat or anything. You just do attacks to increase your special bar. it's not about dealing damage or something, Dissidia had a simmilar concept only that you racked up damage points with "normal attacks" and then you dealt the accumulated damage with "HP attacks", a system that I personally think works better.
Most of the time the lvl 3 special is kinda lame. Some characters get a cutscene and then everyone on the screen dies. Or you enter some super mode for some time where every attack you land is a kill. It's just that the specials of characters differ so much that it becomes kinda imbalanced, some characters can also freeze or stun you which makes it easier to land these attacks while characters like Dante have to rely on the opponent not moving slightly to the left to avoid it all together.
They are planning on releasing additional characters as DLC. But I have no idea who Kat from Gravity rush is or what the game starhawk is about. Which is kinda the problem with this game, it's trying to introduce new characters and games rather than going on nostalgia as brawl. Sure, naughty dog don't have the rights for crash bandicoot anymore and spyro was sold as well. But y'know, some would've been fun.
The best thing about the game is that when you buy it you can also use it for your PS vita. And the two consoles can play it together. I suppose that's a pretty good thing at least. Don't own a vita myself.
-
It is by no means a bad game. It has interesting mechanics at work that are quite entertaining. However, some 4 years later I am still playing Brawl regularly, and I've already grown bored of the game. This may be due to Persona 4 however.
It is impossible not to compare this game to Brawl, as this is essentially Sony's Smash Brothers, and that is quite the title to match yourself up to.
But I have no idea who Kat from Gravity rush is or what the game starhawk is about.

A worthwhile game to own if you have a Vita. There current lineup is quite sparse and this little gem almost makes the system worthwhile. Next to Persona of course.
