Many people have a favorite character or two... it might be kirby because of its cuteness, link because he is in so many good games, etc... What is your favorite, and why?
Off the top of my head (I didn't give this much thought), I really love Locke Cole. Kind of your Robin Hood character, he combines his passion with his desire to help people. An exemplar example of the tried and true hero who saves the world purely because he wants to help people. Locke also has an interesting back story, and feels "the main character" of the game 3rd longest IMO (1st being Terra and 2nd being Celes).
My other favorite, and this is kind of hard to describe, is Main Character from persona 3. Yeah, he has no lines and no personality, but that is because you make those lines and personal traits. His versatility, appearance, etc. are all great. Going through social links and getting to know the characters better is actually enjoyable too, since the actions taken are relate-able and getting power ups during character development is just swell. Lastly, the actions taken by the main character at the end of the game are some of the most memorable actions I've seen in a game. I know a lot of people share my opinion in this too, seeing as an ENTIRE GAME was made just to show what happened to Main Character after he did what he did.

I liked Locke a lot more before they got too far into explaining the Rachel motivation. That storyline oddly completely lacked a love story and made only vague references to Locke / Celes being a possibility, but the Rachel thing kind of cast a shadow over it. Before her brief Phoenix rebirth, it seemed like Locke's heart was forever going to be hunting for a way to save Rachel, and after that it seemed like he was merely settling for Celes cuz she was there.
Pity, that.
I've always been a fan of Schala, because that part of Crono Trigger is amazing, her theme is amazing, and that was the SINGLE loose end. When it was revealed that Cross was an elaborate answer to what happened to Schala, I was pretty excited, but I admit this happiness would be about tenfold better if the Schala character in Cross beared even a passing resemblence, both physically and personality-wise, to the girl from Trigger.
Rydia is admirable purely because of being such a trooper at such a young age. Especially because she had every justification to hate Cecil.
Liked Kratos from ToS. Blended arrogance, strength, wisdom, and handling tough decisions about as well as I've ever seen done.
Rucks from Bastion has the best voice of all time.

OMG LIEK CL0UD IS DE 1337est karaktor efer!
So, Favourite characters huh?
Well then. This is starting to get harder and harder for me. Too many interesting games out there. Likeable characters - many of those. Obnoxious characters - even more of those. Are we doing a thread for that one as well?
So yeah. Let's get the party started. Vivi, it's been some time since I FFIX came out but Vivi is just such a likeable character. Not only is the little fella the only person capable of elemental damage (and able to boost his damage to 9999 with focus while waiting for zidane to steal that last friggin item from bosses) but his development is satisfying to experience.
Poor little guy is just an urchin dragged into a big conflict and later starts to question his existence upon facing the black mage army and the black waltz. Same thing ignites later upon arrival in the black mage village when he finds other black mages that aren't just artificial.
Goes through the game being a kind person and reliable character, cares about others but insecure about himself. Yet not a mopping emo like modern characters tend to be. Just a child really, raised by a Qu (wierd race that deserves fire) who dies shortly before the games start. He don't know much about the world or his own origins. But he hangs in there, fighting for his new friends and the world. Such a champ. Hate his voice in KH2 though.
Maya, Septerra core. One great game that was something different than the typical FF ATB system. Maya is the lead character of the game and such a simple thing such as the game having voice overs and (crappy) facial animations when talking to NPCs and events alike made her and the others seem more alive.
She starts out as a bit of a rogue opposing the system and holding family closer than authorities and such crap. Gets dragged into the bigger conflict and meets up with new people and characters, evolves as a person but follows the typical RPG mentality of the lead - help people, self-sacrifice and all that. It also helps that's she's a useful character in the game with a wide arsenal of skills.

Hate that guy. Personal reason.
Hard to tell, really... but I'll go with the first that popped into my mind: Frog (Glenn) from Chrono Trigger.
A bit too lazy to write why, but... I'm pretty sure you guys all know anyway.
Also really liked Freya from FFIX. Because.
Probably others I can't think about, too...

Very... Informative?
You can do better than that lad.

Fine. I like the character's appearance (always liked anthropomorphic animals... in case you didn't notice from the Cerebus character (and no, I'm NOT a furry)).
Their stories are pretty interesting (the drama and all that).
I like their play style and all. Freya kicks arses and Frog... well, I'm not as fond of his abilities as I am of Freya's, but he's still pretty kick-arse with someone else (ex: Dual tech with Chrono). Also, his healing spells are pretty useful.
So yeah, that should be a little better. I fail at explaining, yeah...
-
Batman. From any game starring Batman.
Because he's the goddamn Batman.
-
Hate that guy. Personal reason.
The reason he hates Kratos is because I think he's a sexy beast. Seriously, Cam Clarke's voice makes me melt into a puddle of goo.
Personality-wise, I like Kratos for about the same reasons as Sai. I don't know if I'd call him my favorite character, though...That's a tough call.
I'm a big fan of Beatrix from FF9. I feel that she's one of the few instances in which Square managed to create a kickass female character without draining her of her femininity, so props to them. (Lightning, on the other hand, was a different story that I don't care to talk about...)
I also like Frog/Glenn from Chrono Trigger a lot. There's just something so awesome about a frog with a cape swinging the Masamune around, plus he has an awesome theme. Never left the party once he joined...well, except when he had to. I have to admit as well that, simplistic as his backstory with Cyrus is, it still drew me in and attached me to the character.
I'm having a hard time coming up with any others that I really like right now. There are plenty that I "like", but not many that I would really call favorites.
-
Link is an obvious one because it's Link.
Anyways, I'm going to say Ike from Fire Emblem. Why? Because he's not racist towards the Laguz and can take on Caineghis (Idk if that's spelled right). Plus on the lone island extra quest, I sent him out on his own and he just smacked everyone that tried to touch him.

There are simply WAAAAY too many characters to pick out one in the crowd for me. So I'll just go with the most recent one from the latest game that I just played.
Guardian Teotl from Majin and The Forkasen Kingdom. He can tear down a building with a single swipe of his hand, but he's just so damn adorable! He's like a big cuddly city destroying puppy! <3
Also I hate Kratos, MasterChief, Marcus Pheenix, and all the rest simply because I like being an ironic hipster. Everyone knows that MasterChief is just a DoomGuy wannabe. :P
-
In a more serious response, I love the flying **** out of Duke Nukem. He's 100% 80s/90s action camp, and his non-stop humor and crude attitude (some would say 'tude) make him undeniably awesome.
And I'm going on record as being one of those weirdos that enjoyed DNF.
-
Boringly, probably an FF character... Tifa or Beatrix or someone like that. Though I might be voting with my penis...
An old favourite was Ronin from Mech commander. He was a pilot who you got at quite a low level and was never really meant to amount to anything but I always made him get as much experience as possible. Siren, too. I loved the underdogs. Not that any of you played that game...

Nephenee!

Nephenee!
If you're talking about the girl from FE, then yeah... She's a beast and doesn't get hit lol

Here's an odd one: Ratchet.
He is by far the best example of character growth throughout a series that I can think of at a glance.
In the first game, he was kind of a spoiled brat of a teenager, who constantly bitched about...everything.
Second game, he starts to grow up a little, although he's still a little hotheaded about stupid things.
The third game is where he starts to definitively become a hero, after returning to his home to save it from invading forces.
Then, in the Future trilogy, he goes full on hero, putting his own desires behind him (seeing the family he never knew) against saving the entire universe.
I'm glancing over Deadlocked because it's not quite a R&C game.
Same with All 4 One, which simply isn't that good.

Ah Fire emblem. Good times, I just remember getting Brom to be a marshal in radiant dawn and him simply standing somewhere could take care of many attacking forces. Such a solid class those marshals. '
Also beatrix but that's probably penis like Moose. She's a great character and all. But it's more or less her looks, the battles against her and the fact that she switches sides but DON'T become a party member that I like. Also the scene with the red rose when entering memoria.
Ganondorf. 100 times better than link. He usually comes with a backstory and personality(although narrow-minded). Top that with an army of evil monsters and dark magic to do his bidding.
Braig/ Xigbar, sneaky bastard from KH. The boss battle in KH2 was a blast and his role in 358days hinted that he was more than just a member, his return in BBS as Braig further explained his role in creating organization XIII (being one of the first members) and he was given some more depth. Just thought it odd that Terra was the one giving him the scar and not Ventus. Don't get why'd he hold a grudge otherwise. Have yet to concluded the story in DDD but I feel that he got a role to play no doubt.

Mr. Stubbs the Zombie :bend:
-
I think pretty much every character personality designed by Valve is brilliant and has a huge back story and lots of interesting concepts.
Apart from that, probably Laharl from Disgaea, Auron from FFX, Shank from Shank, and Mario has to be up there just because he's so happy all the time.
-
Well if we're talking about story writing and not just the characters, I'd have to give props to Baten Kaitos. One hell of a plot twist!
The game rapes you the player playing the game and not the character IN the game.
And long that same vein, Contact with it's fourth wall interactions. The ending, priceless.
Also as long as I'm on the subject of the fourth wall... Psycho Mantis from MGS1 reading your savefiles! Holy crap that blew my mind at the time! :O

- Guybrush Threepwood. The guy just works. He is the perfect straight man to the strange stuff that happens in the Monkey Island games. I enjoy doing weird things just to see how he reacts.
I must make a vertex hack of him over Marth someday.
-
That's a great pick.

Ah the curse of monkey island. Such a great game that was. Guybrush and Murrey on their grand adventure. So many good scenes and quotes in that one. Nothing beats a lactose intolerant volcano god.
-
You fight like a dairy farmer!
-
Curse of Monkey Island is good and all, but I have a special place in my heart for Quest For Glory, King's Quest and Space Quest. The comedy games of Sierra's golden years have yet to be matched in my opinion.
-
Since you said "Video Game" I'd say Solid Snake. Cause he beats Chuck Norris.
Had you said best RPG Character, I'd say...I guess Fei, from Xenogears. Deep, complex, kind of a wuss. Pretty awesome. Also, best storyline ever.
-
My favorite video game character has got to be Michael jackson. Simply because in Mugen he just shoot stars at you doing incredible damage. Go ahead and say Michael Jackson is not a video game character.

Michael Jackson had his own game before mügen. But he's a real person, not created for a game. Or was. He's dead.
-
Ignore him, all he does nowadays is post really stupid things.
He's almost like a perpetual youtube comment, but with less racism.
-
MOONWALKER WAS THE BEST GAME EVER. I LOVE HOW MICHAEL SAVED ALL THE CHILDREN WITH A GIANT MONKEY ROBOT.
-
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS ME AND PLAYED MOONWALKER!! I knew some person on here would assume I was trolling. Thank god this is the internet and I have noting to prove. ::)
