Don't tell me I'm the only one on Charas playing it?
-
Well, thanks to my Windows being in French, it seems like I can't see anything regarding the North American version of the game because it leads me to the French page. You know, the Europe French.
And there isn't even any language/region option, or at least I sure can't find it. Stupid that this forces me to look at the French page. Guess they want us all Frenchies to be out of their American servers.
Didn't know this was out, though. French page says August 28th, but I'm assuming that's only for Europe or something, then.
Edit: Oh wait, just saw that you could play 3 days before if you pre-ordered it. Still, not going to bother with the French page. I'm not from Europe.
Until they care about me, I won't care about them. And they probably don't care anyway. Dammit!

I HAVE NO MONEY FOR AWESOME THINGS
Also my computer sucks.
This whole "jobless" thing kind of blows.
-
I'm not big on MMOs, so I don't care.
-
People here have a phobia of MMOs. I thought you knew this.
-
Not sure how I feel about the game yet, only seen um... cinematic battles and such so far. Not so much of the actual game play.
Might be good. Don't yet know. My money is on Borderlands 2 though.
And yes, not released in EU yet.
-
My money's definitely on Borderlands 2 being the thing I'm going to play until the ends of time.
Or until I get epic level, which ever comes first.
Also, Torchlight 2.
Also also, I really do seriously want to play this, but there's those little barriers I mentioned before.
-
I HAVE NO MONEY FOR AWESOME THINGS
Ditto. :|
Also, Torchlight 2.
Torchlight is just a poor man's Diablo. XD
If someone wants to give me a free copy of Guild Wars, sure, I'll play it.
-
I see it more like "Diablo is a more expensive Hack and Slash on which you can spend real money for in-game advantages despite the fact that the game costs $60+ already".
As for the language thing, guess I could try to set things up... but to be honest, I don't really care. I won't screw up all of my thing for one game that doesn't even have language/region options on their site.
-
Torchlight is just a poor man's Diablo. XD
We can no longer be friends.

Wait, what? What in-game advantages? I've been playing the game forever and I haven't spent a dime. I haven't even SEEN any credit card slots. O_O
On the subject of Diablo however, **** DRM! At it's core it's a single-player experience, ****ing greedy fuckmongers.
We can no longer be friends.

The in-game auction house where you can spend real money for rare items. I mean, sure, it's not exactly the same as "We sell gear better than end games one!" but it's still paying for better items. It's lame.
-
Ok, I must be completely stupid or something. I keep hearing about being able to spend real world money in the auction house (you're not the first person to mention that), but I've only ever seen gold transactions. What the hell am I doing wrong? O_O
-
Nothing, you're actually doing everything right. F*ck the real money auction house.
-

Blizzard isn't selling anything and there is nothing you have to spend real money on to get your hands on. Everything drops in the game but if you're a lazy bum and rather burn 100$ on a legendary crossbow that's between you and your wife sonny.
The action house got just as many items and you can buy those for gold. You farm the gold and you can buy items in case you're a lazy bum and for some reason don't want to play the game.
Ok, I must be completely stupid or something. I keep hearing about being able to spend real world money in the auction house (you're not the first person to mention that), but I've only ever seen gold transactions. What the hell am I doing wrong? O_O
In the auction house, top right corner. Click the button to swap between gold and real money auctions. But you'll need a credit card. And only rich people can afford the ridiculous amounts some people expect to get. '
So Razorman, what are the ups and pros of GW2 and what are battles actually like?
-
I don't know, I've heard stories about how stuff at the auction house had reduced chances to drop the more it was found and put there or something. Could be lies, could be the truth, I don't know.
And the thing is Blizzard knows people will pay for stuff in there, and they do receive a cut out of it. It's really lame.
-

I must be blind because I never noticed that. Thanks.

I understand for real money, but why the hell is Blizzard taking a cut of fake money? Seriously, 15% of your gold for every transaction, wtf?!
-
Also, I'm not sure I'd call that being lazy.
You're pretty much paying so you don't have to sit on your arse moving nothing but your hands multiple additional hours for one item.
I'd say it's more being careless with money.
-
Dude, down-talking Torchlight? That ain't right.
It's Diablo, but not. Honestly, I like it a lot more than D3. Torchlight 2 (when I finally get it) should blow my damn socks off.
-
I never said Torchlight is a bad game. Just that when compared to a behemoth like Diablo it isn't as popular. It's like a Need For Speed vs Burnout. Or Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter. They're all awesome games, but some just get more popularity that others.
FYI, I played Torchlight and enjoyed the hell out of it. :P
-
"Poor-man's Diablo" suggests that it's an inferior product for those who can't afford the better game. It's all about picking your words, and you chose wrong.
-
Ok, I know when to put my guns down and walk away. XD
-
I got it. Will be starting tomorrow morning.
i was a moron and didn't know that retail preorder and website preorder were not the same.
-
So Razorman, what are the ups and pros of GW2 and what are battles actually like?
This is my first MMO, so it's hard to say why it's better than the others! But let me see if I can't rattle off some spiel.
Firstly, in comparison to WoW, the price is definitely right: You buy the game and then there are no subscriptions. The game is free, forever. There's a cash shop but SPOILERS: YOU DON'T NEED TO BUY THINGS TO WIN, DIABLO 3. Whoa, where did that come from?
The skills are pretty impressive. There are a lot of weapons, and all 8 classes can use a certain amount of all of them. At the moment I have a ranger who is using a great sword. You can't stop me! But I digress, the skills. Each class (there are 8) has different skills with each weapon. That's a crazy amount of skills!
In addition, each class gets "traits" which are class unique skills that you can unlock later. There are a lot of different trait skills, but you won't be able to use most of them, so you have to be choosey (though you can get skill resets).
The battles are fun. Each weapon has either 2, 3 or 5 skills (2 handed weapons have 5, one handed weapons have 3 and off handed weapons have 2, and some one handed weapons can be used in the offhand, netting an additional different 2 skills) and on your first time equipping a weapon type (long sword, short bow, etc) you will have just one skill. You unlock the rest after a certain amount of kills (5, then 10, then 15, then 20 I think).
The way items and experience works out is cool too. Firstly, if you hit an enemy at least once, you'll be marked as having contributed to their death, so you get experience. The person who gets the finishing blow doesn't get anything over the other people who were attacking it. It's the best part of communism, the equality and the sharing. Like Diablo 3, the loot is unique to each player too. If you contributed to an enemy's death, there's a chance they'll drop items (drop in this case meaning you go to their body and search it. It's not like Diablo in this regard).
What else? Quests. Quests are cool the way there work. Once you're close enough to an event that's running or just started, it'll show up on your map and in the top right corner of your screen. Then you just toddle off, contribute to whatever the quest is and you're set. Depending on your contribution you can get gold, silver or bronze medals. Each medal is just a representative of how much work you did and you get an appropriate amount of experience, gold and renown (a type of currency that can be spent at certain vendors for better items. It's also the currency that guilds use to do guild things, something I do not understand yet.
If you get a bronze or a silver, it's not the end of the world. Quests that give you medals are always replayable. They'll be back eventually.
Something ArenaNet are pleased with is dynamic quest lines. Basically depending on how you end a quest, the next quest in that immediate area or with those NPCs will be based on the outcome. If you fail to defend some watermains, the next quest will be defending some guy repair them. That's cool!
Also, pretty important: there's a leveling system. Each area has its own effective level, which means if you're higher than that level, you'll only be as strong as that level. This means a level 80 can't come out of nowhere and kill everything instantly. It's a pretty cool system.
There's also the personal story thing. When you make your character, you choose a bunch of backstory things that your personal story gets built around. There's a bunch of choices so generally what you'll experience might be different from what anyone else experiences. I should mention that these choices are unique to race.
Speaking of races: there's the stock standard humans, the giant cat demons the Charr (**** yes), the we're-human-but-awesome Nordic themed Norn (also awesome), the gnomish midget race of technologically advanced Asura, and the plant people Sylvari. There's a race of bird people, the Tengu, but they're not playable. Yet? There's also a list of NPC races but I doubt most of them will be playable, but you never know! Expansions!
Lastly, the PVP.
There is solo PVP, which I haven't tried, and there's World Vs World Vs World. This is where a whole mess of people from different servers fight each other to capture points on the map. A separate map from the PVE, of course. The fun thing is that, the more your server is winning in the WVWVW, the more buffs and bonuses you get in PVE! Small things like magic find chance, crit chance, heal rate, less damage taken and such. I haven't played much WVWVW though, but everyone and their items gets scaled up to level 80 for it, and you also get access to ALL THE SKILLS while you're there.
I'm tired because I keep going to bed at 5am because of this game, so I can't remember much else to discuss. I'll take any questions though.
-

To be honest I find most games over-hype and subsequently flop in the "unique story to your character" department. So many games promised so much, and you ended up eating the same generic hamburger of doom.
Also have you seriously never played any other MMO before this? Not even like, Runescape? Or AdventureQuest? O_O
-
The closest I've come to MMOs is Diablo 3, lol
-
I've played WoW (back even before Burning Crusade), RuneScape (when I was around 9 or 10), and a couple random Korean grindfests.
Also a random Atlus title that got axed a week after I decided to start playing again because I had good memories of it (Neosteam)
Also, the first Guild Wars which was a lot of fun.
Still have the disc somewhere, but I forgot our login info.
Also also, Spiral Knights, which is one of the funnest titles I've ever played.
Seriously, it's loads of fun.
-
So, are there any differences except the aesthetics of the races in the game? Like available classes, stats or something?
Also. How does this "skills are tied to the weapon in your hand" works? Do you have a proficiency level or something with that type of weapon that unlocks skills for that "class of weapon" or so each weapon have a varied collection of skills that needs to be unlocked individually?
Is it really free of subscriptions? 'cuz the buy prize ain't exactly high and it sounds a bit too good to be true. Otherwise I might just get it and give it a try, it's released today and all.
-
The races have racial powers that I don't think come in to play at lower levels. For example, and the only example I have, the Norn can turn into werebears/wolves/ravens/snow leopards at level 30.
With the weapons, once you've say used a long sword and unlocked all 5 skills, you have them forever. You have those same 5 skills on all future long swords, regardless of how high a level they are. You could get each type of weapon early on, unlock all the skills and you'll be set for the rest of the game.
No subscriptions. You can buy gems with real money or gold to buy ingame things, mostly cosmetic or things that can increase the amount of experience or renown you get from killing things/doing quests, or keys to the chests you sometimes find (you can also find keys). There is no pay to win going on though, and due to the nature of the game that wouldn't really be an issue anyway.

Alright, sounds good. Would be kinda boring to unlock the same 5 skills every time I swapped a big ****ing axe or something.

Yeah I checked the game in an online store and saw some sort of "Guild wars 2 gem pack." which held like 2000gems or something, but no explanation what it was for. But if them gems can be found in-game. No problamos, farmers my middlename. Purple farmer Mage.
I personally hate it when they sell experience increase and such that gives you an edge over other players. But as you said, it probably won't matter much. Especially with level scaling in regions.
-
I've been playing this for a while.
My social life has just been lost once again.
I made such awesome progress too.
-
But if them gems can be found in-game.
I should point out that they can't be found, so much as there is an ingame stock markety thing where you can buy gems for X gold and vice versa. Theoretically you could play said market and get more gold for your gems you just bought.
-
Is the stock market thingy player controlled?
That tends to make really, really poor economy, if Spiral Knights is anything to go by.
-

Oh well, I'll see how it works then. Just ordered it. Should drop by in a day or two. The cost was pretty low so it's not like I'll regret it if it isn't living up to my expectations.
-
I don't quite understand how the gem market works, but I suspect if lots of people buy gems, the price goes up, and etc.
As for servers, there are two types of servers. We got your God Bless The President North American servers and the Hilariously Inaccurate Stereotype European servers. Australians have to go to the US servers, as do I guess all of Asia, but I haven't encountered much in the way of dudes not speaking english.
In the first week, you can swap servers for free, so you can be with your friends and such. Afterwards it'll cost some gems. But! While I have no idea how to go about it yet, or if it's even implemented, there is/will be a system where you can "guest" on other servers for free, which my understanding is that it'll be exactly the same as playing on your home server, only somewhere else.
-
So I could buy 1 gem for 59 copper. Don't seem too bad.
My firewall is getting me some trouble though. It blocks the connection to the game.
Just getting into the game myself as an elementalist but it's a bit worrying when the first thing that happens is that you're placed in a cue.'
Gotta tweek that firewall and give it another go later tonight
Game is fine and all, nothing totally fancy or something - but it's kinda just another MMORPG. A huge main city with long distances between useful shops, lots of enemies ect.
Kinda like how there are like no real quests so far beside the story mode. You just enter an area and there's this bar and a message pretty much saying "Kill **** and collect ****". You do that and the bar fills up, when full the thing is completed, the "quest giver" opens a shop, you receive some gold and karma(reputation currency) and you get a letter from the person with a thanks and some more money.
Liking the game but wish I had someone to play with beside all them crazy europeans. Some people don't seem to get that I actually don't speak italian.
So far:
pros:
option to dye your gear at pretty much any time you want.
professions don't reset if you learn a new one. I learned huntsman at first then read what it was. And I quickly realised that I didn't need warhorns and bows and whatnot. Got Artificer and tailor instead. Mage weapons and mage armors. Also love that all the armor proficiencies can make bags and runes(not sure what runes does though).
Fast travel, every mmo should have this.
lots of world events.
salvage to get materials from useless gear
individual material spots. Some guy thought he just ninja'd my ore nod, but it was still there for me.
cons:
I've already learnt the 5 skills for Staff, sceptre, focus, dagger and off hand dagger. 5 for all of my 4 elements that is. So 25 skills in total. Hoping that those things you spend points on will be worth it.
Humans. Everyone plays human. Not sure if that's because I'm in some sort of human starting area though. Gotta check that, it would make sense.
Consumable ammounts on farming items like the pickaxe, bushpicker and woodcutter axe. also the salvage items. It's not like monster hunter where there's a chance they'll break. You get like 100 or 50 in one stack and use them up.
trident. I have a trident as a weapon but not sure how to use it.
Bank, I accessed my bank, dropped some items I couldn't use and went back ot get them later. Didn't find a bank though. Later turned out that I accessed it through my proficiency item creator thingy.
Overflow- not exactly sure what it even means but when enter a new area and such I am told that I'm in an overflow server since the original server is full. After some time I get a message that the server got room for me. Travel or stay. Place looks the same, I can do quests, level up and find items. So I have no idea what it means.
-
So you chose a server! This is your home server. There are a lot of people using it.
But then, in some areas, there are too much people! Once it reaches it a cut-off point, people who join that same area will be put into an overflow server.
There are many overflow servers and they're not specific to any one server (as I understand it). You're not penalised for being put into this server, you can do virtually anything you can do in the normal server. There's only a couple of things you can't do, though the only one I can recall is checking the WvWvW stats. Not a big deal. If you're playing with friends and they're in the overflow server and you're not, you can just join them manually. Too easy.
tl;dr overflow servers aren't anything bad
Out of the 8 classes, Elementalists can use the 2nd lowest amount of weapons with 6 (2 main, 1 two hand, 2 off hand and 1 underwater) though it's made up with how you essentially get 4x more skills with each weapon.
As for banks yeah they're usually found in the race towns, though I think you can find them elsewhere too. But it's easier to use the crafting stations since they're a little more common. I don't know why this is a con?
-
Yeah I treid 4 classes, and I stuck with the elementalist. lvl 23 now And gearing up my SP for the elite skills. This game is just too fun.
ANd I think the overflow servers are nice. I get a lot od d/c error on the actual servers.
-
I don't know why this is a con?
Oh just because there was no information whatsoever how to access your bank. Learned that you can just click an item and chose "send to deposit" or something and it's sent to your bank from your inventory. So the banking system is now a pro. Nothing beats not having to throw out items, just send them to the bank right away. Just crafting materials and such though.
-
Okay I'm having a great time with this. Game is well done and challenging enough. Not sure what's there as endgame contents though.
Been trying out the different classes and find it odd that there's only 5 character slots but 8 classes.
Engineers barely have any weapons. There's the gun, off hand gun, off hand shield 2 handed gun and water gun. Pretty good damage but no skills that got me hooked.
Rangers, just weren't for me. Felt like the everyday hunter class with pet and all.
Thief, pretty interesting way to make the steal command. Liking it, fun to play.
Mesmer, didn't charm me any. Some interesting skills but overall kinda boring.
Necromancer were pretty interesting as well, pets to sacrifice and some interesting skills. They also have this overlimit mode where you get some stronger moves.
Warriors, I didn't have much hope for this class, according to MMO law they are more or less forced to attack enemies to gain rage which allows for stronger/any skills. They decided to give warriors rage yes, but when using a skill that uses it the damage/effect is dependent on how much rage you got instead of using rage as a resource for skills. Pretty interesting but overall a kinda stale class. Might get better with levels.
Guardians got buffs you can pop to get an immediate effect. This would be cool and all if it weren't for most utility runes being the exact same thing. Nice supply of damage and defensive skills though.
Still loving the elementalist, using scepter and dagger. Gives some great skills. Some movement with air, some healing with water, some AoE with earth and awesome damage as fire.
Currently at 17 with that one and my only regret is that I didn't remade him so I could name him "Marduk the wise" instead of the improvised Malluk(since marduk was taken), sounds like an ogre.
Leveling professions(artificer and tailor) are surprisingly easy, well if you got the materials. The discovery plane (where you mix items to get recipes) wasn't so hard when you figured it out. As artificer I have 2 components for each type of weapon. Then I make myself a signet thingy that gives a stat bonus. Mix those two items with the signet and we've just created a new item and a free level or such. Repeat the process with every signet for every weapon type until you unlock new items and more signets.
Also took part of this huge event in Queensdale to defeat the shadow behemoth. Problem with this game though. Too many flashy and awesome animations. With that many people at the same place it gets pretty laggy and fps drops and all that. Got some great loot from it though, and it sure was an experience.

Currently level 40. Pimping out my apperance buying high lvl armor and transmuting it. now i need dyes
-

Transmuting gems are pretty cool, just too greedy to use them myself.
And yeah dyes. I keep finding them randomly, like from gathering mushrooms and stuff. I was lucky to find a rare dark purple colour so I'm the happiest elementalist alive.
Someone mentioned that you can make random dyes with cooking, not sure if it's right though. I wish they were linked to the account 'cuz there are just so many of them.
Elementalist is currently at 22.
-
Everyone should play mesmer. Mesmers always have a use.
-
Everyone should play mesmer. Mesmers always have a use.
I didn't much like them. But then again I didn't like the engineer and gave it up before getting any of the interesting toolkits.
So what's so great about the mesmers?
-
They dominate pvp, and are essential for most higher end pve.
Also, in the previous game, they dealt true/unresisted damage, which made them vastly superior to elementalists in terms of damage. Dunno if that still holds true.
They just suck *** for general pve.
But still, <3
-
****ing mesmers, you guys. In PVP I mean.
You encounter a pair of mesmers with your friend. What does this mean?
YOU ARE FIGHTING LIKE 18 DUDES HAVE FUN WITH THAT, ****er
No but seriously it's a nightmare. PVP is pretty fun though, I was having a bit of the old VOIP funtimes with three friends as we played hours of PVP. Oftentimes not being on the same team, which would usually be brutal.
Shame that there's only 3 maps for that particular mode, I'm hoping there will be more maps or are in the other modes?
Still haven't tried WVWVW
-
I can deal with mesmers. You know who I can't deal with? Thieves. They. Won't. Stop. Moving.
-
Have yet to visit pvp stuff. I'm feeling like such a glasscannon.
Kinda scraping together money to get gems so that I can unlock an extra character slot. It would be sweet to have more characters to play on. Also want to get a larger bank, that one is filled with stuff already. Cool items I'm gonna transmute my gear into, chests, some of those exp boost items, gems and runes for inscriptions, yeah you get it.
-
The dosh comes in a lot easier at higher levels. I 100%'d Blazeridge Stepps (40-50 zone) and I got a lot of cash from that. I'd say a gold but it's hard to tell exactly how much.
Mind you gems are still bloody expensive, though cheaper than they were. I've spent 800? on expanding my one character's inventory. I really need to save up for the bank though.
-

Think the inventory is 500 and the bank is 600, I'm saving up 800 for the character slot. World transfer will cost something around 500 later as well.
I bought like 360gems for 1 gold. Seemed like a fair deal. Almost there.
But I find it odd that people don't want to buy stuff from the trading post and all. I got far too much ore and leathers and such. Around like 200 bronze bars at one point. Put them up for 50% more than I'd get for selling it to the vendor and still no one bought it.
And selling stuff by sending it through a mail to someone isn't exactly safe. You just have to rely on that person actually giving you the money. No trading window is pretty odd.
Currently at 29. My crafts are around 60-80
-
The trick to the tp is selling rare stuff just a tini bit above lowest price. I amde sooo much money off farming vials of blood for 2 hours. Like 2 gold. Spent all on upper gear.
-
Just a shame the TP is down all the time.
Also kinda sad or something of the kind that I can't simply join someone else playing their story missions and get rewards for it. I can participate but be nothing more than a Sidekick. Can't activate things, can't speak to people and no rewards or quest updates will reach me.
-

How many would you guestimate you are selling for that much
-
I had like 214 or something like that. Yesterday i made another gold selling stuff that didn't sell on tp to the npc. I was surprised. I needed money for the trait book tier 2. Now I am broke.
-
So I just hit 30 and I bought another character slot.
Anyone knows if there's a cap to those character slots?
Also, professions gives a lot of exp. Finally got my artificer and tailor to 75 which allowed me to use all of my soft wood and iron ore I've collected.
Had the collection tab full with both of them, 250 in each. It gave me a lot of levels and a lot of exp. Glorious.
-
Wow, I bet you all are stuck in the game or something. I can't be the only person who have something to say about the game.
Just passed 40 with my elementalist, got two additional character slots, a guild with a guild bank and like I donno 11 members. Still no PvP for me though.
Engineer - not my type of class.
Warrior - love the 2handed weapon skills.
Elementalist - just a huge pile of love.
Ranger - fantastic skills on many good weapons. Shortbow for bleeding and poison damage, greatswords and longbows for direct "oh **** my butt hurts"-damage.
Guardian - interesting class that I need to spend more hours on.
Thief - loving them more and more, mobile, good damage and all that. Just had to revisit what stats I went for. Glasscannons don't do well in these types of games. Need more toughness and vitality.
-
Level 80 now. Raising an engineer char. It seems kinda fun but the skills are wonky.
And I told you those damn thieves don't stop moving!
