Title: Xenoblade Chronicles Discussion *Spoilers off the ghecko!!*
Post by: daoman89 on August 27, 2012, 04:07:19 AM
So I've finally finished the story...  Goddamn what an experience that was!  How many twists did they throw in there near the end?  I really enjoyed the ending scene, especially when the colonel was yelling at the poor soldier hahaha.  Any favorited scenes??

You really liked this game huh?

About the story. I wasn't completely happy about the introduction of the omniscient antagonist. It just felt... cheap. Yeah sure japanese people made the game I get that these things happen. But it just felt like it ruined a perfectly fine feeling the game had going with Reshiram against Zekrom, organic vs machina.
So yeah, didn't much like that plot twist.
I liked the part where the those people became Telethia. But it also made me restart the game to finish off some of the sidequests in that area. Just a bit. "whaaaaaaaaa?"

More things I appreciated about Xenoblade chronicles:
Equipment changing appearance of characters. (although some of it seemed like unnecessary fanservice. And by that I mean for both genders.)
Passive abilities that allowed you to actually form your characters. It wasn't like most games that let's you increase the damage of your skills or improve something you're already good at. There were a bunch (5) of trees with different skills and then the posibility to borrow passives from people you built up relationships with.
I liked the affection system. Most games just have "Main character affection to X partymember" but this one allowed you to form affectionate bonds between all playable characters. And I get that this doesn't happen a lot in games because that's a whole lot of affections to build when you have like 8 characters.
Affection cutscenes. I liked those, going around and finding event spots and activating a cutscene if the affection between two certain characters was high enough. Some scenes were of course better than others.
The size. Size do matters, especially when you fill it with great landscapes, enemies and quests that needs to be done.
Levling up is more or less essential but luckily there are so many quests that you'll never fall behind. (although this itself was a problem, when finally leaving an area after completing the available quests I was usually 1-3levels above the mosnters of the next area).
Battle system. I liked it but it had a whole bunch of flaws. The 3 different skills that triggered each other. Stun, trip and daze was a nice touch. Did it a lot better than dragon age 2. I liked the auras, it was a nice touch. Like that huge spider with the paralyzing aura. Each hit made you paralyzed. Great for raising affection but a recipe for wipe.
Characters. Battlewise I felt that there was a nice variation amongst the characters.
Schulk got the monado and monado skills but more or less the balanced person.
Rayne got a lot of tanking skills but also some good damage dealers.
Fiora had a whole bunch of bleeding and area of effect skills. Also low cooldowns on almost anything. Just a shame she can't wear as many items as the rest.
Sharla is the first character with actual healing but had that overheat system which was a nice touch.
Dunban had a whole bunch of useful skills, also the added effects to skills used after his signature skill.
Melia was one of my favourite characters, incredible damage and the whole magic orb summoning was interesting and felt fresh. Completely worthless as party member though. (Lightning damage boost, get it!)
Rikki I'm never too fond of the cute comical relief characters but he was darn useful in battles. Great damage over times and status problems but still more skills that were good.

Favourite scene - the one where you get the dodge aura for Schulk and they go death by slowmotion on that boss.
Also most scenes with metalface. A really boring name for a villain but they had some nice feeling.

My favorite was when Shulk came back.  Showed how everyone worked together, example being Reyn when he blocked for everyone.  Then Shulk comes and obliterates the Telethia with this hidden message "Sorry to keep you waiting" after he lands.  From nerd to badass.

I realised one of the parts of this game that I liked. The fact that it was long. It's been some time since a game actually gave me a long experience. Games like the last story and pandoras tower ended before 30hours had been reached.
Yeah I know. Modern games don't do random encounters and atb/turn based combat with overdone animations that drags out the time. But it just says something about a game when you spend a ridiculous amount of time on it without noticing.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't own a Wii. I own a giant white brick that rarely if ever gets used. XD

I use mine for SSBB and occasionally Twilight Princess. I haven't bought Skyward Sword even though I've been meaning to. To be honest, the last console game I bought was Skyrim and I wasn't even aware that this game was for the Wii until I looked it up. I'm so out of touch...not much time to play video games anymore, sadly.

Never heard of. Also don't own a Wii and don't plan on buying one.
I have some time to play games, but I'm apparently quite out of touch as well...

Assuming, of course, you time travel back to two or three years ago.

A true blue RPG for the Wii sounds interesting, though. Maybe I'll give it a try sometime. How much are the motion controls used?

I use mine for SSBB and occasionally Twilight Princess.

Explain "occasionally"? Unless you're talking about things like fishing and minigames.

You assume I would be against those. :3

None. As far as I remember. Button clicks it is.

Also the battle system kinda reminds me something of dragon age 2. I might be crazy though.
