Title: FFXIV A Realm Reborn Beta
Post by: DragonBlaze on June 14, 2013, 03:26:32 AM
So I just got invited to beta test FF14 ARR, probably because I bought the shitty original game after they dropped it to $20 and dropped the subscription fee. I have high hopes for this game, mainly because Square Enix has fucked up so much recently, they have to get something right eventually. Has anyone else gotten access to the beta? MMOs are fun and all, but I don't like them much unless I'm playing with buddies.

Nope, never tried Square's MMOs, something about them needing credit cards and when I was a kid I did not have a credit card to pay with.

Is it good?

Don't know, I still haven't finished installing the beta. By time I got the original FF14 they stopped charging because it was that bad, though from all of the MMOs I've played, the real fun come from how you and your friends play it. FF14 was beautiful but poorly balanced, FF14 is supposed to use the same graphics engine but redo everything about the story and balancing.

Playing ARR sort of like feel moving into an area that was covered in nuclear fallout a few months ago, but absolutely everyone assures you that it's safe.

Sure, maybe it's safe, but why not try something that doesn't have a horrible reputation? Stars know there's enough MMORPGs out there.

Thats true. ARR is definitely better than the original, though I haven't played much of it. Turns out that some friends just started playing WOW, so I did something I never thought I'd do and started playing as well.

It's a great game, lots of content.

Yeah I'm really liking it so far. I'm a lvl 11 Worgen warrior, and it's a fun character to play as, and I'm really liking the pretty much everything about it thus far.

[rant]Except the other players. It's probably just because they're noobs, but it seems like everyone else is an ***hole or just retarded. I can't tell you how many times I'm rushing in to attack a boss, and all of a sudden a druid, archer, or mage does an instant attack on them from far away, so I have to wait for the boss to respawn. These are the same players that I invited to my party a few minutes earlier because I noticed we were doing the same stuff. Then theres also a quest in the worgen storyline with a 15 minute timer. The boss at the end is bugged and using this quest ability that is supposed to help actually completely heals her. I kept telling people not to use it, but they wouldn't listen, after we all did it three times without actually finishing it, I told the other players to f*** off and quit for the night.[/rant]

Yeah, other people are pretty much the problem as with any MMORPG.

I liked how guild wars 2 did it, as long as you participated - you got the loot and progress. Can't imagine going back to spawn camping.

Terra online does it well too. They have different channels in each server that you can switch to on the fly. If you notice there are a lot of people in channel 1, you can quick switch over to channel 7 on the fly.

I've tried a few times to get into MMOs, but they're really not all that fun to play. They're essentially giant fetch quests or kill monster missions forever. They're so pointless, so repetitive, and usually aren't too fun in the way of combat. I can understand having a group of friends to play with as an experience enhancer, but it just doesn't make the games worth the time or money. I suppose the fact that most MMOs require a monthly fee only makes me less satisfied with them. The games aren't worth $60 to me, so why would I tack on another $100 or so per year?

Well basically there is a lot more content to these games than a singleplayer game of the same price. Which is why one can spend so much time with it. Otherwise you kinda have to get Monster hunter and farm for monster parts, or play some online FPS to reach the same playtime.

The only MMO that I keep coming to repeatedly is Spiral Knights.
It's on steam and free to play.

it's like a party based dungeon crawler with some light quests and top-down zelda style combat
It's super fuckin' fun.

MMOs by themselves aren't that fun. While they have more content, they also much at a much slower pace than a single player game. What makes it fun is playing with other people. I moved half way across the country to California last year, and games are how I keep in touch with my friends I can't see anymore. Halo or other FPS games are fun to do for an hour or so, but there's something about exploring a giant fantasy world with friends that is epic.

Spiral Knights is fun to play solo.

Another good MMO if you guys feel like it is Path of Exile.
Which is ridiculously fun, even though I've only really played it once.

Spiral Knights actually is pretty fun, but I stopped playing it when my friends didn't want to join in.

I love MMOs, simply because I have no problem whatsoever doing the exact same things over and over again. And then I start a new character and do it all over one more time.

BTW, I signed up for the Beta. We'll see if I get one or not.

Well, on the upside, you're perfectly suited for the job market.

Well, on the upside, you're perfectly suited for the job market.

That would be the case unless people are mostly hiring social and outgoing workers. I don't get the point of having a move interesting lunch over actually getting the job done but whatever.

I usually spend the summers working in an archive that according to local (and incredibly stupid/untrustworthy) myth have driven people mad. It's basically collecting the post, sort it, grab a sorted pile and put it into the right file. Also creating new files for the documents that are supposed to go into a file that isn't there. It's pretty much the same thing 40 hours a week.

Update. It seems like I did get a beta invite. It just happened to be stuck in my trashbin. Good that I'm done with the chaingame so I can give this a spin

Never been a big fan of betas, games look so shady when they are unfinished, It gets my scam senses tingling

Because I had to sign one of those secrecy thingies I can't disclose any information about it. Yesterday was the first beta day I played, the graphics look great. Took a while before any actual combat though.
