Title: Any of you guys play MOBAs?
Post by: Grandy on July 21, 2013, 02:18:56 AM
I started playing LoL due to a reccommendation from some friends, and it was my first game of the genre.

In a nutshell; the game is great, the community is so terrible as to suck away all the joy from the game and warp it into pure distilated hatred.

I understand most MOBAs are like that?

Massively Online Battle Arena?
**** if I know.

No, I don't play LoL, don't really want to.
My mother's side of the family is addicted to it, though.
Any time I go to my grandma's house they're either playing, drawing fanart, or thinking about playing.

Massively Online Battle Arena?

According to google, yea.

I play LoL, I enjoy Smite, and I want to learn to play DotA. I'm in a closed beta for a DC-themed MOBA, but I'm not too interested in it.

MOBAs are pretty much the same when it comes down to the fun vs. community thing. They're too teamwork-centric to afford mistakes and people who don't know what they're doing can make the game frustrating. The negative attitude is understandable, but it's still bad for the community.

Play with friends, learn the ropes, and ignore the haters.

Multiplayer Online Battle Arena to be precise. Games like League of Legends, Dota 2, Awesomenauts and aimed at competitive online experiences in which two teams fight each other. While I own Awesomenauts and everyone who has Steam owns Dota 2, League of Legends even being free, I don't care much for the genre. It doesn't appeal to me, even though I'm a fan of competitive multiplayer to some extend.

Yeah. It's called Infinite Crisis (http://www.infinitecrisis.com/en) (gee, I wonder where that name came from), and it has a ton of DC heroes and villains with all sorts of Multiverse versions of each character (some of which are original). It's a nice start, but it lacks certain elements that make the game playable for me (like key-binding and alternate camera control options). It'll likely be a ton of fun once it gets further into development, but it's hard for me to enjoy right now.

Yes, you can throw cars around.

Anyway, I've always preferred the term ARTS (Action Real-Time Strategy) since it better describes the games. "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena" sounds like it would be better suited towards a game like Quake.

Interesting.  I won't be playing any of those though.  I'm not a huge gamer haha.  I just play to get away.

I play LoL and watch Dota 2 championships.
They are good time wasters, but I really wish the games had more variety.

I think I'll be signing up for that DC game for now, even if the beta will probably not be avaiable for over here :/

Not so much any more, but I play Dota 2 from time to time. Community for public games is actually pretty good, no one bitches and whines when you mess up.

Only good when you know the people you play with. Don't care much about the people you play against they will, according to customs, always shout profanity at you and call you lame.
If you play with randoms on your team you just end up getting frustrated.

Played the classic WC3 DOTA for a long time as well as some others out there, but as mentioned. The moment you no longer have your team, the game kinda sucks. People kinda moved away and got jobs and wives and stuff, no time to geek out a DOTA type game for an entire saturday.

I was never a big fan of MOBAs, though they can be fun here and there. I actually just got DOTA 2 because it seems interesting, but haven't played it yet.

I'm down for either, I just looked up LoL and it looks pretty good. If we get a group to play one game or the other, I'll go ahead and install the game and figured out all of that account stuff.

I would like to point out that, while I'm pretty good at LoL, I'm pretty awful at Dota. It's mostly because I've played LoL for a few hundred hours and know the majority of the game like the back of my hand whereas I only have a dozen or so hours in Dota and know next to nothing about how the game plays, but I figured it's worth mentioning. If possible, a mentor figure volunteering for a Dota group would be awesome. I can mentor for LoL.

I'd love to play lol with you guys, but I think the server and lag issues in a fast-paced game like this one will be a tad little bit more important than in a game like Minecraft.

Is it required that you have your own server like in Minecraft or do LoL and Dota 2 have official servers you can play on? I may be buying a server in a month or so.

Title: Re: Any of you guys play MOBAs?
Post by: Cerebus on July 23, 2013, 08:00:22 PM
LoL has their own server. Whether you create or join a game, it's on theirs. No buying nor renting required. I'm not sure about DotA2, but I'm quite confident that it's the same.

I do play LoL every 10 solar eclipses, but mostly against bots because I'm not really good at this game and am a bit worried my lack of skills could make the game unpleasant for other people. I'm fairly sure I wouldn't be too bad if I kept playing online, but meh. I also dislike losing, especially by a large margin, so I'd much rather play against bots and go 50/0/10 than play against and with people and go 3/13/2 and be insulted all game long.

I just remembered that there are regional servers for LoL. I don't know if that restricts who you can play with, but it's worth mentioning.

I know you can change region for a small fee. I think they arrived later on, though, so older accounts might still be on American servers.

I suppose, although minus the Brazilian part. LoL community doesn't like Brazilians.

My account name is ZesherSwiftclaw, but I haven't installed the client yet, so I'm not sure if I need to set up another name such as a character name.

Can we start with bots? :p
Title: Re: Any of you guys play MOBAs?
Post by: Archem on July 24, 2013, 03:13:18 AM
As long as your account name is secured, that should also be your user name (unless you pay to change it). And of course we can start with bots. It's preferred.
Title: Re: Any of you guys play MOBAs?
Post by: Cerebus on July 24, 2013, 03:17:29 AM
You'll need a summoner name, no? I'm pretty sure account name and summoner names are different.

I suggest doing the tutorial by yourself first. It's pretty short. Then, you can play against bots. Custom would probably be the best since you'll be able to decide how many bots to put in the game, and you won't have to deal with other people. So you can go 1v1, 2v2, 4v3, 5v0, etc. You can do this until you learn the game's basics. Then, later on, you can practice specific roles, although I suggest doing this with other people as teammates since bots won't really act like the role they should have and they'll always try to last hit your minions. You'll learn more about this as you play.

So anyway, yeah. Summoner name and play against bots until you get the basis of the game. Have some people when you want to practice specific roles.

Add me on league, Captain Rook. Or CaptainRook. I forget, I'm only level 17.

I play pretty sporadically, largely because I have a couple friends that if I go over to their place it's play League or go home. Like, she alone has 1700 wins. With a w/l of like 1/3.

I don't like calling them MOBA's. I dunno. Just don't.

Ugh, don't even get me started on League...

Dominion is a quiet little place where almost none of the jackasses ever venture into. If you want to play the game but don't feel like dealing with the angry jerks, this is the place where you go.

My brother is a League player. He's on a team. They do practice matches and "drills". If he's not playing League, he's watching League. If he's not watching League, he's reading League. He gets all the latest tweets and facebook statuses and interviews with "famous" League players. If his computer is on then League is on. It's like a drug to him.  :x

I personally think LoL is over-hyped, it's an ok average game, it just baffles me that so many people rave about it like it's the next best thing since the invention of fire.

Now to answer the originial question in the title: Yes I do play them. Most of them are on steam. I'll name a few...

Just for the record, I totally recommend Smite (http://www.hirezstudios.com/smitegame/home). It focuses on mythological gods and has a behind-the-back camera, giving you more direct control over the action (and integrating a little player skill into the game). It's a lot of fun, and it has a number of simplified systems to make it easy to learn. Because of the fact that there is no fixed camera, the meta is pretty forgiving, so you won't be harassed as much for making a "bad pick".

Well, I suppose you could always add me for whenever you feel like playing against bots, whether in a custom game or in a Co-op vs. AI (although I personally prefer Custom since I can sort of decide about the flow of the game).

Then, once you feel like trying online, you can team up with people who have more LoL confidence, although I may be willing to play ARAM some times since bad games can be forgiven. For those not in the know, ARAM stands for "All Random All Mid", which means everyone receive a random character and must fight in the single lane (until recently, as there wasn't any one-lane map, so everyone just fought in the middle one, hence the name). Teams can end up being atrociously unbalanced and you might be given a character you despise and are horrible with, so other players won't trash-talk you if you can't perform well.

I don't play a lot these days, though, but I tend to come back to this game every once in a while. My summoner name is Kherazov.

League of Legends players are even worse than Call of Duty players, and those guys are royal douchebags.

It funny but I was just having a conversation about how LoL players are a bunch of whiny bitches that moan about their first world problems. It's just a game, you lost, big ****ing deal life goes on.
Title: Re: Any of you guys play MOBAs?

I managed to deal with the crappy community by playing with bots.
They'll never complain about any bad moves you may make nor do they whine about losing. Plus, I can build whatever item I want, play any character I want, play the way I want. The only real inconvenient is that bots aren't really smart some times and don't do stuff players would normally do, and you'll never get any real team fight. But between whiny asses and dumb bots, I'll choose the bots.

Friends would probably be better, but I don't really have any that play LoL.
Title: Re: Any of you guys play MOBAs?

I'm doing the same thing Cerb. After a disasterous match that put my mostly newbie team against 4 level 70+s (for comparison, the "good" player on my team was level 14) and we lost (though admittedly didn't lose 100% TOO hard - we had a decent thing going until midgame) we decided that playing against other players was bullshit and to bot it up until we all felt comfortable trying players again. Which may be never. But the bot games are still fun cuz its fun to play with friends period.

Alternatively you can also close your chatbox and mute all the players.

As a rule of thumb whenever I play a game like CoD or LoL I just mute/block/ignore EVERYONE. I find it a much more pleasant experience. They can scream till their lungs burst and they can pound their keyboards until their fingers fall off, I'll be perfectly oblivious to it all. :D

Of course the downside is that sometimes these jackasses use the "report a player" option, because apparently ignoring them is a sin. _sweat_
Title: Re: Any of you guys play MOBAs?

Failure to communicate in a game that requires high levels of teamwork is a negative contribution to the game, so yeah, it's a semi-legitimate report. It doesn't really matter, though, as moderators can easily see if you've blocked communications for a good reason or if you're simply ignoring team commands (which basically adds up to feeding the enemy team kills).

I'm more bothered by crushing losses against drastically superior opponents than I am about trash talk. At this point, nobody can say anything on the internet that can actually hurt me. But I would like to try a good matchup, and I'm just not good at the game enough yet to perform against people that have been playing for the past few years solid.

I've been on a horrible losing streak recently, and it's making it hard for me to want to play. My losses are out of control, and while my teammates are frequently responsible for making horrible plays and decisions, I've been unable to pull it together on my end as well. I'm kind of getting psyched out by the stress of trying to break my bad streak.

I'll get over it eventually.

i don't like team based games
The exception to this is if I'm playing with friends or if it's a local multiplayer thing (which is annoyingly rare these days).
It's a crippling inability to communicate thing, for me.
Also I'm SO noncompetitive it's kind of sad.
Title: Re: Any of you guys play MOBAs?
Post by: Archem on August 07, 2013, 08:52:14 PM
I love team-based games because the weight of success doesn't lie exclusively on my shoulders. In a more casual situation where personal ability can directly affect the outcome of a game (FPSes), it means that I'm free to crush the opposition at my own speed while the team does their best to look as good as me. It also means I can goof off a bit or have a bad match and have the team pick up the slack. In MOBAs, that's not quite the same, as instead of having a few successful players leading the team to success, the entire team has to be successful and coordinated. It's pretty uncommon for a single player to be able to carry the entire team, so if even one person isn't working with the team to secure that goal, it falls through.

I guess what I'm saying is that heavily team-oriented games are the ones where you need to be competitive, but most team games are just a way of having others support you.

But I would like to try a good matchup, and I'm just not good at the game enough yet to perform against people that have been playing for the past few years solid.

Yeah, there's that. I'm not really good and I'm usually teamed up with people of equal skills, but against people who are better. The results were often not fun. Dying continuously and knowing you're hindering your team makes the game unpleasant. having the whole team dying continuously without any hope of winning is also very unpleasant.
And same as you, good luck saying something that actually offends me. But the attitude is still very annoying and often contributes to a lost. Saw my brother playing with someone who kept doing stupid crap but who kept blaming every other players, noticing every single mistake they made (although he made several more) and continuously saying "gg we lost" while initiating a surrender every time he could. I wasn't even playing on that game and found him really annoying, and would have found the game quite non-enjoyable had I been in it. It's just annoying. And as been pointed out by Archem, blocking communication can contribute to a loss more than negative attitude. Even whiny arses can eventually do good moves assuming the team follow them. Ignoring someone cancels the slight potential of such things happening.
Another thing that some will do is purposely play like crap or just go AFK, which in most cases ensure a defeat. It really is a crappy community.

Bots never complain and I rarely lose against bots. When I do, it's usually because I've played carelessly. But if I do get a loss, it's never a crushing one, so it's not as unpleasant. Just wish they'd be a little better on teamwork, but oh well.

I'm usually not really fond of team-based games because a single person's mistake is often unforgivable, whereas in other game, you can still win by a large margin despite having 2 unskilled players. But somehow, I really like LoL. Kinda wish I had more real life friends who played it, as it could possibly encourage me to try online once in a while, but oh well.

ARAM is a pretty fun mode in LoL. As the name suggests (or did back before it became official), everyone gets a random character and gets thrown into a single lane. Since everyone has a random character, nobody really gets mad if you're bad. They'll still get on you for not focusing the squishy damage dealers, but you should be able to figure that out. Also, since the game is in a constant state of team fight (and because everyone starts at level 3), the games are shorter, so you don't have to sit through a 50 minute loss. It's great for learning new characters, great for learning to play against human players, and great for skipping the fluff and getting straight into the action. Since teamwork is minimized, it's also a good mode for you if you like to mute all the other players.

I've been playing lots of it recently. Helps me practice and relieve some stress from my constant stream of losses in regular matches.

Ah, yes, ARAM. I tried it a bit. Pretty much the only mode where mistakes are forgiven, because you can blame it on random factor; you may end up with a character you absolutely don't know and aren't good with or the team may simply be really unbalanced.
It's fun, but it can be quite chaotic, and you can never really "rest" except when you're dead. I should play this game mode some times, though. A bit of "teamwork practice" (sort of) although it won't help me get better with ganking and stuff... Just a shame it doesn't add up to my "Win" stats. Looks kinda silly when you are matched up with people who are lower level than you but have 100+ victories when you only have 29 yourself...

ARAM is an official mode now, so it counts.

Are you sure? I remember getting at least one victory in ARAM and I still have 29 wins. I guess I could try it again and hope for the best.

Just downloaded Dota2 from steam, saw the championship on national tv and stuff (yeah we kinda do that in Sweden...), it was free and all. First thing that struck me is that sure they changed the models but you still see what Warcraft 3 character these were based on. Basically because they are the same characters as the original dota but still.

Yet revealed if I like it. These things tend to have steep learning.
