Title: RPG Maker Humble Bundle
Post by: Archem on May 29, 2014, 06:34:57 PM
So for those of you still interested in RPG Maker, there's a Humble Bundle this week that's all RPGM stuff. Steam activated products including RPGM VX and XP are included. For all they're offering, the price tag is a complete steal. I might end up buying in, even though I'm not very interested in RPGM anymore.

Dang you beat me to it.

Also note the gamemaking contest they are having for those of you who still do have an interest in the makers or free code.

Obviously it's great to get stuff at the Humble Bundle price of "pay whatever you want," but six bucks for that is not at all a bad deal.

And there's a character sprite and tileset creator/manager utility of some sort at the $12 level.  I'm going to get it all (even though I already own VX Ace and multiple DLC for it).

If I bothered enough I would get the 6. I just wish the actual RPG maker games it came with didn't look boring.

Problem with Ace/XP games is that they all look like the same watered down garbage. Hard to really find a gem that stands out among them.

This is mostly due to the fact that the quality is so much higher, so people looking to make their game unique have to put in that much more effort... which gets tiresome.

I also noticed that VX ace got a character generator built into the maker. Creates a charset and faceset for you based on your choices of hair, clothes, colours accessories ect. I'm guessing that makes people use it for all the NPCs in the game.

Also the quality as Meis mentioned. A tile is 32x32 in Ace, that's twice the size of 2003. As in, it needs to be twice as detailed. Also, built in semi-transparency in tilesets and so.

The boring part is the lack of battlechars, that charsets are only 32x32 as well (they look small and chubby, like the first pokemon trainers) I also haven't found a way to change weapon types or attributes.

I personally hate VX/Ace's art style. My issue with most XP/VX ace games is that they use a system that has such great scripting capabilities yet have such dull and boring combat systems. They're all bland random encounter turn based combat systems with absolutely nothing engaging about them. Where's the tactic based combat? Where's the chrono trigger style combat? I can only handle so many turn based fantasy RPGs with magical plots before I lost my god damned mind.

Four times the size, yes, but it's only double the detail.

True, got stuck at thinking that it has twice the width and twice the height.

but 2 times 2 is 4.

Damn, I would totally take advantage of that if I still used RPG maker.

I agree with the graphics and battle issue issues of XP and Ace, but pretty much everything else about them is much better than 2k/2k3 since the graphics for the most part could be any size or color depth, which means you can fit all of the tiles you could possibly want on a tile sheet, or make characters any physical size you wanted. Plus the scripts made it much easier to make or simply import custom systems and other nifty stuff like like pixel movement. You can convert the 2k/2k3 graphics to XP/Ace, but it's kind of a pain to do that for everything.
