The other day I was listening to a Metallica song and suddenly I got impatient with the instrumental bit and just wanted to get to the LYRICS! O.o Previously I couldn't listen to any bad without some serious thrashing and pounding and now I find I actually like hearing the lyrics and interpreting their meaning. Not to say that I don't think all instrumental pieces like Orion aren't awesome, they are, or that I'd give up metal for something easier to deceypher buuuuut I think it marks a change doesn't it? Anybody ever had a moment like that? Musically or otherwise.

Tricky one, I think I started to notice the lyrics of English music when I was like 9-10 or so. Haven't been able to stop doing that. Still enjoy instrumental pieces like Apocalyptica and such though. I guess that's why I also started listening to concept albums like Coheed and Cambria. Music is more than just lyrics though.
At the same time there are lots of people over here who don't listen to the lyrics, besides perhaps the chorus. And even then it feels like people are just singing along rather than understanding the lyrics. I think I've mentioned Frank Zappa's Bobby Brown before, the fact that people just dig the song and sing along with the chorus and/or the lyrics without getting the satire of it can be pretty annoying, it's like they pronounce the words but don't reflect over what they mean. I guess music doesn't need to be both good instrumental and on the lyrics apartment. And at the same time, alot of music is.

Wouldn't be maturing considering "mature music" is classical instrumental pieces. Either way, it's probably just you having listened to it too much and getting tired of it. It happens. Listen to some more lyrical music for some time.

I'm appreciating things like Bob Dylan more now, which I guess is a similar thing. If you find yourself getting impatient in the middle of a metallica song then you should probably go see a doctor though.

I hate most of the music that somehow becomes popular here in America. Lyrics are generic and instrumentally they are terrible. The only thing they have is catchy choruses and being famous in the first place. Paramore's latest album, self titled, sucks. Wtf happened with that? Must be because the writers of their old songs left the band because for one reason out of a few others, ppl only cared about Hayley.
Ive heard crappy rap artists on the Arsenio Hall show before he got cancelled after Leno said he was getting a second season lol. Sure songs can be good with just one element as Purp mentioned, but imo truly great songs have great lyrics with the message's theme instrumentals playing to give the listener a specific emotion on top of being catchy and interesting.
I dont listen to much pure screaming metal cause idk wth they're saying and theres no vocal depth or melody. Hrrrgrrr grrah rggrrrghh **** grrrrhrrr gaaaaaah! Yeah, no thanks. Instrumental parts are usually good though, but i now require more!

But most video game music is purely instrumental

It sounds like you're getting bored with traditional rock. I think it's about time you tried delving into the world of progressive rock/metal.
Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element, Part I [FULL ALBUM] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEiWxpv3VLA#ws)
There's a whole world or music out there that defies traditional music conventions and experiments with what can be done musically. I hate to be one of those prog guys who tells you everything that isn't prog isn't worth your time, but once you get into it, most other music just seems simple, predictable, and boring.

Bored during Metallica? Treason! :Plight: :  :Plight: They are the kings of Metal! Somebody arrest this man and send him to the audio dungeon for I sentence him to listin to Metallica till he has come to be a loyal citizen of Metal again!!

Again, not to be "that guy", but Metallica hasn't been interesting since the 80s.
-
^ Agreed. I stopped caring about listening to it long ago.
Even gone to the point of skipping in on shuffle because I'd much rather hear other things.
-
My music taste has always been all over the place. One month it's all metal and the next one it can be a Russian man-choir.

Oh really? What about Death Magnetic?

True, but i was talking about bands with vocals.
I'm going to get assassinated for saying this too. I as well have gotten sick of Metallica, at least until i get in that rare mood of listening. Some songs are just too long and I've become more interested in bands wherr the singers can actually sing well. Sorry guys, i don't think their vocalist is the greatest thing ever. NOT saying i hate them now though!
VGM, my favorite soundtrack still holds true of being Chrono Cross OST. It's just great and hits that nostalgia button. I fear for Bravely Second's soundtrack though since they're switching composers. I've heard good things about the composer for Xenoblade X, so ill be lookin forward to that. I think the guy did the music in the anime Attack On Titan (except the theme songs who were Linked Horizon)?

Love xenoblade's music.

I stand by what I've said previously.
