I know its all moddable, but I reeallllly loathe the character sprite art in VX Ace. Freakish big-headed characters that makes everyone look like they're 3 year olds.

Agreed. The sprite art is bad. Plus, unlike most other game dev kits, not having an option to choose screen res, tile size, etc., and thus being forced to use 32x32 tiles is frustrating as all hell.

I really enjoy it, I make my own tilesets and import 2k3 charsets so it works out really well. Theres so much more functionality to it than the old makers too.

I did the opposite: I just bought 2k3 on Steam. I have a lot of graphics for it, including things I made, and I find all the functionality actually prevents me from getting anything done since I get obsessed with scrips and then don't know enough Ruby to make them work properly for my ideas.

Yeah, 2k3 is much friendlier for the casual hobbyist. At one time, I thought I'd learn Java and Ruby, but I just don't have any extra time and my other hobbies are much more important to me.

Rgmk 2003 is also available on Steam. It's basically the same thing but stuff has new names and everything is working as intended.
