A long time ago, either a little before or after everyone was into yoyos, a lot of people were into these virtual pets (or at least they were where I lived). Most of the ones I saw were very stupid, only being able to feed and play with them. For some odd reason (it may have been a gift) I got one like them, exept they were monsters that grew, and you could fight other people with them. But then again that got very boring because no one else had them and thus I couldn't fight anyone.
Then I got this idea from watching an (not so great) anime show called Dragon Drive. Anyway in the show there is this virtual reality game, and at the start of the game each person got a monster of some sort assigned to them based on their characteristics and such, so anyway heres the idea I came up with for a rm2k3 or xp game.
At the start of the game you are asked a series of questions, depending on how you answer them, and a randomized variable in there, you get a little monster, I would like there to be over 100 possible outcomes (note differant colors/elements are differant outcomes). Then you can train and customize and take care of your monster in various ways to make it grow stronger, gain experiance, and change its apperance.
By gaining experiance you can select what skills you want to learn, there would be differant paths you can take while learning skills to make your character even more customizable. Also if you abuse your monster and get him beat up all the time, he won't like you, and will start to ignore your comands.
After a little while your monster will be old enough to do various quests in a little world, and fight to become the champion. The coolest part about it is that I want to get a script made with ruby for rmxp that allows you to battle other people from the internet, but i dont know if that will be possible.
Anyway this is an idea that i came up with last night, and well I probably will never get around to doing it since I have other projects, but it is something to think about. So what do you think about this?

I think you need to learn how to make polls.
It sounds like Pokemon except with only one Pokemon. I dunno. Maybe it could be fun.
-
It does sound a lot like Pokemon, but slightly cooler. I think it would make a decent game.
-
Lol, i was making the poll while you posted. :D
Yeah it will be somewhat like pokemon, exept you only have one guy and can customize it a lot more. And even though I hate the pokemon shows and cards, I thought the games where pretty fun.

That's what I thought, but I still think the whole personility quiz is a good idea.
Go ahead and do it. NOW.

Oh I forgot to mention the battle system :)
I wanted to keep away from just selecting a comand to do and then your little monster dose it, so I decided to use a mixture of an ABS, and a regular rpg battle system.
You are able to move freely around a battle map (as your monster), when you get to where you want to launch an attack, you push a number on the numpad 1-9. Each differant key will have a differant skill linked to it that you set before hand how you want. Attacks such as slash would be preformed almost instantly and would require you to be right next to the enemy. More powerfull attacks and long range skills will require a bit of a charging time, and once the charge is done the attack is launched. If your opponect leave your attacking range within this time, then you can cancel the attack if you think quick enough and save the monster from wasting any mp or time.
Remember, while you are moving around and selecting attacks, your enemy is as well. So if you are good enough, you will be able to evade the enemies attack by getting out of range, or you could select a blocking move to nullify some of the damage.
Depending on how well you and your monster are "in tune", will determain if there is a lag between your comands and its actions. For example, if you are really bad out of tune, when you push the button to move up, your monster will wait a second or so before he starts moving. If the monster is in tune, he will move instantly.
Speed and obidiance are two other important factors, if you monster has a high speed, he can move around more quickly. If the monster dosesn't have any obidiance, then not all of your comands will be obayed.
There will be other factors such as the monsters personallity that will determain how it fights.
Oh yeah, I didn't mention this before, but the monster will have an artificial personallity unlike pokemon games and such :D

Sounds like Dragon Warrior Monsters mixed with Pokemon mixed with Dragon Warrior mixed with Ultima mixed with Monster Rancher mixed with the Tales of Phantasia. I say.... DO IT.
-
have you ever played digimon world?the first one?
I used to have one of those monsters....
Its a good idea, but, i have a feeling it would be hard.
-
This sound really cool, although alot like monster rancher in many
ways. It will be very hard to do.

S'what I was thinking!
The command lag idea is a cool one, and yet easy to program.
They had that system in Monster Rancher and Digimon World, too.

The only game out of those that I ever played was Pokemon :)(and that was a long time ago)

Nope, I was thinking about downloading it once, but the link was broken, and I really didn't care since I really don't like digimon :P

Never played that either.
As for it being hard to make, heres what I figure.
CBS - Very easy, there will only be one monster you fight at a time, so I wouldn't have to worry at all about switching characters, targeting monsters, or anything like that. All the comands are tied to the number keys, and that will be very easy since all I'll have to do would be to have a differant common event called through each button thats linked to a move.
CMS's - Again shouldn't be too hard, since there will only be one character, there are less things I have to worry about making. The cms's where you customize your monster would be a little more tricky with all the stat points and spells to worry about. But its nothing I can't handle.
Monster personallity and such - This may be a little more tricky, each of the monsters feelings, emotions, and overall personallity will be linked to many differant variables, and will act accordingly. I want to give the monsters the feeling of almost being alive instead of a few differant actions that are programed in it. And although I won't be able to accomplish this, i wanna do the best I can. The hardest part about this would be to have to be getting the monsters to show there personallity.
Grafix - this will be the hardest part of all. Basically if I want to make it so that you can battle other players online, I would have to make it with rmxp, meaning all the monster gfx would be custom made.
And just to get one thing straight, the whole game won't be about battling other players, there will be many other things to do, and since you can never really "win" the game, you don't even have to ever battle if you don't want to.
-
I dunno if the Ruby script in RMXP can support online-ness, but I do know that you can make online games with Byond.
-
I've allready talked to people on doing battles online and they said its possible, but will be very tricky to do. I might have to make a server file, then the game becomes the client. The client would then be able to hook up with the server and people could play online. However since its only two people would be connected at a time, I was hoping to make something where the two games can hook together dirrectly instead of hooking up to a server file.
But yeah, its possible.
-
I've seen that anime its funny how eveyrone else has a dragon as big as a building at first and his is only as big as his arm.
-
Yeah but his little dragon kicks *** in the first 3 matches.
Then in the next 30 he dosn't win any...
-
Hm.. this sounds really kewl! A lot more kewler than pokemon or digimon, after a while all that digimon and pokemon crap got annoying. I mean, it went more to the little kids and never changed, and that was annoying. This could really be kewl.
Just one thing, if you use rmxp, since it is much more illegal than rm2k/3, even if you did get a ruby script for it to be online how would you put it online without basically telling enterbrain, "HEY! I've got an illegal download of yours! FINE ME!(or whatever they do to you.)"
-
I would use a legal version of rmxp, and include all the files needed to run the game in the game file (so you wouldn't need rmxp to run it). So yeah its legal.
And I'm trying to keep my game as far away from pokemon and such as i can. Yeah its gonna have some simularities, but it'll be aimed for a higher age group, and all the monsters will be cool. I remember once when i was baby sitting, I saw an eposode of digimon where there was this big gay teddy bear that shot out heart shaped bubbles from its gut. There will be none of that in my game.
Oh, BTW, I need to think of a name to call this game, if anyone comes up with any ideas, please let me know :)
-
Call it "Darwinisim Unleashed"
-
2 basic but effective names :
Monster
ßreed (and thats a special b)
-
That's the German "esset"(double s) I think. A German would see it an say, "WTH is ssreed?"
Monster sounds good though. Basic, but good. better than my idiot idea.
-
I don't think I'll use monster for a name, I just don't think it has that special something that a name needs. However i may use a term that these monsters are called as a name, although I'm not sure if thats a good idea cuz pokemon and digimon do that as well.
Yeah thats an esset :D, I have no idea how to even get that character with the keyboard I have. I don't think i can since i dont have a numpad...
-
Yeah, DragonBlaze, this could make a pretty cool game, with good programming and enough selection and customizing.
-
Good luck.

Hm...

Some of those names are pretty good. I'll most likely use the EBON to get a name (or at least a starting point for one) :)
-
Just do a like word made out of words that describe them like M.M.B. standing for mega monster battlers or somthing
-
I'd definatly help with the Models and Beta Testing, I'M IN!

I'd definatly help with the Models and Beta Testing, I'M IN!
Thanks, but your gonna have to wait a long time before you can beta test it. I want to wait till enough gfx are made for rmxp that I won't have to use any rtp gfx for chipsets or npcs. And then I'll make all the monster sprites myself so they will all be original and never before seen :D. Also I want to finish up my current game I'm working on (will take about two weeks) then get a ways through my next one (which I am also currently working on :))
Allright right now I need some suggestions on what the various monster types should be like. I don't want to have any "stupid looking" monsters in it such as diglet from pokemon (I had to watch an eposode with them when I was babysitting some kids :x ). I'll add a few "cute" monsters just because some people may like them. However I want most of the monsters to look "cool". I'm going to through in a variaty of dragon like creatures becuase a lot of people find them "cool" or at least they don't have much against them, and a dragon type creature can be widely assorted into creatures like snakes, creatures like raptors, and the regular big four legged ones. I am going to need some suggestions though on what other types of creatures to use though...

Making this in BYOND would be supa easy. And it allows the MMORPG element in it. See, in BYOND, the difficulty depends on what you want to make.
The type of fighting you're thinking of is actually the simplist to make in BYOND, while an RPG battle system would be the hardest. The only problem I can see with yours is having enough maps for the amount of players.
If you want it to be single player up until battles, then BYOND is not the route to go. But if you'd like to make it kind of like a community, start looking at Zilal's Beginner Tutorial 1, that would be what you're looking for.
-
Well I have no idea how to use BYOND, if it requires any scripting language, I doubt I'll use it for this game. I know how to use RM very well and I know how to make every system I need for it, if I use a differant maker, then I have to learn how to make everything I need, which will probably take a very long time. I guess the only way I'll use it is if it has an interface a lot like RM2k(3)/xp or if I get a lot of help from someone who knows how to use the program well.
No matter what maker I use, I want the begining part to not involve anything online. Then later on when you train your monster a bit, you can go off to the rest of the world. Like I said in my first post, I got a lot of the ideas for this game from an anime called "dragon drive". In the first 5 eposodes they train they're playing a virtual reality game called dragon drive. Once the main guy gets strong enough, a person from another world brings him to that world becuase his dragon is some holy dragon, and also they were afraid that the people running the dragon drive game would use his power to do bad things. I really want to stay away from using anything like a virtual world or being sucked away to another world, but I don't want you to be able to just go off into the world at the start of the game. I have a few ideas that aren't cliche at all for this part, so don't worry :D
After you go off to the start though is when you could meet up with other players, if I'm using RMXP, that would mean you could only battle them (asuming I get that scripted), if I make it with something like BYOND, then you could actually talk to other players and such.
