Title: World Maps
Post by: Almeidaboo on January 17, 2005, 05:01:21 AM
What the hell is happening to these RPGs of nowadays? Cuz, one of the coolest things about them were the world maps that you WALKED ON. Now we only have these stupid click-and-go world maps that are good for nothing! I hate it!

I also realized that theyīre (the game producers) give priority to graphics over the storyline. Thatīs probably why we do not have more FF7s, FF6s...I was playing Arc of The Lad for PS2. Awsome graphics. Totally over-explored storyline! Ridiculous actually. Same for Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarters: cool graphics, one-of-the-best fight systems...pathetic story. The worst Iīve ever seen. And donīt get me started with Star Ocean 3! I almost cried when i saw the outcome of the plot. A Matrix wannabe!

What s goin on? Express your opinion please.

Yeah, perhaps the industry has gotten a little side-tracked with graphics.  In fact, that's one reason I'm involved in RPG Maker.  It reminds of the SNES times when graphics weren't amazing but the game was.

I agree with you that world maps are dissapearing from games.  It's sad.  Although, I think one reason the industry has gone this way is to appeal to the masses and give a good first impression.  In a trailer or a commercial for a game the creators can't convey an epic storyline so they use good graphics to draw people in.  Very few new games are ever really "fun" to play for me.  Many of them lack the depth that their predecessors had.

Now that I'm done rambling I would like to comend you on your good taste in Videogames.  (Z)
What I mean is Arc The Lad. If you enjoy the PS2 version, then try to pick up the PSX versions (1-3).  In my opinion they were much more fun than the current installment in the series.  :jumpin:

True, story lines are getting worse while graphics take over, the world maps are disappearing for the point and click.
However, we're all still here.  We know what matters, we have the classics, original or otherwise.  We're making games for each other as RPGs become casual player friendly.
We are the ones who are going to get through this phase and remain hardcore RPGers who are willing to spend 100 hours on a deep, involving plot and characters we attach ourselves to and actually give a toss about!

Ah yes, I just love accedently going the wrong way WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too far and having to go AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALl the way back fighting tons of monsters and perhaps dying because of one simple mistake. Theres enough walking in the towns and villages of RPGs... stop complaining.

ugh... kinda narrow minded eh?

Anyway, that's what an RPG is about. for the most part. but this is true, storyline's are getting redundant...

redundant: adj.   A repeative or overuse of something. the boy was repundant with his lies

But .hack had an okay storyline, really messed up one, I only played the first disk because I didn't have the money to get it because I hadn't gotten it in the first place!

I agree with barnsalot on this one. I miss the RPGs like FInal Fantasy 6, Breath of Fire 2 and Lufia. The classics are the best in my opinion.

But that's why we are here no? We create new game based upon classics to bring back the spirit of the classics.

I say: Newer isn't always better

i dont know about you, but i LOVED final fantasy 10's story line, and i am sure im not the only one. not only that but look at the graphics. they are still good even 4 years in the future!

all i am saying, is there are some good rpg's out there. you just gotta look dificulty anymore. EXAMPLES: Paper mario 2, tales of symphonia, final fantasy 10 and a few others.

You said it... a few others. I didnīt play a single bad RPG in PSX...The most games iīve played were in PSX and theyīre all the best. Iīm sincerely concerned that FF7 will NEVER be beaten....

And, the world map thing gives the game a more "Adventure where you travel far away" feeling to the game, which I miss in FF10 (which had a good storyline...not FANTASTIC like FFTactics, FF7, Breath Of Fire 2, 3, Star Ocean, etc...)

Storyline-wise, FFT beats out FF7 anyday. Sadly, a bad translation leaves it so only someone who actually looks it up realizes how mature and involving the plot actually was..

*Head-bobs* Agreed. I always thought of FFT as one of the best plots EVER. But FF7 has the characters, the events, the system...Itīs a whole charismatic package...But, ur right, FFTīs very mature, even more that Front Mission.

RPGs are going downhill in general, although there are a few rare gems floating about.
We love the classics, we know how to make those and so we get RPG Maker and get down to work!
RPGs will become a mixture of old and new elements, and we don't yet know how that'll turn out.  It could already be happening and we haven't realised!
It's no big deal really, just hang tight.

What the hell do you mean with this? Do I need to become angry or confused?
But the point is that the world maps will return, if it's this computer age or the next one they'll return. And with next one I mean other console's off course.

I agree with you, and hope you are right, when you say this is just a bad fase and stuff...

*high five*

i've played a few bad RPGs in PSX.. just can't remember.. =.=" well, maybe a few, like fighting games reinvented into RPGs.. like Ruroni Kenshin and Samurai Showdown/Spirits.. (grose expression)

the best RPG i've played so far is Suikoden and IMO, it's even better than FFT. even in ps2, the storyline of S3 was still a 3 thumbs up type of game.

well, anyway, it's obvious that creative teams in the professional field are getting less creative.. lol..

Crash Bandicoot's my fave, just on the same level as as Ape Escape, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 and Tenchu.. erm.. maybe i put Tenchu on top =3="

Suikoden is easily, easily my 2nd favourite series. Itīs just perfect. But S3 was a little bit dissapointing for the name it carries. (S1 and S2 have world maps, yay!)

I wanted to make my game the same as suikoden, with countless playable characters...but that would be such a poserīs game...
