Title: Startropics Legends
Post by: Osmose on March 13, 2005, 03:39:39 PM
Yup. I'm making a game. Or, at least, attempting to. Don't expect me to finish it or anything like that :P

Anyway, it's also a fangame. Yes, a fangame. Throw paper at me if you want, but it's a fangame. Although based on a game practically no one has heard of, it's still a fangame.

Aaaaaaaaaanywho, SL is basically an RPG version of Startropics and Startropics 2 - Zoda's Revenge. The main character of the game is Mike, who goes to visit his Uncle, a scientist working in the tropic islands, specifically C-Isle. When he finally reaches the island, however, he learns that his uncle has been abducted by ALIENS! Armed with nothing a but a Yo-yo the island natives give him, Mike sets out on a crazy adventure to save his Uncle and defeat the evil invaders from beyond the stars.

For the sake of lazyness, I will be using ripped sprites from Star Tropics and Zoda's Revenge, and so I'd like to thank the wonderful guys at Nintendo for making them for me :P

As a treat, Below is a picture of the title screen along with the title music. One of the reasons I'm making it in RMXP is support of mp3s. I've decided to take the music from Startropics and spifferize it into small mp3s. It won't be TOO big, since it's NES music and only replacing it with more advanced instruments, and even so, you weenies not willing to download such a big file don't deserve to play it.

BAH! CAN'T FIND A DAMN PLACE TO UPLOAD THIS!

Why is the copywright date 1990?
Title:
Post by: Osmose on March 13, 2005, 04:02:43 PM
Because that's when Nintendo made it.

I thought that you'd edit the title to say 2005 because it's when your making your game.

Oh, we can have a thread if we want. I just can't request anything. :P

And RMXP also has the front faxing battle thing, another reason why.

Do you use a patch or something? My version won't let me use MP3s.

Yeah, you need a newer version of rm2k3 to play mp3's. I think version 1.08 is the newest, so I suggest getting that. To update your rm2k3 you need to download a small patch file, I don't know where to get them though.

I'm pretty sure we can *talk* about rmxp, just no links or requests or anything like that. Remember there are "legal" versions of rmxp out there, and as far as anyone knows, the game is going to be made with a legal version.

I remember star tropics! :D
It was one of my favorite games back in the day. Will you be keeping the ATB used in the originals or the DBS?

I look forward to being able to play your new game Moose. Good luck!

Wow.. someone's making a Startropics fangame...

I wonder... are you leaving the code thing in one part (which originally came from the "letter" in the game box.. you had to run water over part of the paper to see the number, and all that, heh) the same, or will there be some way to find it in-game so people who never played the original (or did, but can't remember the number.. and unfortunately the paper's been gone for a LONG time...) can get past that part?

In game. Having it not ingame would be funny, and just, but cruel :P

And I'm going with an RPG type battling system. I mean, why put an ABS? It's not going to be a friggen clone, just an RPG version :P

Wow, how'd this fall all the way down here already? Anyway, here's some screenshots. I've been spending most of my time playing through Startropics 1, both to refresh my memory and to get a feel of how I'm going to do this.

I haven't started on any of the islands yet, because I'm going to have to go through all of Startropics 2 just to rip the improved C-Island sprites for use in the Startropics 1 part of the game, but in the meantime, I've gotten to work on the desert part. I've already got a nifty theme for it done, and you can listen to it at http://tinyurl.com/4shjn

Anyway, here are two screenshots of what I've got done so far. :)

Shot # 2

I edited one of the ending pics from Startropics 1 to get the portrait for battle. IMHO it looks pretty awesome.

The ending is a bit off because only one thing fades, and I'm not even sure if I'm going to use it, but it sounds awesome nonetheless.

I'M NOT DEAD! I finished the desert and struggled for a few days messing with walking scripts and such, and my plan is to simply keep the action elements, like jumping and such, but instead of using weapons like in the game, touching an enemy starts a battle. I'm also contemplating additional party members, and when you switch over to Zoda's Revenge, their stats carry over to other members that come there. Or, I might embelish further upon the times and places and such to make it more RPGish.

But regardless, here's a screenshot of the finished and updated-graphics C-Island.

@ Osmose:

You game looks very.... um.... special^^ Like an old Game Boy game (8-Bit). But then I have a question to ask: What are you using the rmxp for? With 8-Bit you can use the rm2k3. It can use MP3, because you need this function (as you mentioned).

You'r battle sprite looks very funny^^ Is it selfmade?

RMXP also has that scripting thing, which is a necesity for the game - I'km going to have to emulate the old action system and using Ruby Script will allow me to do that, once I start learning more on how to mess with it.

Besides, it has the front view battle system, which is another thing I wanted.

And the battle sprite was edited from one of the ending pics from Startropics 1.

Learn how to script movement of only like, one pixel, without it the StarTropics feel would be eliminated.  And make sure the character uses a yo-yo!
