Title: Mapping Contest Battles

My judging friends didn't have the time to judge maps for us so I've finally decided the take care of it all by myself. I will judge the map battles, and release the results at random times. But I will not release more than two battles a time.
And yes, I obviously have disqualified all off my own maps because I'm judging.
The results of the first two battles will be released tomorrow, and so will 'tournament schedule'.
So watch out for updates!

Battle 1
DragonBlaze's Senguel:
Indeed a very good cave map. A succesfull water effect, a cool picture that makes you think the sun is shining through the cave ceiling. If I were the author of this map I would have put more detailing into a few spots. I also think this is not suppose to be a 20x15 map, it would look better in full size seeing as we all notice it's bigger than 20x15. Other than that very good.


Ace of Spades's Trazunia Castle:
Another very nice map. I've always thought castles and one of the hardest types of maps there is to make. So this one makes me quite impressed. But, just like DB's map it may not be the best shot of the castle.
You also faded the screen very nice.

Battle 1 winner
The two maps were in a very equal level but in the end I decided Ace of Spades's map wins this battle.

 Battle 2
Coasterkrazy's Minstrel Woods:
First thing I notice with this map is that there's a lot of first layer mistakes. And that ladder looks more like stairs. The waterfall looks all right, what I like with this map is that you've somehow managed to make it look like a happy map somehow. A happy map with many colors and that makes me foget some about the first layer mistakes.


Shadowless1's Another Entry:
I like the whole concept of this map, it's a cool brigde idea.. and the chipset is nice too. But the map is way too simply made to be able to beat CK's map.

Battle 3
Moosetroop's Swanky Casino:
I think this Casino looks a bit too big, that's not always something bad but this time it is. In an inner map I can recommend that if you want it to look cool you must always take the screenshot in a place with more ceiling than this, because inner maps shouldn't look like huge fields and this one does. Like I said it makes it look very simple made; red floor, tables at random places, a little wall, just a little ceiling, poker tables at random places and other games also at random places.
One thing you did good, you made the people look like they belong in the casino and that is a +.
Next time make the casino a bit tighter, with more walls and ceilings and I'll guarantee you I'll give a lot more +es.

Neb87's Subway:
I like this map but I've got ceiling criticism for this map as well. In this case you've cut a very nice subway into nine different rooms. And I tknow that's not what you intended to do but that's really how it looks. Could also have more people in it. But other than that this map is pretty good.

Battle 4
Leon_1990's Gaylnor Croms:
Now this is a nice map. The people in it looks very alive and the dragon is really cool. But bridge looks very out of picture in my opinion, you should have made it with two layers instead of just one. And that stone house on the left side of side of the map doesn't look like it belongs up there. Other than this though.. very good!

Artoni's Clearing:
Now this is would be a nice place now wouldn't it? But for a map, a place in a game... No, no, no, no.
First of all that tent looks very out of picture, it's a whole other type of graphic. And mixing graphics in the same maps is like the worst mistake ever. The fireplace looks nice, would look better with people around it.
But the whole map is something you can put together in just a minute. Very simple.

Battle 5
DragonBlaze's Meh:
This is a nice map.  The holy cross in the upper middle looks a bit wierd because of the ceiling that goes up in a strange way, that you could have made right before submitting this map. Otherwise, I really like it. You've put in all the things that had to be there, maybe a painting of something holy wouldn't be so bad.
But even if it's a nice map I can't rate it too high, after all this map isn't the hardest map to make.

Linkizcool's Giggleboo Castle:
Tell me, which one is the gigolo castle? :P
I think this map is wierd, it's unique. The picture you added doesn't really look like clouds if that's what you intended. And is that a flying forest over the castle in the lower left corner? It kind of makes you wonder.
I dunno, this map is special but it's not something that amazes me to be honest. But you should have named it Giggleboo Kingdom or something instead, because I believe there's two castles in this map. But I don't rate names so don't worry too much about it.

Battle 6
Meiscool's Ruins:
All righto. First I'd like to say that I love the waterfalls in the background, it makes the place look like a kickin' water temple.
But there's a "but" to this map as well. I see in a lot of your maps that you add things that maybe could look better if they weren't there. I'll give you an example, the two things on each upper corner.. are those four things pillars or what are they? I think it would have looked better with something else up there, maybe another entrance or something, I dunno. Use your imagination.
When looking at this map there's a lot of things that you can't quite understand what they are or why you've put them in there. I'm not sure if your other ruins had the same kind of things but I do know that map amazed me a lot more than this one. :P

Bluhman's Desert Town:
I want to thank you, cuz you made me realize that those things you used in the upper left corner were stairs and not roof. And that's going to help me making maps with this chipsets.
The roofs on this map was better than mine were, but the houses are too big. I'd like to more smaller houses instead of just two huge ones. And that weapon shop is cool but who's taking care of it? :P
Maybe could have filled up the sand with something as well, but the houses were the most important thing. And that's why this map lost Battle 6.

Battle 7
Desimodontidae's Snow:
Indeed a nice map, a bit square at some places. Looks like a labyrinth, but that's not a bad thing. This might as well be a screenshot of a labyrinth. You what would be cool though? This is a map with no people in it, like a forgotten place no one goes to anymore. It would be nice with a fog effect. And then the thing with the footprints would be something scary. Like someone's been here. Silent Hill style, I like the map, but the lower left corner doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the map. And that looks bad.
Otherwise... good map.

Grandy's Snowy Forest:
First off, that waterfall is as flat as a waterfall can be. I'd like some effect to it, and instead of a thin flood I'd like a not too big river. Because that's not a small waterfall.
The forest is a bit squary and thin I'd describe it. But it works.
The area itself is all right I suppose, I'm not sure how you could make it too much better, it's a nice place. But that waterfall pretty much takes away the feelin' in this map, sadly.

Shadowless1's Another Entry 2:
Im sorry, but this is yet another mmap made by you that is very simple. Sure, it's somewhat cool, but the thing that makes this map cool is the chipset. If that's suppose to be a temple it should be bigger, now it looks like just any strange stone building. This map has no cool feelin' to it, no soul. It's just a very simple attempt of a temple to me, and it isn't too impressive.

Darkflood2's Aria Falls:
OK, to begin with that splash effect you put in where the waterfall hits the water is pathetic. That's how it looks when a six year old bounces in a small pool of water. That bridge should be made of wood, and the huge mountain where the waterfall comes from is very square. It also looks like a strange place for a tombstone to be at. And yeah, like coasterkrazy you also managed to make the ladder looks like stairs.
Everything else is all right.

It wasn't an easy decision, but in the end..

Kijuki_Magazaki's Japanese:
The map looks a bit square on the lower part of the screenshot. The upper part of it is pretty nice though, I like the huge japanese looking house. Looks like one of these places where you can take free Kung Fu lessons. I'd give it a try.
The fact that it's snowing might be considered strange, but I like it. And the trees looks pretty decent too. Nice map.

MrMister's Doom Cafe:
I like how you made it look like a gangs war, but the gangs look a bit strange for that map, don't you think? Don't worry about that though, I won't judge the map by that. The left part of this map is really nice, but the right part of it. It's very empty, and I know roads are probably suppose to be huge in some cases. But if you want your screenshot to look really good I suggest you take it in a place with more buildings.

Neb87's Shuttle Station 0:
It looks like the engine for a doomsday weapon or maybe for a spaceship. The map overall isn't too bad, but the chipset you used is horrible. And the engine just don't belong to that chipset either. Try a better chipset next time.

Coasterkrazy's Buried Castle:
I love this map. The concept of a castle buried underground in the middle of a canyon is exellent. This would be amazing for a dungeon in a game. Somehow it reminds me a bit of Eternal Darkness. I mean, once this castle was alive and standing on the ground just like any other castle. A thousand years later it's buried underground and still exists. It's amazing.
The only thing I didn't quite like is that you placed stones nearly everywhere. And the stones on the top of each tower looks a bit weird. But I barely notice that because the map overall is just so amazing. It would look even better if the castle was more damaged, but I don't think the chipset had those features.

Neb87's Desert Temple:
This is a really nice map. I've never seen this chipset before, it's pretty good. You did a good job to make the sand in that map look real, that makes the map look less flat. But speaking of flat, that mountain or temple entrance.. whatever it is.. looks a bit flat.
But except for that and the red spots located at some random places of the map I've got nothing to criticize.
Very good map!

Meiscool's 666:
Now I think the picture and the tint effect was a mistake. It's a very good map but it seems a bit like it's hiding beyond that effect. But I do see the brook water is just exellent. It has some nice people in it added too. Overall I guess it's a very nice map.

This was probably the most diffitcult decision I've ran into in the contest so far. But in the end I choosed...

Lonewolf's Tall tails:
The idea is original and the people in it looks like they belong there. But to be honest that's the only good things I could find about this map. Anyone could make this map in 5 seconds, that's how simple it is.
Take more time with your map next time.

Enso's Harbor:
Man, do I love the concept of this map? Hell yeah, I do.
This is how a gang war should be. Or maybe it's more like a James Bond scéne. Anyway, it looks like a real dark gangsta harbor place, and that's what I love about this map. It's possible that the big house to the left side of the map would look better if you could see the roof of it. Anyway...

Battle 13

Ace's work of art:
Good map. I've seen many shots from this forest, and it's all over good. I would've used a different screen, but that's beside the point, as I'm here to rate this one screen alone. The light effect is nice, one of the better uses of an overlay I've seen in awhile. The animals are nice as well, as it seems you've got a large ammount of them in there. The trees look odd, and the bridge in the corner looks out of place in this screen, though I'm sure it goes somewhere in the actual map. Good map.

Neb's work of art:
The idea of the map was good, but you didn't bring out the true beast of it. Most graveyards are larger, and not so square. The tint, though going for a nighttime effect, is to strong. A fog overlay would've worked better. Really not much more to say then that.

Battle 14
LHD's Harken Sea:
I like this map. It's very peacefull, and it looks like everyone in the area knows each other. I define this map a standard map, it's not the best but it's not bad at all either. I think it would have looked better with a different chipset. This chipset you used is a bit too square for me. But don't worry, I don't rate the graphics in chipsets like all the other judges do. It is what's inside the map that counts. And what's inside yours is indeed nice.

Bluhman's The Slums:
First off all you should have used a different first layer for the car road. There's too much of that rocky ground, and it just doesn't melt in. Something else that would have been nice is some roof tops on the lower part of the map. Without those it looks more like a huge field with two houses than a real street. The RTP characters wasn't the best choice either, they can't melt into the map any better than the car road.
But if we take a step away from all the bad points of this map I see it has a lot of good points too. The map is very dark, and you figure the streets must be some kind of ghetto place. And you don't see those maps too often. The police car looks a bit out of the picture, the second car is just fine.
This is a map that could have been really good, but in the end i can just define it as 'good'.

Battle 15
Dragonblaze's Random:
I've been spending the whole contest telling people to put more things into their maps... But my god, this map is everything but spacey. Somehow you've manage to crack up five houses, a huge castle wall almost around the whole map, bushes, trees ect. into one tiny little 20x15 map. I'm amazed.
At some places I think you could space it up a bit, like those two bushes that blocks the two small houses.
I can see this is a huge village, and somehow I just can't see how the whole village would look in one screenshot. I don't know how it would work out, but then again you're full of mapping surprises.

Neb87's Devil Liar:
I recommend you that next time you put the main spot of the map in the center of it. Makes it a lot more interesting to look at.
This map isn't to me very interesting though. I've always pictured the devil on a throne in a small throne room on top of a tower.
You've given us a bit too much of he lava field too.

Battle 16
RedFox's Castle of Dreams:
This is an original map, never seen the chipset before. Sadly the temple looks paper flat, but overall the map is built up very nice. And that saves this map.

Linkforce's Gliken Field:
A recommendation would be not to use fields for 20x15  maps, especially not for competitions. I don't know why, it just lowers the feeling and the map looks very boring when you can walk anywhere you want. More mountain-like areas would have been what could have saved this map.
Also, that's not a very good picture effect.
It's not a bad map overall, it's just boring. :P

Shadowless1's Hotel Room:
Wow, you get a kitchen in your hotel room? Guess this hotel has never heard of room service. :P
This is your best map in the contest, Shadow. It's very realistic.
I really don't have much criticism for you, it's an exellent interior map. Though it does look more like a small appartment than a hotel room to me.
Very good job.

Coasterkrazy's Compane:
First off all, you gotta tell me where you got that door in the lower-left corner. This is the first time I see it. oo'
I think the seedling area has a hard time melting in with the map, it would have been better of without it. Another thing I notice is that your detailing seem a bit random. For an example that log on the upper part of the screenshot, it could have been placed in a better position. Same goes for basically all the bushes.
But if you correct these mistakes this would be a pretty nice village.

Battle 18

Because both of these maps are done by the same person, I'm not gonna sugar coat either of them. They are both good looking, a little spacious for my liking, but all around decent IMO. Personally, I like Sumeria more.

RedFox's Assasin Guild:
I like the concept of this map. The building looks more like a friendly cathedral than a guild for assasins. But I guess that's a good cloak. I have a few things I'd like to point out. The cave doesn't really look like it goes behind the building. That's something you could have corrected. How? Use your imagination.
Also the flying island looks a bit thin to carry that much.
But that's all the half-bad things that came to my mind.
Well done.

Neb87's Forest Journey:
It's an OK map. BUT...
1. One spot light picture would have been enough.
2. The forest would look more realistic if it gone behind the mountain.
3. The log in the left part of the middle is unnecessary.

I think this was the only worldmap I ever saw in the contest. That's too bad cuz good world maps usually makes it far, but it's good for you Shadow. This is a nice world map.
I like how you show so much ocean in the screenshot,  that's good. A screenshot of the world should have lots blue ocean in it, in my opinion at least.
I don't like how the edge of the island goes straight down at the left side though. That's not what I would have done.
But overall it's a very good world map.
I'd like it even more if you would have added some clouds to it.

Darkflood2's Aria Forest:
You've got to learn how to make the first-layers not look so square. Yeah, I'm talking about the earthy ground.
It is a nice forest, a bit square overall, but I think the earthy ground kind of messed it up.

Meiscool's ABS map:
Like I told you, Meis. You are awesome at mountain maps.
But.. and I know you're going to disagree with me when I say this, but that tint effect may be a little bit too strong. That's nothing I'm saying to be rude, it's cuz I can barely see what's in it. I know it's suppose to be night-time and it's suppose to be dark but I want to see more of this awesome map.
I've decided to judge what my eyes can catch of this map.
And what I can see, which is actually most of the map, is amazing.
Amazing, that's all I have to say. I'd love it if you would have lowered the tint effect just a little bit.

DragonBlaze's Snow break:
Congrats, DB. You're actually the first one I've seen to have used the ice properly. ^^'
This is absolutely a stunning map as well. This snow map has alot of action in it, a lot of characters in it and a truely beatiful design. And it's thanks to this map I started making my own snowy mountain.
The only citicism I've got is that the waterfalls looks frozen. And I gave you the cure for that.
You could have added some snowflakes raining down on the people, but that doesn't matter at all.
Indeed, good as hell.

The winner of Battle 21 is...
This was the most difficult decision in the contest so far. They are both truely amazing maps and it's sad that one of them has to lose the first round. But Meis, you lost cuz of the little bit too strong tint effect. :P

That door is a little bit too huge for your rather small building. I don't see how this map can make any sense in a game... I mean, what's this place for?
Sorry, but I just don't like this map, it has nothing special in it and is overall not interesting.

Coasterkrazy's Soleil beach:
The charset you used makes this map look very, very bad. The sand castle and the half-naked man in the sunglasses makes it sink to a lower score. (soo sorry if you made them btw... ^^')
Also don't mix up the landscape too much. The reason they added the grass and rocky type of ground into the chipset was so that the map could prepare for a new area made with a different chipset. Not to make wonderland! :p
At least you added a nice shiny picture.

Linkforce's The Social:
1: Carpets are usualy square.
2: Does the smoke from the fire place go into the valves inside the walls and then to the chimney? This is a Midieval chipset, so I don't think so.
3: The two floor thing doesn't work as well as you'd like.
4: Interior are never suppose to be this huge. If it looks like that cuz that it has to in the game, then use something different for mapping contests.

RedFox's Zakaarna Beach:
All right, to begin with; That house just doesn't work. It's basically a small house standing on a bigger one. Un less some giant threw it up there I don't see why you would put a house on another. And still, if the giant story was true, that's a little bit too far-fetched for it to actually get anywhere in a mapping contest.
Next we have the people. What the hell is a dwarf, a queen in a blue outfit, a rich guy and a swan doing on a poor shabby little beach? No one, except for the kids look like they actually belong there.
You have also put a bit too many shops into a small area and switched landscape way too early. Not much sand for a beach (compared to the grass).
I'm speaking like it's the worst map in the contest... Don't worry, there has been worse.

A bit square and the bridge looks more like a giant wall. And I notice that the color on the floor chances in some places, I know it's suppose to look good but it doesn't appeal to me.
This map is OK.

Archem2's Field of Memories:
When you just take a quick look at this map it looks kind of good. But if you take your time and look at it you'll see that you're quite a beginner in map making. I'll tell you why.
The way you're trying to detail this map is a mission failed. A stone right infront of a waterfall, rocks and bushes in the middle of the road. The road is where you're suppose to go, you know.
And on the left side of the waterfall I dunno what you've done, completely different from it's right side. And I'm not a big fan of that.

The fog you used looks OK for this map. What I don't like is that the mountain goes as straight up as a pilar. Mountains usually don't do that.  
You did however, put the tree in the right place.

Neb87's Snow village:
This map has been tree-bombed. 13 trees in one 20x15, that's gotta be some kind of record. :p
And the fence isn't build in a smart way. I haven't seen any fences go like that in the real world.

Archem2's Temple:
Allow me to start off by saying how wrongly you used this chipset. You've got floor panals used as walls at the top, and your bushes are being planted in dirt. If this were a real house or something, the plants thing would seem natural or realistic, but this is an abandoned ruin that probally doesn't have a gardener, so yeah... if flowers can grow there, grass can too.
The water looks good, and the transparent events do too, though you have a sort of elevation issue going on.

CK's Magma Mine:
You also have some issues lining up the elevation on the right side, but everything else is good for the tile part. Your events however, are odd. They should be transparent, and are far to strong. If they were tranparent, it would be a nice map, but... I dunno.

Rob's Evinette Mountain:
Good as usual. I'm gonna focus on what I think you did wrong. The fountain SHOULD be frozen or something. The upper layer tilesets you used for edging look good in most places, but odd in a few others. And lastly, putting more into the trees would've made it look cooler.

Neb's Mansion:
I really like the idea you had going here. If only you prettied it up some with some extra effort. As many people know, I'm good with water, so I like seeing water in maps, but only when it has some sort of special effects with it. Your map is 50% effortless water.

I love both of these maps, it obviously was a hard decision.
I chose Harbor by enso. You don't see too many harbor maps, probably because there's isn't to many of those chipsets.
However, Harbor is a great map. It looks like a Harbor should in mafia movies.
I still think your maps is a bit hidden behind the tint effect Meis, I know it's suppose to look magical, but I would lower it down next time.

He lives on the other side of the earth. Normally, he's sleeping while I'm on.

This constest might get started up again soon, however, it will probally just die. I highly doubt anyone really cares to see the outcome as they did with the first mapping constest.
