Title: Map Contest: Survive The Horror
Post by: Meiscool-2 on January 20, 2007, 08:43:27 PM
THIS CONTEST IS CLOSED. Winner: Daetyrnis

JUDGES: Meiscool  -  Linkizcool  -  MrMister

As promised, here is a chipset that’s not Mac and Blue:

Rules: Using the chipset above, create the best possible map that you can. You can only use the chipset, and NO events, effects, or panoramas, unless told otherwise. Any exceptions will be noted below.
-The Map will be 320 X 240 pixels. THERE IS NO CERTAIN TYPE OF MAP YOU NEED TO MAKE. If I post a forest chipset, you can feel free to make a desert. It’s up to YOU. Only one screenshot per person.
-You cannot, and shouldn’t, use a screenshot that already exists in your game. This means, that to enter the contest, the map you make should’ve been made after I made this post, not something that was already in your game before this post. What you do after the contest with this map, is completely up to you.
-The map can only be changed using RPG Maker 2003. No other image editors, such as paint, Photoshop, etc, are allowed after you have taken the screenshot. If I find out you edited your picture with something other than RPG Maker 2003, you’re out of the contest.
-You may enter as many screenshots as you want, but only THE LAST screenshot you post will be judged, unless you are posting a screenshot as an example to help another person or another purpose other then competing.

Exceptions: UNLIMITED FREEDOM! This means that you can do anything you want. Add overlays, screen tints, sprites, events, weather, and the whole shebang. The only thing you can’t do is edit the chipset, or break one of the above rules.

*Note: This chipset is partially custom made by me, and highly edited. Please contact me if you wish to use it in an event other than this contest, and give credit.*

This contest will go for five days, or until we have enough entries. Anyone can enter the contest, judges as well, though judges can't win prizes.

To start things off, I will post my map. This is an actual screen from my game. Remember, because I'm a judge, my map won't be in the voting. This is just an example of what you can do.

So, begin!

~ Don’t know how to take screenshots? Here’s a tutorial:

In the upper right of your computer, you should notice a key that is called “Print Srcn”. Go into your game and play on the map that you want to take a screenshot of. Make sure your game is in full screen mode, and then press the “Print Srcn” key. Now, don’t do anything other than I tell you to right now. Close the game by pressing F12 and quit. Then, open MS Paint or any other image program. When it’s opened, press the Ctrl key and the V key at the same time. You should see an image of what you wanted to take a screenshot of. Next, make sure the screenshot is 320 x 240 pixels and hit save. Save your picture as a PNG file. After that, everything you need is done and you can host your map!

Post by: aboutasoandthis on January 21, 2007, 04:06:43 AM
Can I use the Blood charasets from "The Way?"

And can I use Move Event to make them a little more transparent?

EDIT:
Scratch that.

jynce, you need to STOP using such large avatars. Slim it down to at least around 150X150.

Yes you can. You can do anything you want as long as it's within RPG Maker 2003's programming.

So, if you want to change your map you can.

-Add the bottom third tiles of the wall that is provided in the chipset.  Your's are lacking and look horrible like that.
-Add more "random" things, like imperfections on the ground and walls.
-Create lighting via tones and/or picture overlays
-That woman has like, no contrast, that looks extremely bad with the rest of the screen.

Righto, the five days have passed. Sorry, I was at my friends house for the past two days, so I havn't been able to keep tabs on this.

I'll wait for MooseTroop's entry, then begin judging. If anyone else wishes to enter, make a map and post it before MooseTroop does or by the end of the day.

Moosetroop11 - 6/10
I don't get it. The objects are too randomly placed, and the door in the top right is blocked by a table. And all the 'goblins' aren't doing anything.

aboutasoandthis - 7/10
It's quite nice, but the placement of some of the objects don't make sense, like the fireplace by the door.

Jynce - 4/10
Somehow you made it cluttered AND bland.
And the blood trail makes no sense.

Daetyrnis - 9/10
Great job of making the place look dilapidated.
Nice use of overlay, even if you did depend on it a little too much.
Genuinely creepy.

Bluhman - 6/10
You sort of had an okay concept here..
I don't really understand why they built hardwood floors and walls down there.
Piss poor overlay and mysterious vines also lose some points.

lucas_irineu - 5/10
The ghosts are from FF6, which don't look that great.. and there's a lot of them.
There's also a ghost behind the counter.. err.. in the counter? Which wouldn't be necessary for a willy-nilly undead operation such as this. The layout of an inn wouldn't be anything like that, either. Something weird in the fireplace, which is fire-hazardly close to those beds.

neb87 - 7/10
An okay effort and concept, but there's so much negative space. You really didn't utilize all of your space.

Krynth - 3/10
Once again, ugly and unrealistic layout for any type of building.
You didn't really attempt anything with this map.

So, in conclusion, I'd like to see more effort out of all of you, and my personal favorite was Daetyrnis.

Post by: Meiscool-2 on January 29, 2007, 03:17:55 AM
Moosetroop11: I think a lot of the objects are to random and don't match in style. However, the randomness of it does have a flow, and it shows how messy those goblins are, so I like it. You're the only one that didn't try to make a ruined-styled map, which I will credit you for, seeing as most of the tiles in the chipset are torn and battered.

aboutasoandthis: Good. You went through the effort to make an overlay, and it fits nicely. You used ideas from my screen to make ripped rugs and ect. In all honesty, it's a very well rounded map. The only thing I don't like about it is the charas. They look out of place to me.

Jynce: True horror... for the eyes.

Daetyrnis: Excellent. Probally the best overlay, blood, and vine uses of all. Real great job with this. I see very little wrong with it. You came in second out of my personal choices.

Bluhman: My personal favorite. You had a great and highly original idea here. The character poses fit, and everything goes with the theme. Even though it's not very realistic that a house would be in a cave, I like originallity. You made it look real, with the pano background, support beams, broken floorboards, and a light overlay that's pointing downward, as though there is a crack in the ground above. The only thing I don't like is the fact that you used a stock overlay rather than a custom one.

lucas_irineu: I see you like to make things very final fantasy styled. I don't much like that though. The rooms are to small, undetailed, and bland. Also, I don't think you made the screen broken and ruined enough to use Ghosts correctly. I do like that you tried to use a light overlay, even though it looks like the place where the light should be at is darker than all the other areas.

neb87: I should quote MrMister here, because that's pretty much what I think. You had a good idea, but you just didn't fill up the space.

Krynth: More randomness would've made this better. Also, like you said, an overlay and some other things would've made this good. I can see a lot of great ideas that could be used to make this screen awesome, but it just has nothing in it other then chairs.

So, my favs go to Bluhman for first, and Daetyrnis for second.
Be afraid though, as it all could be washed away by Linkizcool _veryangry_

Yaay. The idea was that the house was hit by an earthquake a while ago, and so fell down a chasm. Of course, the excavators installed scaffolding in order to prevent the house from falling down while they're in it. Yep. That's the idea.

Post by: Moosetroop11 on January 29, 2007, 09:41:47 PM
XD MrMr, the idea I had was that the witch type person was cooking for the goblins while they all jumped around on the tables below impatiently. And yeah, she's a messy cook :p

I didn't even bother to use an overlay, so I don't see why I should get more than a 6 anyway (so I'm not angling for more marks) I just wanted to justify the map.

Post by: aboutasoandthis on January 29, 2007, 10:44:51 PM
The more I think about it, switching the fireplace with the wall next to it is a good idea.

I need to figure out how to make light rays on UP. I'm getting close.

Overlays don't make a map, man. I didn't deduct anything there.

Agreed. Quite often, overlays kill maps. That's the case with quite a few of my maps.

Title: Reviews
Post by: Linkizcool on January 30, 2007, 12:10:59 AM
MT11: Nice detailing, but the floor looks outta whack. Its usually not a good idea to add random coloured tiles when dealing with wood, etc. Otherwise, good job 8/10

AboutAso: I like the overlays, and the detailing fits the scene. The only thing is the RTP. Otherwise, a good map. 8/10

Jynce: A little too much blood, and not enough of everything else. If you replaced that blood with other objects, it would have been a better map. 7/10

Daeternys/ROTD/watever u wanna be called: I like the use of the vines in the staircase, and it gives a feeling much like AboutAso's. Nice detailing job and overlay. 8/10

Bluhman: This maps unique. I like it, except the overlay is too strong. I had to squint to see the extra detailing. I like the idea, though and the detaling once you do see it is pretty good. 8/10

Lucas: (3rd map u posted) Too much of the map is covered up by roof. Whats there isn't bad, but the extra roof makes it a bit bland. 7/10

Neb: Nice idea, but the roof again takes up a large portion of the map. You could have had a secret room or something in the corner, but I liked the film noir effect. 7.5/10

Krynth: I like the roundness, but its not detailed at all, so im going to have to give this one a six. Good idea, but it really did need the charsets. 6/10

okay...I say the winner is Daetyrnis, with Bluhman, AboutAso and
Mt11 for runner-up.

Good job you guys!
