Title: Alright.
Post by: VahnGrave on January 27, 2007, 02:34:50 AM
Back to the olden days!! Ye olde Vahn is making sprites again..

Well, I'm making this as a sprite of myself for Dominicy's game.

I made this from scratch, and I was wondering what you guys though before I continued.

Edit: Yeah, it's a horribly saved file. Hahaha..

Yeah, I can post the small version of it, and it won't be fucked up!

I'm pretty proud of it, because it's 100% custom.

I just realized I didn't shade the shoes.. Hahaha

Here's the small version.

There's not really any outline, and those practically always make a sprite look better.  Whether it's plain black or coloured is up to you.

There's no effective shading. For example, I think you put some shading on the skin, but the colours are way too close to appear as different.  And on the pants and shirt, the apparent shading contrasts too much and looks more like different parts or splotches than actual shadow.

In RPGMaker, the facing down sprites is supposed to face down.  Not forward, but down.  There's no illusion of depth presented, so the sprite appears to be looking at us.

Well, there's a difference between shadow and light, so I guess the shirt doesn't matter. The colors that aren't black on the shirt are where it folds and the light hits the fold.. I don't know, it's hard to explain. And the pants aren't shaded, they are meant to look like they've been worn in a lot. Have you ever seen a pair of pants that is all basically one color?

For the whole dimension thing, I agree.. But then again, the whole thing is COMPLETELY custom, no template or anything.. I have yet to see a 100% custom set that isn't professionally done look like it's got good dimensions and all that jazz.

Anywho, thanks for the input, man.

That's cool, but I'm not chara sprite expert, haha. And with the whole outline deal(I forgot to say something about it before), I was going for a whole new thing.. I'm kinda experimenting, you know?

Edit: I just looked at that up close.. And the body looks like a standard RPG Maker sprite template.. I don't know if it's just me or what..

Yeah, I can understand the whole experimenting, I just didn't think it was that successful. >_>
And yeah, it may look similar to the RTP sprites because that's the style that I used.

I was just trying to help, after all, he's in the middle of working on it so critique helps the most at this stage.

EDIT: Gah, stupid tags, needing to be capital...

Oh dude, what program were you using to make that, I forgot to ask.. I liked the palette.

And Drenrin, bluntness is kinda what I wanted, haha.

Yeah, it looks almost exactly like RTP, man. That's fuckin' rad.

Thanks for the tips.. I wasn't even thinking about the whole facing down thing. It's been so long since I used RM2k(3) that I totally forgot about that.

I wonder how many people think I look like A.W.K., now that you brought that up. Haha

But on a side note, I'll probably work on the whole sprite deal a little bit during the week.

Since you seem to like the palette, here's how I got it.

1.Double-click a colour
2.Pick a new one.

Also, the shades of black are taken from your sprite.

Well, I know how to make a palette in MSPaint, haha. I'm not THAT stupid. I've just never made a good one in that program. Hell, I've never made too good of a palette anywhere, but the worst were in MS Paint.
