Title: Mapping Contest: Calm Heights
Post by: Meiscool-2 on January 30, 2007, 12:07:58 AM
THIS CONTEST IS CLOSED. Winners - DragonBlaze (Map) and AForgottenLegend (Story)

JUDGES: Meiscool  -  Linkizcool  -  MrMister

As promised, here is a chipset that’s not Mac and Blue:

Rules: Using the chipset above, create the best possible map that you can. You can only use the chipset, and NO events, effects, or panoramas, unless told otherwise. Any exceptions will be noted below.
-The Map will be 320 X 240 pixels (Screenshot size). THERE IS NO CERTAIN TYPE OF MAP YOU NEED TO MAKE. If I post a forest chipset, you can feel free to make a desert. It’s up to YOU. Only one screenshot per person.
-You cannot, and shouldn’t, use a screenshot that already exists in your game. This means, that to enter the contest, the map you make should’ve been made after I made this post, not something that was already in your game before this post. What you do after the contest with this map, is completely up to you.
-The map can only be changed using RPG Maker 2003. No other image editors, such as paint, Photoshop, etc, are allowed after you have taken the screenshot. If I find out you edited your picture with something other than RPG Maker 2003, you’re out of the contest.

Added Rule For This Specific Contest: When posting a screenshot, you are asked to give a story along with the screenshot. I thought that this might be a little fun and creative thing. Judges will judge both the story and the screen separate, so even if your map is horrible, you could still win the story portion. You are not required to give a story, but you have to post a map to give a story. No story giving without maps.

Exceptions: You may do almost anything you wish in this map. Make overlays, screen tints, weather, charasets, panoramas, ect. The only thing you CAN’T do is use a charaset of Humans, Humanoids, Animals, Monsters, or anything that is living other then plants and such.

*Note: This chipset is partially custom made by me, and slightly edited. Please contact me if you wish to use it in an event other then this contest, and give credit.*

This contest will go for five days, or until we have enough entries. Anyone can enter the contest, judges as well, though judges can't win prizes.

To start things off, I will post my map. This is an actual screen from my game. Remember, because I'm a judge, my map and story won't be in the voting. This is just an example of what you can do.

Story: Floating Island named Exsire. Actually the core of the planet earth, years ago powerful mages cast a spell to remove it from the center of the earth to set it free as a floating island. Without it, the earth died, but the core remained a paradise. The mages live on it to this very day.

So, begin!

~ Don’t know how to take screenshots? Here’s a tutorial:

In the upper right of your computer, you should notice a key that is called “Print Srcn”. Go into your game and play on the map that you want to take a screenshot of. Make sure your game is in full screen mode, and then press the “Print Srcn” key. Now, don’t do anything other than I tell you to right now. Close the game by pressing F12 and quit. Then, open MS Paint or any other image program. When it’s opened, press the Ctrl key and the V key at the same time. You should see an image of what you wanted to take a screenshot of. Next, make sure the screenshot is 320 x 240 pixels and hit save. Save your picture as a PNG file. After that, everything you need is done and you can host your map!

You wouldn't happen to have one that's of a valid image size, would you? Because I really don't feel like doing it myself right now... And I'm sure this'll throw a few people (no names are being mentioned...) who don't know how to resize it. I'm not saying I'm in on this (I'd hate to have to drop out due to IRL stuff like in the last one), but if I can get something together before the end, I'll make an entry.

Valid image size? The chipset is 480x256, which is the normal size for chipsets. You should be able to import it fine.

In the event that I'm wrong, here is the direct link: http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c105/Meiscool2/MountainTown.png

Oh my. This is quite peculiar. I double-checked on my part, and the size seems to be fine, but it gives me the invalid image size error... I'll prob'ly fix it soon enough, but I'm finding this to be quite odd...

Where the River Goes

We get a lot of earthquakes up here. Some are big, and some are small. Some are so small, you can walk right threw them and not even notice them. What never really comes is a flood. There are a bunch of rivers that come from the mountains. A lot of times, the water in them touch the shore next to them. Even if it rains, nobody really knows where the water goes.

One time, there was this earthquake and a crash down by Harold's Cliff. A bunch of us went down to see what had happened. Everyone was amazed. There was a hole on the river's floor. Not only that, but there was this stone building stuck in the mountainside where the hole was!

The entire county went to see what was in the hole. Even some of the cityfolk came to see it. They say the bricks in the building didn't match the mountainside. They told everyone it was some kind of marble. Some people say the World's Fair came to town a couple years ago, and this was lost from it. The kids say there's some ancient city down there.

What's wierd is that Harold's Cliff and that river are high up in the mountains. They say they can't swim in the river to look at it, without being carried off, chickens. After it was in the newspaper, the Mayor said he'd bring in someone to look at it? Where does the water go? Who put that building there? What's under the mountain? Is there more of a city to see?

Who knows? Maybe we'll get another earthquake and see.

Title: Dracnos the Dragon Den
Post by: Krynth on January 31, 2007, 08:35:52 AM
Idea: Cherry blossom trees (when the leaves fall they're suppose to look like fire is raining) supposed to be in place of the four pillars below. That and probably cant tell but its suppose to be shaped sorta like a dragon's head...the two piller islands above are suppose to be the end of the horns... which connect to the two pillers at the side of the building (head)

http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/92/calmheightsyn1.png

(need to think of something for a story...)

Story: Spring softens the land, the green returns to the valleys and then to the mountains...

Then an unnatural coldness runs through your veins as the sky goes black...high above fire rains down upon the land and covers you...the heavens turn red as the season of dragons grow near...

Soon they'll come when evening befalls the land and out from the fortress high above these serpents will pour...

Edit: Fixed and may be able to do more if I find the right resources...

--The Sky Fortress--

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Once upon a time, there lived a great man.
Admiral Cole was his name.
He fought in a war, many years it would span.
But Admiral thought of it simply a game.

In order to fight his enemies great,
he built himself a fortress, high in the sky,
made of stones of compressed sand.
some might have said that the fortress could fly,

but even this fortress was bound to the ground.

With columns many and fine cliffs attached,
the fortress was an island high in the air.
the height of the fortress even matched
the height of the mountain "Avante Al Feur".

But it was not long until enemies came.
The legion came in a furiously fast attack.
It was the ogres, most looked the same.
But one stood out, ogrun shogun Jack.

Shogun jack stood wide and tall.
The very earth shook when he took a stomp.
And seeing how easily the fortress would fall,
He jumped in the air and made a loud THWOMP.

Within seconds, the stone leviathan tilted,
toppled and melted, down to the earth.
Even quicker, indeed, was the fortresses death,
Than even it's seventeen year-long birth.

And now, my friends, now you know
of the sky fortress, with stones of sand.
And remember, when fighting a sturdy foe...

Build a sturdy fortress - Upon sturdy land.

Hmmm, it got bashizzled when I shrunk it down to 320 by 240, oh well.

I call it :  Sanctuary

Story  :

A kingdom abandoned by it's Ruler in its greatest moment of need.

Enemies from a far off Kingdom were invading this peaceful kingdom tirelessly.  Every day brought about new waves upon waves of viscious attacks from the unyielding invader.

Left to fend for the country was the King's staff of advisors, and the advisor with the most power, the Administrator of Law, was at their head.

To unite the kingdom the administrator came up with a plan.  A new haven was created, a place that only the advisors and a select few trusted citizens could find.  A place high in the mountains, with a path frought with danger and confusion.

At the top of a hidden mountain sits a stone building, inside this building plans are made for how to save a fragmented country. This building the pinacle of secrecy and solitude, allowing for plans to be made away from the prying eyes of the enemy. This haven stands tall, and stands proud, a monument to the perserverence of a country in its time of need.  This place is known simply as...

Sanctuary..

^  That should look familiar to some of y'all. I really badly wanted to use people on this one, and do an inside, i was inspired by a comment made in Sanctuary a while back.

Well, here goes...

[GLOW]The Pond[/GLOW]

If you were to walk by and happen to see a clearing in the woods, would you investigate?  Would your curiosity get the best of you?

(Click here for a song to go with it (http://www.marchingbandmusic.de/mp3s/update_05/Wishing%20You%20Were%20Somehow.mp3))

During the civil war, on a dark foggy day, a wounded soilder was seperated from his batallion.  Looking for somewhere to rest, he spotted a clearing.  In this clearing was a beautiful pond with its sparkling waters and shallow edges, he decieded this would be the best place to sit and rest.  While looking upon the smooth waters edge, he noticed a small pebble.  The pebble looked very ordinary, so he threw it into the pond.  As it skipped atop the water, he saw a gold colored speck on the pebble.  As the small pebble sank, he must of realized he found gold because he chased after it.  (Click here for this scene (http://www.marchingbandmusic.de/mp3s/update_07/King%20Kong%20Finale.mp3))
Where the water became deeper, he dove in after it.  Not knowing where it was or how deep it had gone, he dove father and farther until finally seeing it.  He grabbed it and swam to shore.  As he was leaving the water, he felt something wrapping itself around his leg.  He pulled and tugged, but it wouldn't let go.  He wrestled and struggled as the thing pulled him under.  You could see air bubbles coming up from where he was, and all the sudden, the bubbles disappeared and the soilder was never seen again.
(Click here for the song for this part (http://www.marchingbandmusic.de/mp3s/update_07/King%20Kong%20Opener.mp3)
One year later, a engaged couple came upon the lake.   Thinking this would be a great place for a picinic, they settled down on a blanket and began to eat thier lunch.  In the middle of a juicy apple, the man noticed a small goldish colored pebble.  The cleary suddenly became foggy and dark, but not noticing this he tol his Fiance about the pebble, they went over to grab it.  As the woman grabbed it, she noticed that her Fiance was not beside her.  As she went to look behind her, her Fiance hit her in the head killing her.  The man then grabbed the pebble never to be seen again.

After 50 more years, three bodies were found by this pond, each of them, the wounded soilder, the engaged couple, had a golden pebble in thier hands.  When tested, these pebbles were not in fact gold, but pyrite.  Why did these three die over Fool's Gold?  We may never know.

But if you were to go to this pond, on a foggy and dark day, you will see a wounded soilder sitting along the pond's edge resting, and an engaged couple eating thier picnic.  But remember to stay away from the goldish colored pebble.
Now I will ask again, If you were to walk by and happen to see a clearing in the woods, would you investigate?

The City of Ancient Civilizations
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
*Story*
An ancient unknown civilization once built a city deep in the mountains of the south.  This civilization hidden from any outside influence of other cultures, built a thriving city.  Than the civilization abandoned there home for reasons unknown. The reason for this is still being studied to this day, but the city remained.

For thousands of years this city was deserted, until miners from the south came through to mine in near by caves by the city.  After the miners left, the city was decaying, it was turning into ruins.  The minors where one of the other reasons this happened.  They where ruthless and cared nothing of this city.  The city was thought to be forgotten and lost.

Until the city was rediscovered and rebuilt with more modern materials.  This was done by hikers, backpackers, and rangers to create a place that hikers and backpackers could rest on there journeys.  The city also became a ranger station which provided medical help and also helped lost travelers.  This service runed for many years until the Great War broke out.

In the Great War this city was used to stop troops from invading into there major cities.  Many battles would be taken place here and many victories for who ever controlled the city.  This upon any other factor caused the complete destruction of this once great city.

The rift

The precursors, with their advanced technology, created our world. Everything had a specific balance. However, as a mysterious force known as the plague entered our world, the balance set up by the precursors was destroyed. In areas such as this, the laws of physics don't apply, and even time itself is bent. Treasures and creaturs long lost are brought back again. The rifts are always changing and unstable, and make advenuring there very dangerous, even to the most fearsome warriors.

Alright. Provided I have school tomorrow, I'll close this when I get home and begin the judging then, now that we have enough entries.

If anyone else wants to enter, do it now. Remember, this is based on two parts, screen and story. So, if you're bad at screens and good at stories, you can still post a bad map and maybe win the story part:p

AboutAso: Nive map, This tint was a little strong though. I like what you did with this. 9/10
story was good, I liked it too, it fit with the map. 9.5/10

Krynth: I liked this one, but some of the overlays looked choppy soomed up. Nice though. The backround wasn't RTP (yay) and the temple looks a bit average. 9/10 Story was short and kinda random... 6/10 Meis says this one breaks the rules, so I don't know what to do.

Bluhman: I like the map, but the cloud in the middle of it looks like a blob, and the bottom pillar looks a bit out of proportion. However, its really nicely detailed, and all. Good job. 9.5/10

The story was definelty the best written one, so 10/10

Glitch: RTP backround, and the outside of the mountain looks a bit weird, but the inside looks really good. Good job. 8.5/10
Story was also good, 9/10

A Forgotten Legend: First of all, I liked this story the most. 10/10. The map, was really simple however. I like the tint, but its lacking much of the chip that was available to you. I know it goes with the story 6/10.

Neb: I dont know if those buildinds are legal, will wait for Meis on this one.

DragonBlaze: Nice map. No real complaints, good job. 9.5/10, story was so-so 8.9/10.

Winners decided as soon as meis can clear up some of that stuff.

Post by: Meiscool-2 on February 09, 2007, 02:05:33 AM
Neb didn't do anything against the rules, so go ahead and rate him. Also, Krynth's map WAS above the 320X240 pixel limit, but he fixed it.

Aboutasoandthis: Map - In my personal opinion, this would've won were it not for being so dark. I like the ruins under water look, but it was just to strong of a tint/overlay buddy.
Story: Good work. It had me drawn in for the greatest part. Would've been nice if it had more of a conclusion than a cliff hanger. Of them all, I personally think that your map goes the best with your story.

Krynth:  Map - Average map with some good backgrounds and overlays. I would've liked it a lot more had you not made it so mirrored, but it looks good as it is. Though the map itself is average looking, you blended it well with events, backgrounds, and pictures. Definately your best map yet :)
Story - It suits the map, but it sounds rushed.

Bluhman: Map - The only thing I don't like about the map is the pixelated cloud. Everything else is fine.
Story - My personal winner for story. It was fun to read, sounded like a parable from a children's book, and had a great ending. Plus, it had some rhymes. Great job. Your originality constantly amazes me.

Glitch: It looks to me like you took a large map and resized it to fit 320X240. I hope you know that goes against my rules of using another program to edit your picture.
Map - Though things don't line up due to the resizing, its still a good map. You used tiles in ways I havn't seen before. You made a nice little mountain with a cool castle and waterfall. Thing I didn't like was the RTP clouds.
Story - Haha, charas inspired anyone? As always, it's great to read parodies (sp?) about things that have happened to this website. Goodjob:p

A Forgotten Legend: Map - Very bland. Doesn't look like much time was put into this.
Story -  Insane. Just great. Made up of different stories tied so well together. I love stories where people die because of greed while in fact they were fighting over something worthless. You hit a soft spot on my story liking. You pretty much tied Bluhman, but because Bluhman's map ties in with his story more than yours, he wins the story part.

Neb: Map - Best use of an overlay I've ever seen from you. As usual, it seems you like to use army stuff in your pictures. However, I really don't think that they match in style or purpose. You've got a fantasy map with real life tech. I personally don't think that goods well together. The map itself is great, but because of the objects, I don't like it a whole lot.
Story -  The story was great. It didn't flow as well as the others though. Part of this was because of the repeatitive use of words and noticable typos here and there. Another best entry so far by you:D

DragonBlaze: Map - Personal favorite of the mapping. I'm partical to floating islands, so you got points for that too. It was very simple, yet flowed well and was detailed in all the right areas. The only thing I'm unhappy with is the miss use of a lot of the mountain side tiles. Many of them don't line up as they should.
Story - Goes with the screen alright. However, I think it was to short to stand up to some of the larger stories that these guys wrote, so you don't win this one.

lucas_irineu: Map - You're right. This is the worst of them all. No effort what so ever was put into this. However, the next chipset should be easier to work with, so you'll do better on contest # 5.

So far, it looks like DB is leading the mapping with Bluhman and AForgottenLegend tied for best story. But... will MrMister agree with this? Or, will be **** you all in the *** and give the win to someone else? Await his review with much tension, please >:

I didn't think about it like that, I thought you just couldn't use paint or whatever to actually touch up your map, well now I know.

As far as the clouds go... well that was a crime of laziness on my part. I originally had a ocean horizon type picture for the background but it got kinda weird when placed in game. Oh well.

aboutasoandthis - 7
I like the underwaterness. looks creepy.

Krynth - 5
Why are there pillars? They aren't supporting anything. I dunno. I don't like it.

Bluhman - 7
Neat look. Italianey.

Glitch - 7
If you had used a better panorama it would be better. The water is mysteriously coming from the peak of the mountain.. weird.

A Forgotten Legend - 3
So flat.. and just flowers.

neb87 - 5
Nice different look, but you could have added some more stuff to fill that space.

Dragonblaze - 8
Some conflicting tiles.. I like it though. One of the better maps as far as depicting height goes.

lucas_irineau - 2
nothing

Yeah, I know it's hard, but rate the stories too. We need a tie breaker between Bluhman and AFL.

Post by: Krynth on February 09, 2007, 06:05:13 AM
Overlay- It automatically made the b/g transperent (idk how to make it where it isnt) so I had to use tint to fix that, which caused the clouds to look weird and all...

Mirrored- Sorry its a bad habit...I also didnt have enough room to add the rest of what I had planned...

Story- Rushed? Yea I guess so but I really wasnt sure what to do for the story either so I tried my best to work it into the map somehow...that it may have been my style that caused it look rushed...

Pillers- Well the 4 below are suppose to be cherry blossom trees which is suppose to help explain the story better as to why its raining fire (symbolism? idk the leaves look like fire when falling from the sky)

As for all of them they were suppose to be linked by vines to the main fortress....

Truly terrifying. Well done.

Bluhman - 7/10
Not that interesting, but it had a nice moral. I think.

This contest is now closed.

I guess this makes DragonBlaze the winner of the mapping with AForgotten Legend winning the story portion. Great job both of you, and great job to all the entries. Personally, I think that this contest brought out the best of all your abilities.

The next contest will be mac and blue as requested. Now to just find the chipset....

Maybe you should just try harder at not being a failiure at life. The rest will come naturally.

Maps are easier when you turn down the suck.

DISCLAIMER:j/k, j/k...I jest.....nothing personal

A mufuka should have an XP contest....
I am compelled to enter the next one if its not suckalotofazz chips.
I even re installed 2K3, waiting for a contest Im stoked for.

Excellent, because I don't have a certain chipset I was planning on using. I'll let you deside.

Only catch is it has to be Mac and Blue. :D

meiscool, why dont you make a world map contest sometime?

I'm world map bias. I hate them and think they shouldn't be in games. Also, world map screens almost always look horrible, because you can't put a whole lot of realistic detail in them.

Ive never used a mac and blue set....Im not one to decide.....

Man......A spriting contest would bee cool beans too...
Like.....A body template, and some specifics (Gotta be femal, or a certain race, or class or something.....Or a series of sprites..not spritesets....just single sprite images....or poses....something of the like) Id be all over that dogpile

yes, i dont like world maps that much too, because they have no details, but it would be nicer than just write a history. But a sprite contest would be really nice.

Ah, I really would've loved to do the story part of this, but I'm just not up for mapping lately. I feel like I scrap everything I do.

Someone should start a writing contest of some sort, though. Prose, poetry, you name it. I do it. Writing is a huge hobby of mine, but I never really got into it until this year when my English teacher told me I had a lot of talent and should continue to write.

So, yeah, good job to everyone on this. It was definitely one of the most interesting contests I've seen on Charas because of the story part.

You're just in luck buddy, because I just started a short story contest. You make a story based on a picture I show you. I think this will be good for the more creative people of charas, and judging by your music, you're a pretty creative guy:p
