Title: 'Remake Your Original Game' contest
Post by: Dominicy on June 27, 2008, 12:43:56 AM
The idea is that you're going to come up with a remake of your very first game, like the title implies.  It's a pretty simple concept, so there's not too much else to state that's not already obvious.

The rules are:

1. This must be your very first game.  Whether or not it is your very first game to test out RPGmaker, or it's your first SERIOUS game is up to you.
2. The game can be no more than 5 hours long, so you might want to leave out the less important details of the plot and so on.
3. It MUST be a remake of your original game, not 'inspired by' your original game or anything like that.  There's no way to really enforce this rule, however, so it will be up to you to be honest.
4. You have the option play-test your own game before giving it to me to play.  I'd rather not have to test the game while I review.  Whether or not you actually do this is up to you, but chances are if you don't it will show, and any problems caused by it will cause a drop in gameplay score.
5. Not really a rule, more like a side note.  I am one of the judges, and I'll do my best in ensuring that I find at least one other cooperative, non-biased opinion to be a backup judge.
6. The deadline has not yet been decided, but one week after the games must be submitted, complete or otherwise, or they are disqualified, the judging will begin.  There may be exceptions to this rule.

The judging categories are:

1. Graphics
2. Sound
3. Gameplay
4. Story
5. Overall (Not based on other scores)

Any graphics you can find can be used, as long as you have permission to use them, same goes for music.  Last, but not least, I will update the rules and categories when necessary.

My first game is... lost forever. So's my second game.

I'd prefer to have someone I know a bit better be a judge, since I'll know who's really honest and good at reviewing things and who's not that way.  No offense.

Oh. I suggested judging because I only JUST posted my first game, so I wouldn't really be able to remake it, im still making it. It's coming out really good though, but I'll watch this contest with interest anyway.

Mind if I judge?

Glad you offered, actually.  If no one else shows up to judge, you win by default ;P

Well, to be honest, I'm sure I would've lost anyway. So I'd like to judge. :/

I can't even remember what my first game was.

Edit:
Okey, I'm remaking this (it's my first serious game.... I think) :
Warning! Contains bad english and some noobishness from me.

Yeah, so wish me good luck.

Sidenote: The game was never completet so is it okey if I make up an ending?

I'll give it a shot. At the very least, I can go back and revamp the music I wrote for it.

I would, but my first game was "Dragon Scroll" and I had no idea on the plot at all ], and the first serious one was planned to be so massive I'd kill myself.

Ed: If no one else signs up for judging both of you will be judges by default

Red: If the plot was at least partially complete, then you're fine, same goes for everyone.

Zeek: Um, ok? XD

Sniffs: I love you too :p

Everyone who's entering the contest: Good luck ;P

Sorry, I just feel epic typing like that XD

Well this looks cool, but I can't even remember my first serious game... unless it was my first game ever, Swordplay (made in GM so I don't think that would work), or what I THINK was my first attempted RM2k3 game, Castlevania: Shadow of Despair. Okay so maybe I do remember it, but I'd probably just run into the exact same problems as I did back then, so I'm not even gonna bother entering. I'm sorry, I have too much other stuff I'd rather do.

Hehe, it looks like whether you're 10 or 20, you learn a lot about the game making forum scene by spending a few months on Charas.

I'll run for the judge election though. I think I'm usually a pretty fair judge.

The poll's been reset to zero, and voting is officially beginning.  If you can manage to remake Swordplay for RM, then sure it's allowed.  You know what?  As long as the mods don't have a problem with it (I can't imagine a reason they would) the contest now officially supports Game Maker.

In other news, however, yeah, you can learn alot about game making on Charas.  I personally think I learned more last night when I was looking for a Game Maker keygen last night and I ended up with a virus that almost (Well, that's debatable, actually) killed my computer.  As it turned out, the virus didn't disable my virus protection and my computer didn't activate a back-up one or anything like that, the virus WAS Vista Anti-Virus.  I gotta say, when my dad and I figured that out, I was impressed XD  Plus I learned two things.  One: Stay far away from Game Maker keygens O_O, and two: 'SUPER P0RN!!!' icons installed by viruses look almost like a chick licking an abstract painting O.o

Both my first Project were made on RPG Maker on the PSX and were very short.
1- Baros and Dereck : Although it was a serious game, it was very random and weird. It just made no sense. But it was my first game, I was quite young and I didn't have that much imagination.
2- Resident Evil : It was quite good... for a game made by me. But it had no real storyline, you just arrived out of nowhere into a mansion full of zombies and likes. And there were merchants in it...

The third and last game I completed was my first on RPG Maker 2000 and was even shorter.
Final Fantasy , Dragon Elements : The shortest game, could be complete in less than an hour... and didn't really have anything to do with FF series. But my young mind thought it would sound great!

Re-making my first game was a thing I once wanted to do though, ut I used pre-made maps ( RPG MAker on PSX ) for mosts of the location, if not all, and I'm not very good a map making... but I don't know, maybe I'll give it a try. I'll just have to remeber the game...

CoolZidane: That sucks D:  Feel free to change your mind, though.

Felix-0: Remake your first game, not release your first game XD  Remake it to see how much you've learned and how much better you've gotten. ;P

Cerebus: I started off using RPGmaker 2.  Then I went to RPGmaker 1.  Then I read a few guides to making games.  They spoke about 2000, I looked into it, and that's how I ended up here :D

Either way, Tweak the story a bit, remake the characters (add a few new characters.  Not a completely new cast, ofcourse, but a few new characters will work ;P).  Play around with the idea of updating the story and see what you get.

Hmm. This would probably give me something to do, since my current project has been put on hold (my coder is in Florida)... My first project was just... Ugh, no. Something I was working on at the same as my first project was "Stick Figure Killing Arena", which is something I really donīt feel like returning to. My third project is my current project, so, yeah. I wonīt even get into the plans for my fourth project.

I am too lazy to make a topic, so:

Who wants their fan character in a fighting game?

Dude, please don't use a contest thread to advertise.  Not cool. ;P

Either way, you guys work on your games, do as you like with them, just make sure that you stay in the subject of remaking a game.  When ever any one finishes their game post a link here for any one interested, and contact me and send me the link, in case I miss it.  MSN, E-mail or PM, any of the three work as far as I'm concerned.  I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys make, so make it something worth waiting for, and have fun.

But your second project isn't your original project because the original project is your first project and your second project isn't your first project and this contest is for your original project and your second project isn't your original project since your original project is your first project.
