Title: Charasian Composition Contest
Post by: A Forgotten Legend on December 13, 2008, 07:58:38 PM
Charasian Composition Contest

For this contest you may enter up to (2) compositions to be judged by (5) judges.    The compositions must be anywhere from one minute in length to 7 minutes.  No more, no less.  The entry must be in Mp3 form.  If you cannot change it, I will for you.  The instrumentation can be traditional or electronic.  It does not matter.  If possible, submit a score of your work.  Pieces cannot loop.  The 2nd will be based off a given theme. You do NOT have to enter two songs.

Other Details:

-   The song must have a theme
-   Songs may have voices, but are limited to Oo, oh, ah, etc.
-   The 1st song can be of any theme
-   Both songs may be of any style
-   Unless using electronic sounds, the instrument parts should be playable.
-       You may use recording equipment and real instruments as well as midi ones.

The 2nd song however will have to follow this theme:

The Haunted Mansion

The mansion stood like a tower of old memories.  No one lived there anymore.  It was a popular place to be on Halloween.

The 2nd piece will be judged the same as the 1st, the exception being that there is an added category of Theme which will ask the judge if the entry matches the given theme.  It will be worth 5 points making the point total 50 points.  For the 2nd song, a small paragraph should be included to let the judge know what’s going on as they listen.  You do not have to given specific times. (Ex. At 4:30 they are running for their life).  You can create any kind of background story for the mansion, as long as the haunted mansion theme is used.

This means there is a possibility for two winners.

Slamming my guitar against the mic, yes or no? =\
I donno, if I enter it will be just as a joke as I have no real musical skills.

I'll attempt to participate.

What's the reasoning behind the "no voices" rule? I don't get why they shouldn't be allowed.

Not sure I agree with the length thing, either. Longer things get more points, but are they necessarily going to be better than a high-quality shorter composition?

What about like
1 and 7 = 1 point
2 and 6 = 2 points
3 and 5 = 3 ""
4 and 4 = 4 ""
Makes no sense but looks prettier. :P

I'm with Dragonium... What about voices with no words, like recording voices over and over again to make a choir? That can sound coooooool.

Hm, I also agree that longer songs shouldn't be rewarded more points.

...

I originally wasn't even going to allow the use of a microphone, but I might as well do this now,

Voices are allowed AS LONG AS no actual words are used.  Like Ah, or Ooo, or Oh are fine.

The length thing originally just 7 points if you were in the limit, so i may go back to that.

The reasoning was so that there wouldn't be any kind of bonus for have words to the song while others don't.  If that makes sense.  (Its not a poetry contest, but a composition contest kind of thing? >.<)

EDIT:

Still need three more people to judge.

So... why can't you allow words but just not award points for them? O.o

I'm trying to stick to what my original idea for was as much as possible now.  (The original write didn't allow for any real instruments, etc, and was suppose to be all electronic.  I only pushed that out farther to get a few more people to do it.)

So I'm not going to change any more of the rules. =/  Sorry.  (Unless something extreme happens and I HAVE to.)

I'm almost done, just need to correct a few notes (the hardest part for me) but there are some things that I need to know:
1-It was not in my plan, but my midi loops >_<
Should I leave it like it is?
2-About the mp3 converter
I post the song here and you convert it to mp3?
Title: Re: Charasian Composition Contest
Post by: Hell Angel on December 17, 2008, 11:51:30 AM
1- According to the first post, you should change your song. Adding a simple ending counts, but simple doesn't win contests. =P

2- He'll convert it to MP3, yeah. I'm not sure how he'll be doing that, or whether or not it will be too different from the original.

I have the soundfont program someone directed me to.  It will make the midi sound more like real instruments, but other than that, all the notes/rhythms will be the same.  Thanks for answering their question Hell Angel.

Thanks helping judge, fortet.

This midi is a really weird one, because I composed it inside a dream! I'm sorry but I really don't know if the midi was really made by me or it existed before.  If it's not mine please let me know it so I'll try to compose another one on time. Thank you.
---------------------EDIT---------------
                   (Themed Song)

2nd Song's Length: 1 min 58 sec
Name of 2nd song: Ghostly presence
Song Storyline:Imagine a dark mansion always engulfed by a strange mist that sometimes shows strange shapes and shadows.Imagine the wind, maybe, moving the doors and the windows, an old collection of toys and puppets that if you look at them, you will realise their smiles are as terrible as the feeling of being observed by something. And a ghostly presence that secretly guides the travelers to despair and fear, just to drain their souls as they forever become part of the curse.

I'm not going to be able to do it. Came at a bad time, me being in Mexico over the break, and all. I'm up for it if you ever try it again, maybe at a more convenient time.

I finished My second one. The Haunted Mansion.

So There's a hint of creepy but Its pretty Chilled

Again I'm linking to my Newgrounds account, Theres no way I can make a 5 1/2 minute Mp3 128KB

LINK: http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/201993 (http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/201993)

Song 2:
Length: 5:26
Title: Klaws
Theme Storyline: As you approach the house an eerie chill overcomes you. You open the door as the piano starts playing random notes on its own accord. Looking inside at the lobby filled with old furniture. A presence watches over you as you enter further, and the angels of light can no longer protect you... The mansion is a trap built to test your faith and resolve as you try to solve the mystery of the death of the priest who's demented body is seen in small instances Screaming, flailing, dying in different parts of the house. Only you who have shed the protection of god can put the holy soul to rest, and save yourself, or take the priests place in a never ending labyrinth of pain and horror.

I think that explains it pretty well. The song isn't completely submissive. Giving power to the 'hero' who isn't completely afraid and helpless but does give a sense of panic at some points.

Depends if people are actually truly interested.  If so, then yes, if not, then no.  As you can see, this didn't turn out so well.
