Title: Sai'Kar's Sprites and Stuff
Post by: SaiKar on March 19, 2009, 06:25:57 PM
For some reason I feel compelled to start my own sprite gallery. So, okay.

Please note that everything in this thread is OPEN DOMAIN. You can use this stuff in your own games or edit it however you choose. I'd prefer if you gave credit to me (SaiKar) if you use it in some project, but honestly I'm not that uptight on that sort of thing.

For the battlecharacters, I'm reducing them to a single conglomerate image to make the post scroll less fiendishly. I included a little white space so that it should be easy to put them back into their original files. If you are having trouble with this, go to http://charas-project.net/resources.php , search for SaiKar, and click on the Battlecharas link to find the original files.

I'll be occasionally adding to this thread as I create/find new stuff.

SAI'KAR

The character of my namesake, Sai'Kar is a "Mithuk Solom", which translates roughly to "Divine Warrior" in our language. She is one of the strongest members of the micron race, a civilization different than humans that has been in hibernation for thousands of years while a magic spell to transform them into beings of pure energy has brewed. She abandons that fate to join the heroes in saving the world.

Sai's battle character was the first one I ever created and I'm still happy with how it turned out. I'd probably shade things considerably differently now, but I don't really have many actual complaints.

Sai was going to be in her own game at one point, so she ended up with a few "extra" graphics like the swimsuit swimming things and the darker uniform with short hair. Never went anywhere though.

RMXP version YES!

JASON

Jason is the main character of the CoD games. He is a fire caster and uses "empathy" (a form of psychic powers) to reshape the battlefield. His weapon is a wooden club, similar to a wand, that contains a link to the Empathi Field, a cosmic energy nexus that powers psychic abilities.

This was the first character that I created full charaset sprites for. Ultimately, some of them were too darn annoying, like that dying pose. But man does that fire he's holding animate nicely.

Aww, look how cute he and Erika look there.

BILL

Based on the RTP hero Alex, of course. Bill in my vision is an aggressive swordsman with a small amount of fire magic.

I gave Bill a very aggressive swordsman's stance that takes advantage of his strength to swing the blade overhead for a nasty stroke. Bill also has some interesting jumping and stabbing motinos that I never really did a whole lot with.

ERIKA

Undoubtedly the most powerful character in CoD2, Erika combines wind magic with fierce sworsmanship in a style of combat that proves deadly in almost all circumstances. By using the power of the wind masterfully to help augment her own muscle movement, she can run circles around an opponent, dodge anything short of the fastest bullets, and even float slowly in any direction through the air. She is historically the fastest character in the entire CoD universe.

If memory serves, I created the battle character first, then Ruler of the Dark made a character set out of it for me along with that swimming pose, and I went from there. By now I can make my own character sets (they're far easier than I feared) but I am still very grateful for the help.

Erika's sword stance is based off of Chrono's from Chrono Triggger. She holds her blade across her body in what appears very agressive but actually lets her defend herself well.

Her wind floating animation is by far and large my favorite pose, ever. Actually, a lot of Erika's poses look really good. I think hers came out the best.

Erika was one of the first to be translated into RMXP style. I only made that sprite last weekend so she doesn't have a full character yet.

MATT

Matt is an ethical scientist, who believes both in the pursuit of knowledge and the safety of the planet. He knows earth magic. He's also Bill's brother.

The original Matt sprite was the black-skinned RTP thief hero, chosen because the goggles gave sort of a sense of being some sort of scientist. But since Matt (and Bill, and actually quite a few others) are based on real people, real-life Matt was never very happy about being portrayed as a black character. I made this battlecharacter as a request and Matt wanted to use it to portray his character. I didn't much like this because I felt this sprite was too "rugged" and totally destroyed the scientist part of the character, but I went along with it and made some poses anyway. This story has a very odd ending that I actually visited Long Island last week, met with the real Matt, and created the RMXP sprite standing there next to Erika as a compromise. I should probably go back and change all the original stuff to fit that new sprite, but man, that's such a pain!

The green weapon Matt is holding is a laser sword, which is pretty much a lightsaber from Star Wars. I gave him what I thought was a standard Jedi pose; blade straight upright next to the body, ready to intercept incoming lasers or whatnot.

AWALDOCK

CoD2's anti-hero, Awaldock is a heavily armed swordsman with masters over the ice element. His "Ice Cage" technique is feared far and wide.

As he was supposed to be a trained military man, I gave Awaldock a more typical sword pose that looks pretty sweet from either the front or the side. When you line Bill, Erika, and Awaldock up in a row they each hold their blades in a very distinct way and I think that's sorta nifty.

Awal's battlecharacter is probably my most popular one, especially after I added the body armor to the generator as a resource. Apparently nobody figured out that it's just an edit of the armored male trooper with the front of the armor changed to a breastplate. Hah!

Though it barely shows up in the sprite (it's much larger in the artwork), the symbol on Awaldock's chest is a combination of the letters "T" and "Y." TY stands for "thank you." When the first CoD game was starting up a guy named Awaldock drew some very sweet concept drawings for many of the heroes. He made it into CoD2 as a main character because of this. Support your game creators, people; we're an appreciative lot!

CAMEOS

I did these without asking permission of the character's creator, mostly because I can.

Myrin is Midnight's character. When she started doing Sai artwork, I responded by doing a Myrin bchar set, and the rest is history. She was an important character in my Outpost project as an assistant to the player.

I actually had full character sets for the entire first row of Myrins and some of the second. Unfortunately, the loss of my computer last summer destroyed a huge amount of these poses, including all of the Myrins and several CoD character sets. Alas fallen ones, ye are remembered. Since I have the proto-sprites here I could conceptually recreate the entire character sets again, but Outpost is long dead and I'm too lazy.

REQUESTED CHARACTERS

From back when I did requests often. I was given a characterset (that I did not make, but I'm including them anyway in case you want to do make a character out of them) and created a battle character out of it. To the best of my knowledge, not a single project using any of the bchars I ever made even hit demo stage. But it did add a lot of quality bchars out on the community, so I guess that's good.

This section is wildly incomplete and I'll be tossing stuff in here every now and then or by request.

MORE TO COME

I think I've seen some of these before.
But I can't put my finger on what CoD was.

CoD2 aka Control of Destiny 2 is my main RPGMaker game. It has like 20 hours of gameplay. I released it here a while ago, but it had some sorta serious bugs at one point so it wasn't very well-recieved.

This is why you're the king. Queen. Hermaphromonarch.

But you've got more than that! Don't sell yourself short. My personal favourite is the grey-haired bard complete with pose of embardulating musicality.

It's not that I'm selling my short. It's that this is taking a very long time. Man, I got stuff all over the place.

Since I still sprite I'll be adding to this thread indefinately.

I think I'll post here when I make additions in addition to tossing them into the main topic.

I had to make this. I HAD TO. You don't understand. It was cutting into my sleep. "What would Sai look like in RMXP style? I'll bet she'd look pretty good," my unconscious would ask. "Shut up you," I'd angrily reply to myself. "I have to do this statistics homework!"

Eventually I gave out.

This is her more traditional look with the sleeveless dress and anti-big gem character revisions I made a while ago. The game calls for her to have a number of different looks so I'll probably have another couple versions of her sooner or later.

Ah! One of my all time beloved artist is back in business and showing of their sets. You know I once (when I was a non member) I liked evertying you did so much i wanted to use all of it in a game, but i could never find sprites for a character called Gryphon (I think that's how it's spelled.).

Various Charites that have been awesome to me lately. Can you identify these three characters? I sure hope so, else I did a pretty bad job!

I freely admit to having no legitimate reason to put Myrin in her Outpost fighter "clothing" for this sprite. I also don't regret the decision in the slightest.

I may do more of these later. Not by request, but by impulse.

Actually, he's meant to be overweight. So bleh.

Also, Sai, do you happen to have the full 2K3 charset for Mid's sprite there?

I wasn't trying to make Warxe look fat. I just gave him a freaking huge trenchcoat. You can see it sticks out way past his body and legs.

This is the version I have of the Myrin sprites that I was working on pre-crash. The 8th character set is the one I use for Myrin's normal gear.

Sweet sweet character reconciliation. This is Matt, the series's inventor, who has gone through more character revisions than I ever hoped to deal with. Last spring I visited the real Matt in New York City and worked with him to draw the RMXP version of his character. I finally got around to making 2k3 sprites of it this weekend. If he's not happy with his character at any point in the future, TOUGH LUCK.

Buncha works in progress that I need to remember to finish and post here eventually. In the meantime, some of the sprites in action.

I have a ton of stuff. I should update this topic more often.

NEEENJA! An obvious edit of the RTP ninja with the following changes: eye color changed to silver, robe color change to solid red (it was sorta pinkish), and hair actually covers her right eye when the sprite is facing right. All the usual poses of mine too. I'm really happy with how her battle stance turned out, and I couldn't resist putting in an animation where she lifts up her hair to show that she actually has another eye under there.

My three favorite battle characters I did as requests: the unnamed traveling bard (that harp pose is my favorite bchar sprite ever), Aleksandra the spunky lesbian cosmonaut (I couldn't make this up) and the elven priestess Laura. If I ever make another game in 2k3, it will include these sets for sure.

It's a rule that someone who has an artistic talent has to create their favorite character in their best medium at some point. No, really, it's in the rules; go look it up. Nobody requested Schala and I'm not using her sprite for anything, but I made it anyway. I even did a bunch of status effects for some reason.

It's been close to 5 years since I made my last full bchar set. I wonder if I've still got what it takes to create the last 6 or so I need for my game. Matt here is the easiest of the lot - some of the rest will get pretty dicey.

Random sprites.

I decided that I wanted characters to hold their weapons in battle a few days ago so I whipped up some new idle battle animation stances based on previously drawn character poses. They look pretty sweet, but it's hard to appreciate them with four people in the party when everyone gets all overlappy. I also finished Myrin's set a while ago - here are some of my favorite poses. I'll post the whole set if anyone wants it - I even whipped up a non-dagger idle stance if people want to use the character with some other weapons.

A few of the "Corrupt Heroes" that serve as optional, very difficult boss battles. Their costumes and color swaps are based on early designs for the characters and unusual pseudo-inside jokes about the game. I think badass cape Jason and sexy warrior Sai came out particularly well.

Doing these sprites is great fun, but it does make me a bit sad in that I'm really only doing it for myself. At some point a few years ago I wanted to join an RPG making team as a sprite artist and make a great game that would actually see release. But there were so few serious projects and even fewer that would give me any sort of creative leeway. The ones I found were essentially me just doing requests, of the sort of "hey, I have this character. Here's his sprites. Make me these twenty poses in exactly the way I say I want them" ... which is fine in a way, but not the kind of thing that motivates me to stay up until 1 AM because I'm in the zone. At some point I realized I was getting a lot better at this and I could sprite essentially anything if I wanted to, so CoD2 has given me a lot of opportunities to just let the creative juices flow. I wanted Erika to have a stance similar to Chrono's. I wanted Myrin to dual wield daggers and go all rainbow when she uses her special abilities. If people had been more of the mindset of "hey, here's a description of a character. He's about 20, uses a spear, and has a scar on his face - see what sort of interesting designs you can come up with" then I would have happily joined with other people and been part of a team, but everyone I met just wanted me to work on only their completed vision with no room for adding my own touches.

None of the above paragraph signifies I'm going to stop spriting or anything. Just a random thing I've been thinking about lately.

I bet you could make a large set of civilian characters that a lot of people (including myself) would enjoy using.  That would allow you to be as creative as you want while helping out with other projects.  (Just a suggestion)

But I really like that one sprite in the bottom row in the middle on the first image in your last post.  I dunno, but the whole rainbow thing you have going on looks pretty cool.

This was a massive, painful undertaking. I've never sprited a non-human character, much less a robot. Not my best set; far from my worst.

Cool! O.o Robot's in RTP...I don't think it's ever been done. In fact I think it's what made me switch to sprite sized R2 units, since there were none when I was first planing Warped and my various Jet and David spoof games XD Good job on this one Sai. ^_- You're slowly bringing RTP back into style.

Yeah, it's definitely a bit rough around the edges. Luckily for me, being a robot, it's okay for him to be a bit clunky. :D I can't shake the feeling that it should be a better sprite but I'm not losing sleep over it.

General Greg "Gman" Pinky, in command of Jasonia's air force, the mightiest military machine on the planet Micras. Probably luckily for everyone else on Micras, he is also one of the few trustworthy men with the position. Known for his honor in command as well as a personal willingness to join the front lines if need be, Gman is one of the most beloved commanders in the military and leads entire armies through sheer personal charisma. He has sworn a personal oath to protect President Jason to the death; an oath that nobody, even his political opponents, wish he will actually have to carry out to its bitter end.

Gman is wearing a blue flight suit and one of those WW2 "bomber jackets". His two sword poses are based off ceremonial stances used by the US Marines.

Some Myrin expressions. I couldn't just use mirrored ones in games because her tattoo would shift sides. Rainbow one is funky.

Potentially my greatest work to date. Making Magus in RTP was interesting enough, but what I really cut my teeth over was making all the custom poses for his motions rather than just using the same RTP-styled ones. Magus doesn't walk up to attack - he glides, then jumps backwards wrapped in his cloak. He doesn't raise his hand to cast magic - he points it at his victim, letting them know they're in for it. He doesn't lay down on his back when he gets KO'd - he collapses in a heap, arms forward.

Overall, I think it came out extremely well. The idle pose alone with his hair and cape whipping in the wind is one of my favorites I have ever done.

Only one more bchar to do and then I am done FOREVER!

They're NPCs. They don't have names. I picked random colors to test the three types - earth pony, unicorn, pegasi - before moving on to the no-doubt more complicated main cast. The one on the right sort of resembles Fluttershy I guess, but it's just a coincidence.

Rarity is the only one I'm not totally satisfied with. The colors are perfect, the hair style is about as good as I can get at this size sprite... but I don't know. There's some difficult to quantify "Rarity quality" that I'm missing there.

Based on her stance when taking on the Ursa.

Becoming more and more tempted to make a Pony RPG...

Animated battle stance!

Animated trot/run!

These aren't the most ultra-shaded sprites, but they shouldn't be too totally impossible to keep a consistent look if I want to do the full cast and make an RPG out of it. As Twilight says, "Got to balance style with adherence," after all - they're recognizable and functional and, at least in my opinion, look passably decent, and that's good enough for me right now.
Title: Re: Sai'Kar's Sprites and Stuff
Post by: Prpl_Mage on April 10, 2011, 06:49:52 AM
The sick thing is that the overall lack of shading works great for these. I mean, the poonz aren't really shaded in the cartoon after all so it looks.... right.
And that battle pose looks good, amazing how the wobble effect can work to animate anything. The RTP did it, B/W did it and now your ponies are doing it.

Wobble effects are a godsend to idle stance battle animations. After doing like 30 RPT battle characters I got exceedingly good at it.

I think we're having logistical problems. I don't want to call the terms of the contest because it would give me an unfair advantage. We'd need someone to be willing to come up with them for us. Likewise, you two should have someone neutral decide the terms of yours.

I'd suggest a more chibi-version pony for the worldmap. Besides that - you're doing great. Using them pictures in the chipset is working surprisingly well.

It's more a matter of stylization than anything else. As far as colors go, I think that the pony buildings match the default graphics surprisingly well.

Also, it's REALLY HARD to stay motivated on this project when I can look in any direction in the fanbase and see people doing things a thousand times better than my little pile of garbage. But, I attempt to persist.

HOOF TO THE FACE, PRINCESS!

Yeah, I should probably get around to making a game thread. There's actual areas and items and quests stuff in the game now.

I see you're using the official map.
Yeah, I thought that'd be extraordinarily useful too.

It's most of what rekindled my interest in this.
