So, what's so revamped?
This time, I am working in conjunction with augenauf99.  Others may join in if they'd like.  The more the merrier. PM or post here if you're interested.

TEAM:
AFL - Main Coordinator, mapper, coder, music, monsters, charsets
Augenauf99 - Animations, music
Agni (Name may change depending if he joins this forum or not.) - Dungeon Design
With Help of coreystranick - charsets

What's new?
Graphics for all but Cura are new.  As well as the battle sprites for all of the characters, not to mention the four characters augenauf brought to the game.  Also, there are a few battle systems implemented, and an Alchemy system is planned.  (Flower shop... hm...)  There are a few more things that go here... hm...

[6/21/10]Progress IS being made, if it is slow.  I started on the dungeon that I believe will end the first demo.  There are still a few plotholes I need to repair after I failed to remember something about a forest and a burning tree. -.-"  Also, you can check out the most recent updates via our website (link in the first post).  It is much more updated than this topic.  Actually, this topic is missing quite a lot. O.o

I will admit, your choice of battle sprites is kind of odd looking.
Other than that, this looks damn good.
I wish you the best of luck with this venture.

Thanks.

I actually really really like the way the battle sprites look.

I know.  "Simple, yet elegant".  Not really, but you get my point.

Also, notice there is more than one screenshot this time! =D  The screen I had in the other topic is still in the game, but had Robur's outdated sprite, so I figured I'd leave it out for now.

I have to ask is the wind always blowing your battles? No Im jsut kiddign I actually like the battesets as well, they are very unique. Are they drawn by you?

Sweet, looking great so far.

Also, cura is portuguese (and a bunch of other languages too I guess) for cure. :P

EDIT: By the way, what kind of help do you need?

Actually, yes. -.-"  You should see Cura's full standing animation.  It looks like there's a tornado. o.o, but no, the battlers are just edits, some of them very time consuming edits, some not.

Sweet, looking great so far.

Also, cura is portuguese (and a bunch of other languages too I guess) for cure. :P

EDIT: By the way, what kind of help do you need?

Animations and charsets, but other things are appreciated. =P  Animations since I'm not using battlecharsets but Battle2 animations.  Augenauf is doing a lot of it, but... he's still not that experienced in making them.  Also, that was the idea for Cura. ;)

So far, the only charset I've done by hand is Robur's new one, but eventually they all will be.

Hey, if anyone is interested in helping me map stuff in the game, that'd be great.  I'm using all the chipsets MIC uploaded to the site in that thread he posted.  Contact me on MSN if you're interested.

I'm having problems coming up with some good ones. -.-"

Thanks.  Her's was the easiest to edit haha.  Yeah.  I just need to work on getting for of the stuff mapped out.  I am the slowest mapper ever.  Unless its  4 am.  Then I seem to get them done rather quick.

The mapping wouldn't be too bad, but I'm still getting the hang of MIC chipsets.  Its going pretty well I think.  Although, my forest ended up being more of a gully. -.-"

This game looks pretty good...but I'm really not liking the battle characters.  I mean like they look good, they're very well done, but they just don't fit into the graphics of the game IMO.
Title: Re: Tears of the Night [Revamp-ish]
Post by: A Forgotten Legend on August 19, 2009, 03:44:03 AM
I guess so. =P

Anyway, things are going.  I just finished some coding for the mini-boss the the first "dungeon"  though the first one is simple, I like it's set-up.  Also  I have a sneak peek at one of the monsters. ;D  Isn't he cute? As well as a pic of Rosele Woods!  Its not the best show... and it was taked from somewhere you can't actually get to... but... anyway!

I'm still hoping for a demo by the end of August.  It may not be very big, but it'll be something.  Also, the intro I have is being revamped, and is now being sync'd with a new song I've made for the game.  I'm pretty happy with it.

EDIT:  I've just realize how much Sedlig looks like Pleasent....  and I think I just mispelled that.  I hope not...

EDIT 2:Because Photbucket and I are having problems right now(apparently... my computer has had the wrong password for it saved... and I tried that one too many times and now i can log in!)  Here is the updated Lumena sprite.

Nice sprite. It does looks like Pleasent =P
Title: Re: Tears of the Night [Revamp-ish]
Post by: A Forgotten Legend on August 20, 2009, 04:42:33 AM
I know!  =/  haha, its almost like it was done on purpose. haha.  Not really.  But it does make me laugh a little everytime I battle it.

...on another note, I believe I now have someone designing how the dungeons are going to work.  Which is awesome, as that is also one of my downfalls.  Now to find someone who can design towns. -.-"

The demo right now is looking to go up to the second dungeon now, but I'm crossing my fingers on that.

More eyecandy. =D  I just finished him three seconds ago.  I also have it set up so if you came up to the monster from behind, it does the back attack.   Not too impressive, but its the thought that counts right?  ...and right now I need to figure out a way to make it so then the event doesn't face you when you collide with it. -.-"

Alright... I didn't even realize I coded this, but when a monster "sneaks up behind you" not that will ever happen out of trying to have it happen...  it does this:  Also, I died in this battle. D=

Post by: A Forgotten Legend on August 25, 2009, 07:11:51 PM
So I just finished today the forest I've been working on.  Its not perfect, and some of the rooms are kinda empty, but its done coding wise.  Next all I have to do is make another town, and a twenty room cave, and the demo will be ready. =D  As for now, look at this little addition to the Sedlig family!  He is my favorite.

Well, I updated the front page with the new character sprites made.  (I finished Vihr's new charset WHOO!)

Anyway, stuff's been crazy because of band the past few weeks and won't die down until after october is over.  Unfortunately, my animations person still doesn't have a working computer, so I may end up doing the first few characters myself. -.-"  Oh well.  I'm going to try to get it out, but I'm not sure how far along I will be by the end of the year.

EDIT:
-.-"  I'm soooooo far behind where I want to be.  Anywho, I got Cura's new sprite done. =P

Whooo!  Almost two years since I started and still don't have much done! >.<

Well, this isn't quite dead yet.  I just finished programing a nice bank system, and we started working on a revamp of the "passion boost" system.

Also, I need help.  Is this too epic for a boss battle early in the game?  Its not done yet.

Keep the battles tight and engaging, with lots of special attacks that suit certain situations and throw
in some interesting character dialect and humour rather than "Let us go to the castle to the East" and I'll
definitely be playing this game. I actually love the oddly-sized battle sprites. Makes you feel more engaged
with the battle at hand!

Keep it up, and make sure you do what I said! :p

EDIT: Any chance of a video? :D

Haha, tell me about it. My game runs off a central battle system design, so I still only have 1 battle with 1 type of enemy.
I have to make it absolutely 100% perfect and glitch-free before I can replicate it with different enemies :(

Well the way mine is set up, its similar to the DBS, but not at the same time. To make it easier on me, it calls a database event that has the information for every monster.  In regular battles, it decides the number of enemies, then using the information I give it in the battle event, it calls information for certain enemies.  This way its not a completely different event for every enemy, and its all in one event.  I only have to call the same variables, and the database event does the rest.

Here is how it works in a better description (I think)
I have a enemy 1 ID variable an enemy 2 ID variable and an enemy 3 ID variable.  Basically, I give the id number to the variable, and then the event will set the HP, ATK, DEF , etc variables for each enemy.  (I use three different common events, one for each enemy, 1/2/3).  In Battle, the event only calls upon the generic Enemy 1 ATK variable that was set by the earlier event.

I hope that made sense.

This whole timeline, frankly, is fucken lol.  Metallurgy was discovered before after ('scuse me.) the first kingdom was founded (In other words they tilled their fields with stone and protected their king with weapons made of horn?)  After that it took a single kingdom to unite the known world under a single banner 100 years, nevermind it taking the Roman Empire, equipped at their height with iron weaponry, nearly 300 years (Give or take) to conquer the northernmost coast of Africa and about a third of Europe.  Further, why is the year of the calendar increasing and then suddenly decreasing?

A war between two kingdoms lasts 110 years and has 3,000 casualties?  That's an average of 27 casualties a year.  There was roughly 30 major battles throughout the real hundred years war - that'd be 100 casualties per MAJOR battle, on average.  Further, a war of this frame of time only ever involved two countries?  No exporting of any weaponry or wartime supplies by any other countries?  No one ever got sick of the economy being strained by such a long war and the consequent destruction as to get involved as a peacemaking force?

Why is the colony at Linle any importance at all?  If we've progressed to a pseudo-mercantile, imperialist economic system by this time, as colonialism suggests, why pay mention to only one colony being freed?  If I had to guess, it's because "This was the only colony on the planet to ever be freed!".  Tell me that's the answer.  By all means, make my day.

How exactly do a series of floods destroy an entire kingdom?  I would guess if this setting was any more intelligent that the flood enflamed the political situation and lead to the collapse of the government, from which rose the other kingdom mentioned, but somehow I get the feeling that "an entire country didn't sink into the ocean" is too sensible for this writing.  Further, how does a wildfire destroy half the world?  Assuming countries aren't just a giant chain of cities along a single road, the fire had to travel across as many as hundreds of kilometers between cities.  How the hell did the atmosphere cope with that much smoke?  Do you have any idea how much smoke a fire that covered half the world would produce?  How is the world not frozen over?  Read a book - your fairly certain to find our planet didn't fair even half as well as this one, and we were dealing with alot less than a fire that covered half the landmass.

Nevermind all that, though, it took 300 years to recover from a wildfire?  A third of Europe was wiped out by the black plague and less than a single century later Europe was at the height of the Renaissance.

A few more things?  This world has the technology to alter a human into a furry (You heard me.) and lacks the technology to prevent a wildfire from engulfing half the planet?  Probably most importantly

Mentioning a 17 year old's tits in her character description - are you twelve?  I God damn wish you were, because at your age not knowing better is close on par with cracking a sex joke during an interview.

Alright, here we go.

A) This is an RPG.  I can have any kind of timeline I want.  And the planet can have any kind of natural disasters I want.  That simple.  Is it realistic?  No.  Is this a videogame?  Yes.

B) Numbers are pretty unrealistic as well.  That would be because I was just shooting off numbers.  Did I do the math?  No.  I was too lazy.  I figured they were going to change eventually anyway, so why bother?  Should I have posted them if I didn't check them first?  No, but I did anyway.

C) No, this world doesn't have that technology, there is another storyline for her specifically that I did not post.  This world does not have that ability.

D) I didn't make the description for Sarah, another one of the people working on the game did, and they felt it was necessary to add some humor in this overall serious storyline.

E) The timeline got messed up because I had two different timelines and then combined them.  I must've missed that they didn't match up.  Thank you for pointing that out.

F) Just because it was the first kingdom on the timeline, doesn't mean it was the first kingdom created.  Also, the Great Fires didn't destroy as much of a space you think.  The known world wasn't that large.  It would be about half of what the Roman Empire would have.

G) They were able to conquer because Metallurgy was founded.  Why it says it doesn't expand until after.  Also, it doesn't mean that they couldn't have used sharp sticks or used stones.

Overall, I find that your response to this topic was very annoying.  I find that if you would've posted all of the critique in a better and more mature way, I would've found it much more helpful, and less you just being a troll getting his next fix.

This is an RPG.

And therefore it doesn't have to make sense?

And I can criticize any timeline you want, you petulant git.

Did I do the math?  No.  I was too lazy.

The mark of a bad writer, and an even worse mathematician.  If it took even an inkling of effort to realize that 1500 dead across 110 years of fighting isn't much of a war you should probably head back to middle school, love.

I figured they were going to change eventually anyway, so why bother?

You wouldn't need to if you got it right the first time.

Just because it was the first kingdom on the timeline, doesn't mean it was the first kingdom created.

Because that sort of thing isn't worth mentioning on a timeline of your world's history.

And I'm expected to believe a quarter of this being on fire wouldn't cause irreversible damage to the planet?  Go ahead and google satellite images of a MAJOR forest fire.  Odds are it will be about the size of a pinhead at 1 kilometer above sea level.

Also, it doesn't mean that they couldn't have used sharp sticks or used stones.

Go gather some sharpened sticks, 30 of your mates and go try fighting a pride of lions for me, love, tell me how it goes.  Now do that while as exhausted, half-starved and marred by disease a neolithic man wold have been in his day to day life.  Now consider that this is a fantasy world, where instead of lions you're dealing with schools of four-armed rhinoceros men and the ilk.  Tell me how well it goes.

Let me guess.  I'm jes jellus that I can't think up the most generic, mindless JRPG settings with even half his proficiency.

Fine, you want to rain on my parade, so be it.  But why did you randomly decide to pick my topic?  Because some person decide to topic kick it after almost two months?  I don't see why you took the time to analyze everything I've done in my first post.  I don't get it.  Do you get off on that sort of thing?  I'm done defending my work, it's crap, yes, you've torn it apart.  But this is a hobby, not a life career.  It can be crap.  Why am I bothering to respond to this?  Because its my topic, I feel I have to.  I haven't even touched this project since I started college.  I feel the more I type, the more you are going to split it up and analyze.  I'm done.  I'm asking for this topic to be locked so this will end before there are most posts in this topic of us fighting than about the game itself.  When I work on the game again, I'll make a new topic.  I hope if I see you in it, it will be a posting giving suggestions nicely, or at least without the attitude you had when you made your post.
