Looks good so far, should be useful to qutie a few people when its finished.

BTW:  I did not hand-draw everything.  I use video game textures a lot when making chipsets.  And please don't download these resources, at least not until they're done.
I'd recommend putting a watermark on them, so that people don't use them.
People are kind of asshats when it comes to creative commons licenses.

Actually, these are still the lower-quality versions.  So I'm not too concerned right now.

Thanks, but I'm trying to make one on my own.  I'll have an updated version of it soon.

Also coming up:  Slums.

Version 2... sorry, but I don't think it's ready for downloading yet.   :badboy:So I watermarked it. :badboy:

I realize know that I forgot the poles people hang onto inside the train.

Pretty sweet, although the train is a tad sharp looking.

I'm putting lots of stuff up tonight... give me ~ 10 minutes and I will have three more (watermarked) chipsets up.

Opened up the texture files for XIII, made this battle animation set (type 2, rm2k3) mostly to amuse myself.
The "tap tap tap" (if you've played XIII, you know what I'm talking about) will be in the next animation set.

Pretty sweet, although the train is a tad sharp looking.
I know - noticed that myself.  There aren't any good reference pictures of the side view of a subway car.  The subway system in my city shut down over 50 years ago, so I can't exactly snap a photo of that.  Don't think the homeless people in the tunnels would want me wandering around there, anyway.

K, first look at my slums chipsets.  For anyone who's interested, that is.

All three are  :badboy:watermarked :badboy: because they aren't ready yet.

Tomorrow (?):
 - Some Metal Gear Solid items, put into a charset.
 - Corresponding item pickup notifications for ^.
 - Screenshots of the slums.

It's 10:49 and I'm going to bed.  Some people have class to go to, even in the summer.  And no, it's not summer school.

Yup!  They fit.  I'd show it right now if it weren't for two reasons:
 - My batteries are running low.
 - WINDOWS DELETED THE IMAGE.  FFFFFFF...

Hey. Just wondering though,
Did you make any of them? Or did you actually rip any of them? Or are you just taking parts from chipsets of other people?

I make them, but you can say I cheat.  I take textures from video games, shrink 'em or simply mess with them until they look like what I want.
For example, the subway used to be a concrete wall.  I added some lines, lightened it up and hey!  bright-ish metal on the side of a train.

OOOKAY big post time.

Slums, residential district sample.

Slums, business district sample.

Slums, interior of Harvey's General Store.

I use lots of textures in various forms when making chipsets.  Some are heavily modified, others are simply resized.  That's why lots of stuff doesn't look like I made it - I was too lazy to make my own versions.

For example, the wooden crate/box/what have you.  The texture for that was a direct rip.  I made another version.
Wow.  I spent way too much time on that tutorial.

And as for characters, I start with an empty character (no clothes, hair, eyes) and fill in the rest of the details on my own.

I can think of plenty of ways to make this post longer, but I won't.

EDIT: Here's one of those ways to make it longer.  http://www.irfanview.com/ (http://www.irfanview.com/)  This will help mucho.

Title: Re: Some resources I'm working on
Post by: MissingName on August 12, 2009, 11:29:59 PM
Nothing too major today... I started reworking pretty much all of my resources (not to mention a new signature and avatar).  Instead of directly ripping off textures for everything, I'm using them sparingly.  The ones I use will be very heavily modified to suit my needs.

Hand drawn corrugated steel, with some rust.  I used a reference photo for the colors.  Do you prefer the one on the left or the slightly darker version on the right?  . . . if you can tell the difference.
Title: Re: Some resources I'm working on
Post by: A Forgotten Legend on August 13, 2009, 01:03:39 AM
Both.  One looks like it is in shadows.  I would include both in a chipset.  (Also one that has the edges of a shadow)  They do that all the time in the Mac and Blue chipsets.)
Title: Re: Some resources I'm working on

Even more roofing!

(http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab303/MissingName/steel_roof_2.png)     (http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab303/MissingName/steel_roof_3.png)     (http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab303/MissingName/wood_roof_1.png)
The first one is heavily rusted corrugated steel.  The second one is roofing made with smaller sheets of newer steel.  The third is wood - looks pretty weathered.  All three are drawn using the line tool/pencil in MS Paint and a color enhancer in Ifranview.

For the steel, I realized that the fringes on the bottom won't work on a chipset.

These are all in 8-bit.  You just need to import them into a chipset somehow if you want to use them.  If you want, tell me what you are using them for but it's not really necessary.  I just want to know what's happening.

I've attached a little file explaining how all roofs I post will be formatted.  ROOFS ARE ALWAYS 48x48 (3 16px squares by 3 16px squares) unless I make a mistake.

Copying and pasting a texture is quick and easy, but it just isn't as fun as going pixel by pixel.

I personally think that the corrugated steel looks a bit like cardboard, but whatever.
Pretty sweet, overall.

A mostly hand-drawn version is on its way out.  A week, maybe?  Depends on how other things are going.

In the meantime, here's another little sample.

Oak and white oak.  Or old pine and unseasoned pine.  Or what have you.

EDIT:
Slums, interiors.

I prefer that you tell me you are using these.  And remember - newer versions are coming out.  They won't be as detailed but at least they're original.
Just about done with the new roofs and walls for the slums.  Now I need to draw items and the ground sets.
Drawing dirt is a b'tch.
Title: Re: Some resources I'm working on

Last stuff for tonight.  Tomorrow I will have those Metal Gear Solid-like items.

A concrete wall, with dirt at the bottom.

Unseasoned pine wall, starting to deteriorate and turn green.

A sample of what I can do so far.  The side is a weathered wood.  (In other words, it's simply the old wood roof turned 90* and modified a bit.)

EDIT: Almost forgot.  The walls tile in the same way as the roofs.  And the two walls are already in 8-bit color, so feel free to use them.

I like where this is going. Some people might find the lack of outlines jarring, which is probably the biggest sticking point. Also might want to experiment with uniform shadows. But so far this is interesting.

Eh, I actually didn't want really strong outlines.  But I guess if people want it, I'll add it on.  As for shadows, well, shadows aren't exactly completely straight in real life  :P  Straight shadows towards the bottom looks off for some reason.
Title: Re: Some resources I'm working on
Post by: warlock776 on August 14, 2009, 07:18:35 PM
I think that outlines usually make a Chipset work, but these are WAY better without them!
Title: Re: Some resources I'm working on
Post by: Darkfox on August 14, 2009, 10:13:31 PM
I am in agreement. Better without strong outlines.
Title: Re: Some resources I'm working on
Post by: MissingName on August 14, 2009, 11:36:11 PM
Hmmm... should I make a poll asking if these are better with or without heavy outlines?

Anyway, here's the MGS items set.

Going against my new outlook on spriting, I took the doors directly from screenshots of Metal Gear Solid.  The items on the bottom row are, left to right:  Ammo, weapon, ration, equipment.

And to top it off, here's the 'pick up item' sound from Metal Gear Solid.

Assorted flooring, for outside.  Ground, light grass, heavier grass.

The brick wall it pretty awesome.
The grass looks kinda...odd, but it's got a certain kinda style to it.
Not saying I'd use it, but...whatever.

The grass is horrible.  I need to find a better way to draw it.

This is how it USED to look.  Even worse.

Lol..you got a problem with green no-slip metal? I grew up on green no-slip metal...
and as for the doors, once again, I say they're better without heavy outlines. Everything is excellent so far..my mouth is watering over that sub-way chipset...or maybe that's just rabies I dunno.

I think it's the rabies...

I'm still reworking all of the slums chipsets, then I'll rework the subway.
Next will be the big city.

In the meantime:  dirt, light grass, heavy grass, asphalt, concrete and darker dirt.
I made these by drawing a large version of each tile, with bunches of grass or stones on dirt.  Then I shrank it down to 16x16.  Don't think it's half bad.

You know, the roof edge would work if you put it in the top layer.  Even if that means there is less room for objects, you can always make objects into charsets.
Title: Re: Some resources I'm working on
Post by: MissingName on August 19, 2009, 02:08:17 AM
Thanks! I'll try that.  It also eliminates the problem of having roofs larger than they need to be.

The first reworked slum chipset!  Enjoy.

...just kidding.  Here's the real version.

Slums, residential district 1.

I got too frustrated trying to draw water, so I simply recolored the RTP for that.
Followed AFL's suggestion about roofs.
About edges:  they aren't strong, but they still look good when actually used in a map.  (in my opinion, that is.)

An item charset will be ready in a day or so, along with the first reworked slums business sector and MAYBE the subway.  Tonight, I'm working on some AP Biology that's due on Monday, even though school starts on the 14th.  I'm only posting this during a break in reading and answering a giant list of questions.

Okay, here's the reworked slums business sector chipset, #1.

And some items to fit in!
Items are:
Plain large window
Garbage bag
Boxes
Bottles
Barrels
Trash cans
A trash can on fire!
TTMH type land mine. (It's for a plot device in my game)
A flashing mine, for after obtaining a mine detector
A leaking barrel, tipped over.

The subway is coming up in a day.  I think.

I don't know how these turned out somewhat 3D-ish.  I like it.

EDIT: I realized I forgot a cardboard box.  Oh well.

The subway will be out tomorrow for sure.

Today, I came across some facesets for a character I was working on before:
Alaric.  I don't know if it's his first or last name.  Inspired by the screwed up dreams I have (like Silent Hill, but before the games were released.)  Monsters from dreams and other somewhat normal people will be shown here too.  Eventually.

Decided to touch up the faces and hair [quite] a bit.  Gave him different eye colors.  He originally had gray hair and gold eyes, but then I saw Jet's avatar and decided to give him black hair.  Scrapped the gold eyes because they don't contrast with the skintone well.

I say either the light blue or green eyes look best.

And to be redundant, THE SUBWAY CHIPSET COMES OUT TOMORROW NIGHT.  I just ran into some problems with it.

Thanks!

The original original (with gray hair) is long gone.

And here are some other old faces:

Old version of the main character Paul, different emotions.  Kind of a greaser.

Old version of the emo-ish kid Alaric, different emotions.  I gotta say the sneer looks best on him...

Assorted characters...
 - Radishio!  His game is on the Crappy Games Thread http://www.charas-project.net/forum/index.php?topic=24265.465 (http://www.charas-project.net/forum/index.php?topic=24265.465).
 - The fat man is Waldo.  This is only his first sheet of emotions.  Game (FatMan Adventures: Quest for the Missing Cheeseburgers) was scrapped but he might appear in my latest game (Sokol).
 - Resident evil 4 merchant.  Does he need any explanation?
 - Bob the Squeaky toy.  Was in my short-lived deviantArt comic.
 - The Pale Man.  A very cartoonized version of something I used to see in dreams.
The rest is Waldo...

When I actually have something other than chipsets done, I'll put up a thread about Sokol.

*Sigh*

Computer was being stupid and deleted most of my progress on the subway chipset.  At least the train itself is intact:

What do you think so far?  I tried to round out the ends and make a better connecting passage between cars.

And oh yeah, it's still hand drawn with a bit of cheating...

I'm not fond of the assorted face but the other one was pretty, besides that everything is excellent. If you ever feel like doing something for TacTiles I would be really, really glad to have you on board. Benefits currently includes your own little area and card set in the postgame.

I like the train.
But I'm a sucker for cel-shaded stuff.

The emotion sets are old and need to be reworked quite a bit.  The fat man isn't supposed to look serious, though.

And sure, I'll join TacTiles.

I like the train.

I was going to try making a more detailed gradient but thought it would be a waste of time.  It looks good as it is right now.

Left to right:
Stealth
Professor Waldo
"Oooh! [insert food here]!"
"Oh, sh..."
Disguised
"!"
"?"
"Wha?"
Alex the Lawn Gnome

These are the last of the old facesets.

THE METRO!

You can make the interior of the station, outside of the cars and the insides of the cars.  I made it with lots of blue because it's going to be the "Blue Line of the Chenseau Metro System (CMS)" in my game.

A charset of associated items and characters (character templates?) to fit in the subway seats is coming up.

I really wasn't paying much attention to your chips until now but that set there is BEAUTIFUL. Almost makes me wish i was working on BloxGen again just so i could senselessly praise your work some more. That is seriously just pretty.

Hum, I haven't updated this in a while.

Enjoy, it's already 8-bit.

I have an I. M. Meen charaset in the works...  I'm also working on a custom chipset for zuhane as well as various things for my game(s).

Now, if you want a interesting custom chipset but don't feel like drawing it, ask me to to work on it.  I might not accept it if it's too boring.  It all depends upon my mood when you ask.
