Interesting concept you got here Felix, though your intro story is a little repetitive in the word play section.

I got Vanir from Nordic Mythology
"In Norse mythology, the Vanir are one of two groups of gods, the other being the Ęsir. In Norse Mythology, the Vanir are a distinguished subgroup of gods most associated with fertility. All gods of Norse Mythology can be classified under the one group known as the Ęsir yet the Vanir were a distinct tribe of gods that opposed the rest."

The game looks and sounds alot like your other games.

I would suggest working on your mapping, based on the screen shots.

I'm far more concerned about the gameplay things like hit detection and overall fludity of feel rather than maps. Maps can be redrawn in a few minutes, but a good ABS system is worth its weight in gold.

[...] but a good ABS system is worth its weight in gold.

No way, a good ABS isn't worthless.
Title: Re: SevenSkies
Post by: SaiKar on September 22, 2009, 02:17:28 AM
Hmph. I see what you did there.

Fine. To run an ABS you need a computer. The lightest laptop in the world (http://www.thelaptopauthority.com/sony_vaio_x505.html) weighs 1.7 pounds. 1.7 pounds of gold is worth about (http://www.onlygold.com/tutorialpages/YourWeightInGold.asp) $24,902.66. So, in the most ideal situation, you're looking at about 25k. That's a lot of money.

Smartass.
Title: Re: SevenSkies
Post by: Hell Angel on September 22, 2009, 02:21:17 AM
Well... An ABS clearly isn't a laptop weighing 1.7 pounds in any way, but okay. An ABS is data, which is either weightless or really ****ing close. I don't know, I'm no computer wiz.

Sorry.
Title: Re: SevenSkies
Post by: Rahl on September 22, 2009, 04:46:29 AM
I suppose tecnically data would be the amount of wieght it takes to shape the microscopic groves on a hard disk that comprises of the 01010111's that make up the game. So yeah.... Very small.

Anyways... back on topic, good luck Felix.
Title: Re: SevenSkies
Post by: fruckert on September 22, 2009, 04:52:02 AM
Don't you mean amount of...force?
Because that wouldn't change the mass of the disk.
Title: Re: SevenSkies
Post by: Rahl on September 22, 2009, 04:58:44 AM
Small grooves are carved bye lazor, therefore decreasin the wieght by an infintismly small amount.

~ABS Overhaul~
Overall combat: 76%
Normal attack: 100%
Skills: 68%
Magic: 32%
Muraiko:
Those were training maps, to TEST the ABS, so Saikar wins that round.

X, and Y variables were used in the making of this ABS

Looks like you're making good progress. Keep it up.

If those maps are just testing areas, then I suppose it really doesn't matter how they look.
But, like graphics and music, maps are just as important. Regardless if the game is an ABS, DBS, or if it's heavy on coding or heavy on graphics, It's still a necessity.

What in the hell did I just play?

The game opens with this weird, cryptic scene.   Something about how the Vanir, in a sweeping contradiction of Scandinavian mythology, are actually the avatars of some sort of light, and that some fellow called the Golden Knight is, as well as a whiny bitch, one of them.  The scene goes on for some time, with a total of about eight misused ellipses, and one 'ho-ho-ho'.  Taking both of these consequences terrible writing as somehow related lead me to think I'm going to finally learn why the Ultimate Warrior raped Santa Claus.  Sadly, that would make this game cool, so that plot never does materialize.  At least, not in the demo I played.

Cut to a child being put to sleep, where we learn that this was a fable being told to a woman's inexplicably green haired son.  Sort of reminiscent of that joke that was really popular in the 90's. "It's snot-tural."  Any way, she apparently told him this story completely unprovoked, since he's an only child, and the moral of the story was that siblings should not fight. This scene ends with the rock supposedly falling on the shrine of a village whose name is never disclosed, detailed in some exposition between the green haired boy's mother and a balding man in an apron.  This scene is useless, however, bar the fact that it further proves that Felix is the worst writer ever.  That, or land slides simply don't exist in this world, which would shock me, since I understand that they're quite common in the guise of avalanches in northern Europe - that is the place that this game keeps trying to convince me the customs of this world are adopted from, right?

"A some earth fell on the shrine!"

"A ROCK FELL FROM THE SKY, HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE!?"

Um.

Pic related.  No matter how much Felix chooses to deny it.

Any way, they leave, and somehow end up dead.  No mention is made of who raised the six-or-so year old orphan.  We simply cut to 10 years into the future, wherein he is now a fully grown man who is, for no obvious reason, proficient in swordsmanship.  He even got corrective surgery for his green hair, which is good, since that was pretty ****ing weird.  After some meandering about, introducing a character who is apparently the main character's close friend, who presented me with the opportunity to name my character.  I chose "Heimdall", and I assume very few of you will understand that reference, but that's okay, because, bar one of you, you don't pretend to.  Who also has access to lethal poisons and their antidotes.  But that's okay, because I'm quite sure I will be quite handsomely retributed for that incident in a key scene not far into the game.  But, maybe not.

Most of the game afterwards was spent dicking about in the worlds most dangerous forest.  Despite that, I couldn't help but find myself mentally wandering on an odd tangent, wherein I began to wonder what makes blue potions restore magic, and red potions salve wounds.  My conclusion was that every fantasy setting took place in the Might and Magic universe, and that phirna roots, despite being framed with different names between the various nocelles (The disk-shaped planets of the Might and Magic setting).  Then it hit me.

Nirnroots.

Nirnroots and Phirna Roots are one and the same.  See for yourself!

Hypothesizing on the possibly shared origin of these two plants is more interesting than you.  Go back and try again.

Any way, I'm accosted by what is no doubt some type of powerdful entinty, since it lairs "at the end of the forest" (despite the fact that forests are not buildings, and don't have an 'end'.).  It tells me I was never alive, in what I assume was supposed to be foreshadowing, and then I killed it with two critical attacks.  It's like a boss fight in Baldur's Gate!  Only Baldur's Gate's plot didn't exist just to excuse the player's existence throughout the stages.  And without the strategy.

I focused mainly on the plot because nothing else exists in this game.  The combat is haphazard and superficial, and incredibly volatile.  I'm afraid to play with the game's knobs and dials too much, out of fear that I'm going to break something.  The music was, at the least, decent, even if it usually didn't fit the mood of the game.  I thought that Electric Blue by the Cranberries was a strange song for the opening scene, and, while I love the song, your use of Inevitable Embrace by Epica as a boss fight made absolutely no sense, and not even just in retrospect.  Nevermind, I got sick of the rackety din of ugly clicks and whistles which hails itself music in this game two minutes in.

I can't recommend the game to any one, other than maybe Drakyith, as an unofficial conribution to his Crappy Game video series on Youtube.

Wow.  Just...

Yup, it said map00007.lmu cannot be opened, and it crashed.  Maybe I shoulda stuck to the path.

Also, after the beginning of the monster hunt, I found myself locked facing down and unable to attack.  I think something in the cutscene at the entrance of the forest is buggy.

Ahaha, I'll admit, there alot of bugs and glitches along the way. Sometimes trying to attack during a scene or something like that will lock your facing, I'll work on fixing that when I get home. The boss will die in two critical hits IF you chose easy mode. Try normal or hard. I never put the two and two together on that one. I just realised the similarity to GS. I haven't played that game in forever. The potion idea is just for visual aid, (and the fact that in EVERY {Just about every} game Red is health and Blue is Magic.) Thanks for the review. I'll try to fix the errors you've seem to have found. (that I obviously missed)

Thus my theory.

The lair, known as the END, is like  Heaven/hell. Except located in the forest, anyone/anything that dies in that forest is trapped there and becomes/recycled into part of the forest, so when you kill a monster or chop down a tree, the forest remakes the lost monster or tree, theoretically making the forest eternal. The fairy acts as the Reaper, or accountant, of the END and remakes and reanimates spirits of things that end up there. I always wondered, was might and magic the first game to create the red=health blue=mp potion complex?

:edit:
Was the forest music good? not my question, camman007's. He's the one who composed it.

The Demo seemed to work well for me, or at least I didn't find that many glitches. At the end, when the hero wakes up in the bed, the guy that's talking was invisible, so that was kind of awkward...

It was kind of hard in my opinion (I chose normal difficulty). The MP skill was definatly alot more effective than the normal slash, but MP seemed to run out so quickly. Perhaps you should consider making other ways to regenerate MP? Like maybe for every enemy you kill, you heal some MP back, or a certain number of steps?

I was hoping for a good game. Sadly this was not the case. The maps are way to empty. Some of the dialogue makes no sense. RTP. The graphic for the menu looks like a five year old made in paint. The enemies just need to stand to side of you to hurt you (heck they don't even have to face the hero to hurt him).

Tell me in what SNES zelda game does any enemy have to face the hero to hurt them. The menu is supposed to look old school. Not fancy in any way.
I suck at dialogue, hands down, I hate making dialoge so much. Now about maps, and "empty" The maps have enough room to move around and attack, yet still have a higher level of detail than my previous attempt.
I don't recall any RTP. Maybe like 1 or 3 RTP edits, but not hands down RTP. Anyways.

@Muraiko:
I guess I understand the difficualty(Badly mispelled) of this game Muriako, I just made the concept and system, of course I'm going to do some refining. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll make the hero have a higher MP

Ahm.  Good sir, I'd hate to tell you, but unless you've done some serious modifying to your Super Nintendo, this is neither the SNES or a Zelda game.  Hell, I find comparing it to Zelda is insulting, and I hate Zelda.

More relevant, yes, evidently that single faerie, despite being so unimportant that she had no immediately obvious name, and despite the fact that I, playing as a farmboy serf with inexplicable access to deadly weaponry, killed her in two critical hits, she's in any position to be the 'accountant' of anything which has the high probability of being so physically taxing.

Yea, ABS's are a bit tough. Mine's starting to finally come along, but as Sock pointed out, the enemies could hurt me by running into my side, and since I have my attack button attributed to the space bar/z button, when you're talking or press enter, the character slashes. I'm working on an easy way to get rid of that, as I prefer space to be attack.

Think it takes alot of patience to make an ABS? Try any other type of CBS. It literally takes FOREVER!
(I tried making my own type of CBS for another project a couple of months ago, and I have little to no progress made, other than the HUDs.)

I think making a Menu Based Custom Battle would be annoying.
I'm making a small duel 1v1 Turn Based Battle in my game. :3

I did that once. I got the enemies to know when to attack and even some commands, but you know what was hard? Making it understand how to go into a game over. XD It wouldn't do it at first and then it wouldn't stop. It always wanted to give a game over when the battle started. Unfortunately it's still on my old PC, which I have no way of reaching right now. ^ ^;

Ummm....It's not going to be inside the DFB (default battle screen)

The duels will be on separate maps, making my own Custom Menu/Turned Based Combat.

I say that the game is alright. I mean, the guy did do alot of work with the gameplay, esspecially considering the limitations of RPG Maker 2003. Though, the grid-like design of movement hurts with the current system. It's playable, but it takes some work. I say you should be glad with what you did Felix, it wasn't a bad job considering the limitations. Though perhaps you should edit the gameplay a bit to make up for the lack of movement.
Title: Re: SevenSkies
Post by: Felix-0 on November 16, 2009, 02:23:14 PM
I know how you feel. I hate the gridded movement, but it's all I have to work with. I'm working on revising movement, damage, and attacks. Maybe revise the attack delay, or enemy speed. I dunno. The skills are quite useful, Espically the Parry skill. I'll probably use all of RPG makers key imput ability. (/,*,-,+,0-9) Offensive Mystics will be the . Defensive - Recovering +.
If you have a labtop w/o a numpad, then oops. Mystics aren't required to beat the game, so not having one won't inhibit game completion.

That's all I got. I'll post an update, once I have something to update about.

The numbers at the top work. But the other symbol  on the keypad: ( +, - , / , . , * ) Do not.

My laptop doesn't have a key pad, but I have a special "Fn" key, and turning it on changes some of the letter keys into the numpad. Not all laptops have this though.

Dear Charas,

Ma neighbors are moving out. By neighbors I mean my brother and his roommates, along with internet access and a computer...
Unless my parents hook up the old tower in our house. I won't have computer access at home but at school I do.
I'm on at vocational school (forgot my flash drive D:), to post you this. Progress will continue but has been incredibly hindered.

I'll be uploading some .gif's of the animations. Yes. This project is still going. I like how progress is going for once. No more changes though. I finally have matching Graphics, good Chip-sets and Using Tales of (insert game here) Character sets, and a few Sukoden ones. My maps (finally) have some Layering and have a sense of consistency.

The ABS Combat is fixed, using Changeable characters, each with different combos, and can use Utilities in their own way. (Fighter parries instead of blocking with the normal shield like the swordsman, Mage can create Magic bombs instead of normal, ect.

Thats all for now.

Okay. I got up to the first fight against the mayor and none of the keys seemed to do anything. Shift wasn't letting me attack, couldn't change leader, died a horrible death without being able to figure it out. Also, who has a game over on a tutorial battle? Seriously now.

Forgot to disable deaths there.  :-[ About keys not working... that's truly weird. they worked for me. I'll look into it. Might be an error in that room itself.

I'll download it and get back to you, but as often does, I won't get back to you.

EDIT: Well, that was quick. I had the same problem as Sai. BUT, I'll give some critique on the intro and mapping.

I don't actually like the style of graphics you've chosen: the awkward chibi sprites, tilesets, and such... Actually, I don't mind the tilesets so much, they're just a little odd. however, the maps are pieced together rather nicely, so the fact I don't like the graphics you've chosen isn't a big deal. I can get over that and it's more my own personal taste.

Okay, more about graphics. There was some weird things that happened, for instance, I think you used Instantaneous for to transfer from the basement to the first floor, and vice verse, in the first house. That gave an awkward lag effect that was unpleasant.

The screen transfer you decided to use for one map to another (where it pans from left to right, or vice verse, or up to down) was actually really neat. I didn't expect that. But, you're gonna want to fix the double sprite thing, that's kind of just awkward and if that happens through out the game, that's not really cool dude.

The mayor walks on the walls right before you enter his "training room".

Ummmmm... That's all for graphics.

The music is good, I personally don't like mp3s in rm2k/3 because of the inability for them to loop too well. But the music you've chosen is all good so far. Especially that gameover theme ;)

Um... Storyline... Not too fond of the intro, I think I said that before... I just had no idea what was going on. It felt a little dragged out as well. And the sound effects were pretty bad man. Their was one that was all clippy and scratchy and ew, no good man. High pitched, loud, sudden sound effects that clip are no good.

Everything else was fine, I expected to learn more of what the main characters were talking about after the Mayor's tutorial battle but that never happened... sooo... That's all I can really say so far about your game.
Title: Re: SevenSkies (greatly OMGBBQchanged)
Post by: Felix-0 on December 20, 2010, 08:30:49 PM
Thanks Drenrin. I'll break down my reply into sections of what you critiqued.

Graphics:
I am really fond of those graphics. They seem to look smooth and fit well.
As for the cracter sets, I'm using them because I hate RTP figured character sets. I like them to have more form and shape.
I see I didn't fix the intro from the basement to the upstairs. D:

Map transfer/maps :
There's ALMOST NO LOGICAL WAY to remove the doulbe character. Ask DarkYoshi from RRR. He's the one who showed me how.
The mayor... I knew something would go wrong. lawl. I'll get to fixing that.
Most of The music is made by Camman007. Check him out on newgrounds. :3

The sound effects.. I know they awful! I hate them! Someone please find me a better set I've searched everywhere. D:D:D:

The storyline is a major overhaul.
I'm trying to work things out.
The intro will be revealed of it's purpose.
So far all you need to know is that you live in a small valley town named Fargo.

I'll toss out my various comments too:
Stuff I didn't particularly like:
* Slow, auto-advance text. I blame this trend solely on Linkforce. Listen, games are not movies, but at least movies have a pause button. Give me times to stop to get a snack or use the restroom or I'll just let your text keep scrolling without worrying about it.
* There were some pretty obvious misspellings in the beginning. Things like "Acctually", and "Your too late".
* I didn't really want to name my character, but there was no default presented. I just went with Bob. Since I don't know what his real name is supposed to be, I'll just keep calling him Bob.

Stuff I did like:
* I have to admit that, other than the things I bitched about above, the opening cutscene was pretty cool.
* This mapping is actually really nice. I want these chipsets. Well, I guess I have them now, so hah!
* Okay, this is probably the oddest compliment I've ever given out, but the screen transitions are oddly excellent. The WHOOSH when walking down the road, and the quick transition in the house with the back room that makes it really look like you've entered an unseen room. Wow! I wish I'd thought of these things.

Totally irrelivent comments:
* Why can't I open my menu?
* WATER is down in that well, you dumb kid! It's a well!
* That cat needs a meow noise.
* Can't climb the ladder in the chicken pen? Is this intentional?
* FARKING CHEST! I see you up there but I cannot get you! AGGHHSDFH
* Okay the major just destroyed me :(
Overall I enjoyed what I could play. But please play the demo yourself before releasing the fixes. You get one freebie out of good nature, but if I hit another impossible game-breaking situation, I'm calling it.

*I've fixed a lot of spelling mistakes, when I post a new Demo up. Please tell me any you find.
*Pressing okay with the blank spot names him Feyan. :3
*Menu is opened with 1 key. If you wann look at it. nothing can be opened anyways. >_>''
*Chest is later, you need the Magic Hook to get it. (that's what that blue thing is for)
*Latter is broken, event wise. I'll be adding it back in. >_>''
*I test played myself. I put that demo up AFTer making a big change, and forgot to check that particular event. I skipped ahead to the Caverns to test. But not that particular room. V_V''
*Trying to find a good cat meow noise.
*I even put in a comment if you open ma game up
:<
and see the DMG events. There's one Called DMG: 0 and it says, Thank SaiKar for this one.

**Also, did I delete the save files? If not load one and check it out.

*Longer talk scenes
*Preview of WIP menu with the 1 Key.

Extra comments.
Use Feyan if you want a challenge.
Use Sykes to rush through things. Press shift twice to use his Lv.1 combo.
Please try and not attack during talk scenes unnecessarily, except to find bugs that I can fix. I haven't set up stop attack event's everywhere yet. So if you find one tell me.
I haven't added in potions yet, but you do have two hero's and Sykes Crit rate is 1:1. So if you die against random enemies... I'm sorry. >_>''
