Title: NEStalgia - Byond MMORPG
Post by: NESonline on April 25, 2010, 11:29:52 AM
I was wondering if anyone heard of this game NEStalgia (http://www.byond.com/games/SilkGames/NEStalgia). It's suppose to be a parody of the old classical Dragon Warrior / Quest series of the NES. It also has a couple 90's movie references like Ghostbusters and whatnot. I played it a for awhile and I have to say I enjoyed it.

Overall the game resembles Dragon Warrior / Quest from the old NES 8-bit era. It is a parody, but still strives as its own game. It is basically a free MMORPG with few perks from subscriber access. You start as a "time traveler" (parody of Back to the Future) and make your way to Balzackia where your adventure begins. You are to prevent the future world from becoming destroyed by an evil ruler named Mardeck.

The game features classic RPG classes like Soldiers, Wizards, Clerics, and Ranger. There are 2 subscription classes currently, Conjurer and Merchant who have their own unique set of skills. It also features up to 3 players in a "party" system to help adventure with you. It also features a PvP system for those who enjoy that sort of thing. You can do quests to progress through the story line or simply to get experience / gold / items instead of grinding for them.

From time to time there are PvP tournaments in which players can participate in. There are also guilds to help this atmosphere of the RP nature and whatnot.

The author, SilkWizard, describes it as:

"NEStalgia is an original MORPG inspired by the glory days of traditional console RPGs. Essentialy "Dragon Warrior 3 meets World of Warcraft", NEStalgia is an amalgam of the best generations of RPG gaming."

Music was donated from various authors (unknown to my knowledge) and taken from free resources consented by authors

It is still under development as of yet. In a week or so an Arctic expansion pack will be coming out. Also, close to this, will be 2 new classes, Ninja and Warlock.

Well since there is a bit of confusion to the newcomer to Byond, perhaps I should give a basic how to, to play games:

1) Register (https://secure.byond.com/?page=Join) your free byond key from the Byond site
2) Install Byond Software (http://www.byond.com/download/) (this is required to play the game)
3) Open up Byond, you should see something like:

Account: Guest
Password:

Do not use Guest. Most Byond games filter out the Guest key for security reasons. It can work on some games (very few), but not this one. Instead type in:

Account: [Your Byond key insert here]
Password: [Byond key's password]

And you should be logged into Byond and can now log into any game on Byond.

4) Find the "Join" link under a "live" game's HUB page (like the NEStalgia link) WHILE still logged into Byond with your key (on the software and the site).

This is an MMO?

Also, I'm pretty sure joining just to advertise is against the rules, so expect a lock.

Yes, it's an MMO.

Well, if I had more time to stick around, perhaps I would do more than talk about a pretty much brand new game? It's just something I wanted to share...that's all. No need to get hostile...

What's the big deal if he wants to advertise?  It's not like we have that many games to showcase here anyways.

Like I said, it's against the rules?

Joining just to advertise something is usually considered rude, which is why bots get pwnd.

I'll give it a try later though, the whole "NES style MMO" caught my attention.

Bots get pwned because they want to sell stuff that has nothing to do with anything around here. This guy is advertising a free RPG game at a community based on making RPG games. Even if he did register just to show off the game, so few people play amateur RPGs that I'm willing to support him on principle. Thread will stay open.

I just made a ranger.
My only major complaint right now is probably something that's out of your control; the movement lag that can arise.

EDIT: Also, that "drag the icon to attack" thing seems to me to be a weird design choice.

Just out of curiosity, what were those bad and good experiences?

Various games being crappier than expected, games being better than expected, games being better than expected with crappy communities, games being better than expected and then become crappy.

It happens. A lot of amateurs trying to hype their games, especially in the Anime section. Some developers are actually making some breakthroughs with the community. Tried Regressia, or Ultimatum?
