Title: derp
Post by: Archdeco on January 30, 2011, 09:46:44 PM
I've been working on a 2k3 game since 08 or so. It's a game about a forum I frequent and not for general consumption, but I owe this site a lot of thanks in providing resources (and links to resources) and generally just staying afloat all these years.

I know these games have a habit of never getting finished, but I'm tackling development in a particular way, and I still feel good working on it.

So like I said, it's a game about a forum I really like. But I'm putting a lot of love into it. There's nearly 12 years of wacky hijinks to draw from.

JRPGs tend to not have much in the way of differentiating their playable characters, so I gave each one an ability they can use outside of battle (most of them puzzle-solving related) and gave the player the ability to quickly bring each character to the front without going through a menu. So it works kinda like Zelda, except instead of equipping items you're switching around fighters.

That mapping is really good.  Although, I'm guess there is a specific reason for using the RTP battlers and charset?

Also, I suggest posting these in the Screenshot Central thread (http://www.charas-project.net/forum/index.php?topic=27493.0) in the RPG Maker 2k3 section.

It's refreshing to see someone trying to make a game.

Good luck with it.

I suddenly really like you. Good mapping, a game with some attempt at innovation, and an apparent attempt to not take the game too seriously. There's little I disagree with.

Special symbols in the status effects on the battle screen? That's brilliant! Why didn't I think of that?!

Anyone who uses Bunchie the Llama as a monster in a video game is a cool guy in my book, especially when the monster is named "Drama Llama".

Aw, thanks guys.

Seven years later and I'm still tinkering away at it when the mood strikes. I guess it's my life's work?

Hey, Archdeco!

Now that is dedication.  When it is done, may I play it?

I honestly don't know how much enjoyment someone would get out of it if they didn't get at least some of the inside humor.

I don't mean to imply that I've been working on it the entire seven years. Or that I've even gotten far since the time I started this thread. But something about it keeps me from abandoning it. It takes up a lot of space in my mind palace.

So that's one city out of... sixish the game will have. This one's close to being the biggest one, but the main thing to take away is that every NPC is named, and based on a real person. They don't all have lines yet but that will involve a lot of research into old posts, as well as fleshing out some more of the "fanfiction based on a bunch of old forums" world building I've got going.

I really love the detail you put in this.  Also, even for someone does not get the inside humor, I do appreciate the references to other games that you have scattered inside this game.  The only thing that bothers me is the transitions used when entering the buildings.  I guess I am use to that one being used for battle though.  Other than that, I would love to give this game a try.

That's dedication to a forum. Are some of the people you reference still around to play it or is this purely for yourself at this point?

The transitions are a holdout from waaaaay back, and you're right, I'll change them.

Still kicking! In a discord. Not to the level you're seeing in that video but I'll see maybe 30 people online from the old days in my channel on a good day?

Here's a story I don't mind telling; Steve Goodson, the Sax Gourmet? That's a real person. Semi-famous in the nawlins area as a saxophone entrepreneur and infamous for getting away with fraud. Switching out peoples' instruments for inferior ones and then selling the good ones, price gouging, that sort of thing. All came to a head in a big forum war in the far off year of 2000. Guy still operates but now at least there's info out on the web of his fraudulent activities.

One of the people that spearheaded the campaign against him was a guy named Dijaldi, the one with the turban behind the bar. He's not alive anymore, but there's room in this game for him to do something heroic, I would think.

I really appreciate this site. This whole time it's never left my bookmarks bar. Between the generators and the resource repository you've been downright necessary. You're the best source for 2k3 materials on the net short of downloading other peoples' games and stripping them for parts like a chop shop. Which I have also done.

I don't suppose you guys have a discord?

The timestamps on these videos show just how slowly I work and how much I linger on seemingly small details.

It's been a while, eh? I'm working on the game at a pace fitting for a non-commercial product whose target audience is just my friends, but as long as this site stays up I'll have more to show you eventually.

And hey, if you ever have trouble keeping the site up, I can help that too.

About a month ago I was driving from Seattle to New Hampshire and on the way was Dijaldi's grave, in the middle of Montana. Never would have found him in that massive cemetery but as luck would have it I ran into a jogger that happened to go to high school with his brother, probably 40 years ago. We're all connected. The ultimate message of my game, really.

https://www.youtube.com/v/Kq2tU3y5BDQ

Two big things since I made this video; a bunch of my friends came out as trans, and I found out about the VIP RPG wiki (https://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=search&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=ja&sp=nmt4&u=https://www54.atwiki.jp/viprpg_sozai/list&xid=17259,15700019,15700186,15700191,15700248,15700253&usg=ALkJrhjAQe71_syFyuF7QpHuFeQrs9F4Ew). So there was a massive overhaul in character sprites. But I still like this area a lot. A mishmash of memes from different decades and obscure stuff put in for individual people to appreciate.

Wow... it hasn't even been a year? Feels like a lifetime ago.

One problem I've had, if you can call it that, is I keep meeting new friends I want to add. I've tacked some parts onto the end of "Part One", the introduction to all the communities, that feature forums that didn't exist when I started the game. For that matter, people that weren't even born when our original message board was created. I know I'll never "complete" this to my satisfaction in my lifetime, but it's worth committing this all to record.

Another Dimension, its name itself an ancient reference, is actually the space between realities, watched over by a capricious and frightful man by the name of Shadowlynk. He's been scared silly by the appearance of the heroes, and worlds are colliding.

https://www.youtube.com/v/VaG6U6OhJ0c AKWare, showing a possible conclusion to forum fanfiction from 1996 that ended on a Hello Kitty cliffhanger.

https://www.youtube.com/v/_xCS-Z35oq0 Ritzbitz, who in an alternate timeline would have invented Youtube Poops, if people had actually seen his work.

https://www.youtube.com/v/TcunCpNctPg Gamblor, the trickster god that tormented us that one time we went to Vegas.

https://www.youtube.com/v/dcbCXWLZswg 2fort2furious, the famous tf2 server. In this part I just recreate TF2 maps since I didn't really have much to say about the social dynamics.

https://www.youtube.com/v/TAHt4mnaEIs I never want to look at the code for this part again.

https://www.youtube.com/v/qyFZ5pLgP3Q Lastly, this is the part I'm working on right now. This isn't representative of the area as a whole, but I had this video on hand and hey, who couldn't use a plug right now.

I meant what I said last year, if this site needs funding to keep afloat, shoot me an email and we can work something out. RPG Palace finally died and you're one of the last holdouts.

Glad to see this is still going, but it also reminded me that I never finished that battlechar for you

I'm still lacking in a battlechar for her. As you can see there's not a big rush but I'm nearing a stopping point as far as story sections go, for now.

I know I should probably make a thread in the right place, I wasn't raised in a barn. If I should move just let me know. I just figured the forum was slow enough for me to be lazy, lol.
