Title: Healer Class
Post by: Brieg on May 29, 2011, 09:59:57 PM
Given the choice between 8-10 character classes for the main character of a game or as your character in an mmo or game like oblivion, would you guys actually play as a healing type character? Such as a white mage or a cleric?

MMO? Yeah, sure. Single player game like Oblivion? Pass.

I agree with Lucas. In a single-player game, a healer class would have to have some offensive ability, either offensive magic or better physical stats/weapons.

I'd play a class that can heal, but I wouldn't take the Healer role. Yeah, I know, I'm such a jerk.
But if you tried partying with me while I had the Healer role, you'd understand. I love self-healing, I hate healing others.

Oh and of course, I'd play a class that can heal only if this class also offer strong offensive abilities. Any healer class from WoW, for example. But White Mage, no... there's like Holy and nothing else to attack, so... no.

When I used to play WoW, I loved being a healer and was actually a main healer for a couple different raid groups. However, I don't think I'd want to play a healer in a single player game. An offensive class with healing abilities is great, but trying to solo with any kind of primary healing class usually sucks.

As for Oblivion...never played it, so I don't know.

All healer runs(or a single healer and nobody else)  on Final Fantasy are only fun because it makes the game four times harder. If it was the only choice, the game would be boring as balls.

it wouldn't be the only choice. it'd be the main character who leads a normal party. like playing a healer in mass effect, leading a team of fighters and such

Healers in Oblivion? Yeah, much like lucas and the others said, Oblivion's healer has some offensive capability in the form of magic. The alternative to that, the Crusader, uses healing magic to heal himself while fighting up close. And since Oblivion has only a single playable character, that's really the proper way it should be.

From what I'm seeing, Brieg, you're planning to make something sort of similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, where there IS a main character but you control many other characters than just him, right?

I agree Lucas. In a single athlete's game, a medical treatment the class will have to have the ability of some unpleasantnesses, or offensive magic or improvement body of quiet │weapon.

Jeysis, bots agree with lucas.

And In an rpg I didn't really make cloud the healer in FFVII, it would be kinda silly. He's the leader of the party and one of the few characters you just have to deal with. And well - when you get a new character they could always whip up those potions while Cloud is hacking people to pieces.
New characters tend to need some training to actually meet up to expectations while the one you bring pulls the team through. And having a great healer but sucky damage output will inedible lead to lack of mana and a wipe.

In dragon age I always played a damaging role while someone else tanked, one healed and someone in the back shooting things. Why? Well, the healer could only do that much with mana, mana pots were expensive and good healing spells had some annoying cooldowns. So in the end I made sure that all my party members used potions while the reached 30% hp or something. 'cuz remember kids. The healer class is the only class that can be replaced with 50gil potions.

Actually it would be more like.... uhm... .hack maybe? Iunno. There is going to be 8 (or 10) party members that repsent each choosable class. you can pick 3 of them to come with you, meaning your team will be as balanced as you made it.

I agree. I love classes like Blue Mage in FFXI, where you have damage-dealing spells in addition to a few healing spells. They can't "main heal," but they can certainly take care of themselves and the occasional ally.

A healer should only have to focus healing on the tank, everyone else shouldn't even take damage unless it's some heavy AoE battle.
I play a shaman in WoW and usually whip away a healing wave once in a while when my hp start to drop, no one else should have to do that.

Actually, I'd prefer a healer class over actual combat in an MMO. I just don't have the patience for a highly powerful build or style that crushes bosses in a single blow, but I still would like to be a real part of the team.

I with you on the Blue mage thing until they came out with Dancer and then I jumped over to that without much of a second thought.

Dancer's rad, because it whacks stuff to get the energy to heal.

In that case, to be completely honest, I don't think I'd really protest to having the option to play as a healer at all.
