Captain Novolin is a short humoristic RPG that parody the infamous SNES game 'Captain Novolin'. As Dreamer-002, you must help Captain Novolin defeat the forces of the evil Blubberman and defeat him before he can figure out that the 'useless thing' he found is actually a piece of a long dead arch-villain. Of course, the journey will not be easy ; sentient junk food, Godzilla, Weegee, Sephiroth, Captain Novolin's own stupidity and incompetence, and all other sorts of weird and crazy things stand in Dreamer-002. Will he succeed in saving the world? Will he succeed in maintaining his sanity despite Novolin's rampant idiocy? Play and find out!

Premise/summary:
The evil Blubberman, a minor villain, is attacking an Earth variant hoping to prove that he is the scariest villain ever by terrorizing it with his army of sentient junk food! He has also kidnapped the mayor Gooden of Pinesville, the fiend! He may or may not have found a Vertigo Shard, a piece of a dead arch-villain on the way to Earth but who cares? Sephiroth, Kefka, Godzilla, Dr.Wily, Weegee, and all other sorts of crazy guys may be running around trying to reclaim it but that isn't important, right?

Of course, this is a job for a true super hero like Captain Novolin! This game may include some strange loser known as Dreamer-002 but he's just some toy robot sidekick thing so who cares right? Diabetes-tastic!

The cast:

Dreamer-002
(http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h26/Zerodius/Dreamer002.png)
Some weird robot from outter space who came to retrieve and destroy a "Vertigo Shard", whatever that means. Sure, he might have lots of machine guns, missiles, and even some weird 'Phazing' powers whatever that is but everyone knows he is nowhere near as cool or awesome as Captain Novolin!

Dreamer-001
(http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h26/Zerodius/Dreamer001.png)
What's even more ridiculous than a toy robot who claim to be a hero? A GIRL toy robot who claim to be a hero! Apparently, those two are... friends... mates... or something to that effect and hunt evil together. And apparently, 'she' is there to beat up bad guys too. How ridiculous!

Captain Novolin
(http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h26/Zerodius/CaptainNovolin.png)
Absolutely and surely the most important character of this game! The awesome and incredible Captain Novolin sport the most incredible of all super powers: the ability to correctly manage his diabetes! Absolutely incredible, isn't it? Who cares about flight, super strength, super speed, or anything like that? DIABETES! Yeah!

Blubberman
(http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h26/Zerodius/Blubberman.png)
The fiendish villain who terrorize Earth! Fear his army of sentient junk food! ... what do you mean, junk food isn't scary? Sugary junk food is very bad for your health!

Kefka & Sephiroth
(http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h26/Zerodius/Kefka.png) (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h26/Zerodius/Sephiroth.png)
Those two clowns have been showing up around lately, looking for... something... and beating up everyone who got in their way with strange, really flashy magical tricks. They're probably harmless. Who dress up like that these days anyway?

Weegee
(http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h26/Zerodius/Weegee.png)
Some... weird green plumber thing. Probably just an ordinary plumber. Wonder why I even included him on the list. Ah well.

Vertigo
(http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h26/Zerodius/Vertigo.png)
Apparently, a shard of this thing was found by Blubberman. But who cares when she's dead? What's this shard gonna do, come to life and kill everyone? She's probably in this list just as a dumb background story reference.

The Merchant
(http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h26/Zerodius/Merchant.png)
This lunatic show up whenever heroes need supplies and this, no matter the place, no matter the time, no matter how improbable it is for him to show up. In exchange for materials, gold, or whatever your world's currency may be, he'll take out stuff from his Hyperspace Technology Super Pockets and give them to you. Please note that shoplifting is punished via point blank shotgun blast.

Mayor Gooden
(http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h26/Zerodius/Mayor.png)
The good mayor of Pinesville, kidnapped by the evil Blubberman. The poor sap only got enough diabetic supplies to last 48 hours. Captain Novolin must rescue him and save the world from those evil junk food aliens! Will Captain Novolin succeed in his quest?

FAQ:

Q. How come Captain Novolin's status display as S.Low/S.High and his HP keep dropping all the time?
A. Like in the original game, Captain Novolin is totally incompetent regarding managing his own disease and conveniently didn't bring any supplies with him. Collect one (and only one) of every food item in every area to keep him stable and prevent him from getting that status.

Q. How come Dreamer-002 and 001 don't level-up? How do I make them stronger?
A. You REALLY expect anyone who isn't named Captain Novolin to gain experience from sentient junk food? More seriously, use the materials you gain from beating enemies and bosses to buy new weapons and gadgets for the Dreamer characters. Each boss should give you enough money to buy at least one new weapon.

Q. The health bar in the water levels is kind of spastic... [FIXED IN VERSION 1.1]
A. I apologize for that. Coding the health bars in the water level was a bit inconvenient and as such, it refresh only after battles rather than all the time during overworld sequences.

Q. The health bar in Reviewer mode is buggy!
A. Yes it is. Reviewer mode is kind of a joke mode (or for those who cannot stomach challenge in games) so I don't plan to fix that point anytime soon.

Q. Help! *insert boss name* is mopping the floor with me!
A. Sentient junk food is harmless. Bad guys like Sephiroth and Godzilla aren't. Again, more seriously, the bosses are balanced to give you a good fight. Each boss has a specific strategy that works best against it but overall, you should make sure you have enough regeneration items and ammo points to weather boss attacks.

Q. Why should I bother with New Game +?
A. Apart from keeping all of your equipment and inventory items, playing on New Game + make the Extra Stages available. Clearing them net you the Material Weapons, special weapons that are incredibly powerful. Likewise, after clearing the game at least once, Hard mode is unlocked.

Q. Boss Rush? Hard mode? What the...
A. Hard mode change the characters to 8-bits variations, swap the soundtrack, and make the game *MUCH* harder. It also change the story a bit, removing all dialogue and replacing them with new events. You get a different ending on Hard mode as well. As for Boss Rush, it's exactly what it sounds like ; face every boss, all in a row. Do note that at the end of Boss Rush mode, you will face an extra-special super boss. Beating it will get you the game's third and final ending.

Q. The graphics sucks! Your music isn't orchestrated! Where are the 100% event-scripted, picture-using custom menu & battle systems?
A. I didn't make this game to be a serious 70-hours epic with philosophical storyline and revolutionary gameplay. I made this game to be a humorous short RPG. I did try to make the game genuinely pleasant to play (with the mechanics, mix of original material + my own twists, and the extra content) but on another hand, please keep in mind that this game is not exactly meant to be taken uber seriously either.

Q. A note in the readme says that Hard mode and Boss Rush aren't playable yet... yet they are. What the... [FIXED IN 1.1]
A. A goof on my part. The readme is mostly completed except for that note, which I forgot to remove. I did notice the goof and correct it but as it's not a proper gameplay fix, I did not upload a fixed version yet (besides, all of the FAQ except for that note is correct so just ignore it).

Q. An enemy killed Dreamer-001 at the same time she was to act and after reviving her, her time gauge won't fill up!
A. Unfortunately, this is a bug with the battle engine itself and isn't easily fixable. The easiest fix I have would be to make Dreamer-001 manually controllable but that would require to rebalance the game quite a bit as it's designed with the idea that the player only control the player character at the moment. Still, if the bug happens to you, all you need to do to fix it is to raise 001's HP high enough that the next time she get attacked, the attack won't kill her. After being hit (and surviving), 001's time gauge will return to normal. Do note that if she is killed without her time gauge resetting, the bug won't go away ; make sure 001 survives. The bug is very rare but if it happen to you, the steps above should help you fix it.

---

Hope you enjoy the game! If you run into any bugs or crashes (excluding the health bar bugs mentionned above), please tell me so I can fix them.

Thanks.

If you have any comments/questions about the game, feel free to ask away. I actually appreciate the criticism.

I'm working on an update for the game. Not sure when it will be released but it will be a minor/bug fix-related one. So saves should be compatible when the next version is out.

Features/fixes already implemented in the new version:

-stage 2 HP bars now work correctly
-Goof in the stage 3 intro cutscene regarding dialogues have been fixed
-'surprise' at the end of boss rush mode has been updated graphically
-final boss theme has been swapped + credits changed accordingly
-minor edits to level design (stage 2 of both normal and hard mode, stage 5 & 6 for hard mode)
-final boss fight is now slightly altered (the final boss's generic 'hit all party members' attack do less damage now. On Hard mode, this move is now replaced with a hard mode-exclusive special attack)

Features/fixes left before I release the next version:

-boss rush HP bar is to be initiated correctly (slightly buggy although less so than in stage 2 pre-fix)
-maybe make the food mechanic more obvious (it seems everyone on first playthrough collect too many food items)
-potentially improve the food mechanic (increase importance of collecting one of every food item)
-fix the sound effects for stage 4's cutscene
-improve the ending/credits sequence on boss rush mode
-remove the note in the readme file that says that hard mode and boss rush aren't playable

Oh and by the way... if the link goes down, please notice me (via post or PM) and I'll renew it.

This looks like something I could enjoy playing. I haven't played an rm2k/3 game in god knows how long... I almost forget what it feels like. *sigh*
