Title: Eternal Sonja (made with basic RPGmaker2003)
Post by: daoman89 on April 11, 2012, 03:34:03 PM
"Everyone has their own methods of motivation that help them achieve their goals, but are these methods right or wrong?  Will you let these methods change who you are and become somebody you despised from the beginning?  As time progresses forward, who you are constantly changes..."

The game I am currently working on is about a group of people who find each other, whether it be fate or destiny, nobody knows (except me :P).  One acts on revenge, another fear, another logic, and the last to make a difference.  Their primary goal is to stop a man who is spreading chaos throughout the world of Salamandrio because of unknown reasons.  Is it their destiny to stop him, or do they have the choice to walk away...

The gameplay is pretty simple and battle system is as well.  I thought up the story myself (with inspiration from other games obviously, it is extremely hard to come up with something entirely new) and I have composed the entire soundtrack.  Graphics and Sets etc are from various places and of course, will be credited :)!  If you ever see your graphic creation, then know that I appreciate the resource greatly :D!  Kind of like a classic feel you can say.  Anyways, a demo is available as soon as my friend test plays it for glitches lol.  I thought I would just put it out there.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!!

Interesting.  I would suggest posting some screenshots of the game to give us an idea of what the graphics will look like.  Often, people post character graphics or face graphics to show us some of the characters we can expect.  The plot information you gave us was pretty good for introducing us to your game.  Can't wait see more!

And as a fellow music writer, I'd love to hear the music!

Why thank you for the positive comments haha :D

I'm afraid I cannot show you the original version of some songs because I told myself I wouldn't but I'll be more than happy to email you a few midis so you can get an idea of how they sound. (I attempted to upload them into the resource section but they didnt go through :( )

And the story goes into way more depth than that haha :)

Here's some screenies (yes they are mostly original sprites, chips, etc.)  Actually...  How do I post screen shots?  The image code doesn't seem to work when I previewed it haha

Use a hosting website (Example: www.photobucket.com)

Create an account -> Upload photos (Up at the top in green if you used photobucket)

Once the photos are uploaded, hover over the picture and click the [IMG*] code option. This will copy it.

Paste it into a post on this forum. Your pictures will show up when you post it.

First off: Decent use of rtp. Not the best I've seen, but still quite good.

Second: Don't save pictures as jpegs if you can help it. PNG is the best file type.

Third: Don't take offense to this question, but is this your first/second rpgm game?

Technically it would be my third attempt
Title: Re: Eternal Sonja (made with basic RPGmaker2003)
Post by: daoman89 on April 12, 2012, 04:26:33 AM
My primary focus is not on complexity right now.  I'm making it pretty basic because I wanted to create a classic feel to it like you're playing an old Final Fantasy, etc.  Another thing I did was make the game hard, so newcomer RPG players will not like its challenge hahaha.

I really like your town designs.

also what is RTP?
Title: Re: Eternal Sonja (made with basic RPGmaker2003)
Post by: daoman89 on April 12, 2012, 03:17:41 PM
Haha thank you!  The one you can go under the bridge area, so there's technically two layers.

The RTP is the standard one that RPGmaker2003 gives you when you first download it.  Otherwise I don't know how else to explain it in more detail.

So most of the graphics are default and some other resources I have downloaded (will be credited).  I do not use any of the default midi files because I am composing the entire soundtrack myself (currently at 40+ tracks).  The sound effects are mostly from the default RTP.  I'll post more screenies for you guys (in PNG :P)

Nice use of RTP, but could use improvement as Jesus said. Try experimenting with holding shift while placing auto tiles, see what happens!
Title: Re: Eternal Sonja (made with basic RPGmaker2003)
Post by: daoman89 on April 12, 2012, 04:16:56 PM
I agree with you and Jesus (lol) there.  I'll fix them after I finish building the entire game beginning to end.

My main goal in Eternal Sonja is for the players to learn from the experience and grow a connection with the characters and world.  I want them to enjoy the story I have to tell and perhaps even apply it in their real lives (such as what to do in certain situations).  It has an estimated time of 30-40 hours beginning to end, not including side quests.  And you won't just be walking around like you do in a lot of the older RPGs made in the 80's and 90's.

Thanks for the support and comments! :)

If you'd like to share some of the midi's you can use a site like box.net :)

Even if you want to keep the RTP style, you could make the characters more personal to the game by creating new sprites for them.  The generator would probably work great for you since most of the sprites are in that style.

Post by: daoman89 on April 13, 2012, 02:58:35 AM
The music in the game are actually MP3s and not midis because I don't like the sound of midis.

I am personally fine with how the characters look and if i suddenly change them my mind might get confused when I'm brainstorming or thinking up ideas lol.

A song or 2 or 3 or 4 will be on my box.net account as soon as get the darn confirmation email.  Take note they are only midi files and not the original versions.

I'll post link or however I should do it as soon as its up in running :)

I agree on the quality of midi's versus an mp3.  I really enjoyed the main theme with piano.  I was a little nervous about hearing these, but they're great.  Good job!

I don't know your knowledge of theory, but one thing you may want to try is adding other tones to your regular triads.  Especially in I Swear I Won't Forget You.  In the string chords I feel that would add some nice tension.  Putting some chords in inversion to help the voice leading there would make it even more smooth in the string chords.  A lot of unison in the strings can seem very angular and I feel like you aren't trying to portray that style here.

I enjoyed Lost in the Shadows.  It seemed very eerie.  And the cymbal crashes on various beats help a lot.  The high strings in the ostinato pattern are nice too.

Lol thanks, but in I Swear I Won't Forget (scratch the you), you can't hear the full strings as it is in the original version.  I guess I'll post ONE mp3 lol.

Hmm, I would personally not make all the roofs connected to each other. That tile lacks a bit on the outline department which makes it look a tad bit odd. But you're doing great, the rtp isn't as bad as some people make it out to be. Of course there are wonders people can do with other chipsets.
Title: Re: Eternal Sonja (made with basic RPGmaker2003)
Post by: daoman89 on April 14, 2012, 05:48:38 PM
Yeah, unfortunately the roof that was used doesn't have an end piece.

A flaw in the dungeon chipset (default) that irks me is a diagonal piece.  One with the rock, etc and the other diagonal half with the pink (background customization piece).  If I could find like a piece like that where I could just make an event so it would appear, that would be sweet.  Cuz it doesn't make caves with deep holes look good... :(

I personally like the RTP, that's why I'm using RPGmaker2003 in the first place.  But that's just me.

That's odd... I swear I posted here a couple of hours ago...

Anyway, looking good, especially since you say it's basically completed. I look forward to the release! I won't prejudge before then.  Do you know when it'll be? You should never let these things drag out too long.

Btw, I'd prefer my music to be viewed only and not used.  And if ever used in the future, I want full credit.  :)

I know what I did.  I thought I was hearing octave doubling but it was fifths.  Oops... looks like I to practice my ear-training.  -_-"  It seems like the third of the chord sometimes gets lost.  I can kinda hear it, I think, but it's taken over by the other strings.  I do like the song a lot.  So, don't think I'm trying to put it down at all.  haha  But, yeah, the mp3 version does help it quite a bit.  What are you using to write the music?

They're all quite nice, especially that last link.  It's almost like its too good for the style of game you're making. XD
Title: Re: Eternal Sonja (made with basic RPGmaker2003)
Post by: Meiscool on April 15, 2012, 08:05:54 PM
It is too good.
I personally feel that mp3s should not be mixed with retro-style graphics. Gives a serious quality conflict.
Not to say they can't be done in 2d at all, just saying that RTP graphics are very old-school, so it seems more fitting to have oldschool music accompanying it.

And hey, I disagree heavily with your signature. If nobody critiques on one's creation, they will never get better, and they will never realize what they're doing wrong. Lack of constructive critiques halts the learning process.

Plus, I've noticed many people use various programs when making music for their games, but I think using a notation software is much more difficult and fulfilling.

Making games hard is great and all, but if the person who made the game has difficulty with it, then imagine how those that don't know the inner working of the game will struggle.

If I make a trailer...  Should this be the medley song that plays?

https://www.box.com/s/0b97f446512b915bafc4

0:00 - 0:38 (Kyro's Theme), 0:39 - 1:30 (Desperate Escape), 1:42 - 2:21 (Vash's Theme), 2:22 - 3:23 (To Walk With Determination), 3:25 - 3:35 (part of Traversing Across Unknown Lands)

The recording kinda went bad during Vash's Theme... And it's not that important to fix at the moment haha :P

Antagonists

Lance

A mysterious man who commits horrific crimes wherever he goes.  His intentions are unknown and he shows little mercy to those he comes into contact with.  His power is unmatched, as to why, the heroes are trying to find out.  He is known as the leader of the group Sonja.

Occult

A masked man who does not think for himself and obeys Lance's orders.  As to why he willingly follows all orders, no matter how cruel, is unknown.  He too seems to wield supernatural power like Lance.

Sonja Soldiers

The main pawns of Lance.  It is said that the people who Lance murders become his soldiers.  Why this is remains unknown.

The World of Salamandrio

The world in which the story takes place in.  It is huge with many island and continents, each with a history.  The world has seen many bloodshed in the past and its main law is "only the strongest will survive".  It contains animals and many monsters.  Supernatural beings residing in it are Eidolons and Demons, both existing to counter-act each other.  To distinct races of people also reside in the world, the Humans and Amnatives.  Humans have no special abilities, however, Amnatives have been gifted with a variety of abilities.  The world constantly struggles to remain balanced.

I have a request (it will not have an effect on the demo).

I heard there is a program that allows you to create a world map picture from your world map.  I would be very interested in getting my hands on this to improve my map picture haha :P

Also I've uploaded the MP3 version of Lost In The Shadows for Legend :)  He seemed to be the one to enjoy the midi.

Tonight...  The Eternal Sonja Demo will be released!  How long is it you ask?  Good question.  I'd say approximately 3 to 5 hours long.  File size???  A gargantuan 285 MB, yay!  It's because of the Mp3s.  Also, some of the stuff is definitely subject to change.  Areas will become larger and glitches fixed etc etc.  If you do notice a glitch, please let me know via email or tweet or this board.  Stay tuned :D

Just an fyi...  I did not write the overworld theme and the gameover theme.  They are both songs from Chrono Cross :)
Inspiration for those two themes have not come to me yet.

I managed to make this town within a few hours last night.  Gotta stop slacking on production :P

This here is Iirah.  Events within it, etc. I haven't completed yet obviously.  This one part I'm doing is going to be a pain so I've been procrastinating haha.

285 MB is needlessly large. I understand that the majority of it is music, but still. Did you make any effort to compress the mp3s?
