Title: Winds of Nevermore. (WIP)
Post by: KnMsShadowWing on April 25, 2012, 05:04:40 AM
Hello everyone. M here.

Now before i start off i want to make a few things clear.
1. I am not and do not wish to be a professional Game designer. I'm aware that some of you take this very seriously, But i'm just doing this for fun. Nothing more.
2. This is my very 1st game. Its mainly for experimental purposes. I don't expect anyone to play this ever. I will release it, i just doubt anyone would bother to play it.
3. Just because my friend and i started a group (KnM's Shadow Wing) does not mean that we think we're professional game makers. Again, Just for fun.
So here we go.

The game is called Winds of Nevermore.
The plot is very cliche. Something you might see in a anime or something. Its not free roam like most RPG's are known to be. It has a set path and you pretty much gotta take it (a flaw i noticed very later on). I wish i could have given it a free roam Environment but i'm still pretty inexperienced. I'm really bad with switches, i only know the bare basics of them.

I have 2 versions of the video. One version with my commentary explaining glitches and that sort. And one with just the gameplay.

The version with commentary can be seen here: Explanation, Update and Winds of Nevermore With Commentary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gv-N2Dv7a9g#ws) (There is a little explanation at the beginning skip to 6:30 to get past it.)

So without further ado here's the video.

Winds of Nevermore (No Commentary) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeRK-2xgl10#)

So any feedback, ideas, tips, anything. I'd love to hear them.
Thank you for your time.
-M.

EDIT: The game is also unfinished. I'm still working on it. Forgot to mention that.

Sounds like you could use a self-esteem boost, or that you're expecting us to be uptight. Don't bring that here. Your have no need to be ashamed about a sub-par product or goal, because we're not gonna chew you out. We're all pretty chill, fun-loving folks, and we love to see a passion for this stuff, even if the makers lack the skill or knowledge to make something exceptional. And, truth be told, most of us haven't worked on this stuff in a while (years, even!), but we hang around for the community. We're really that relaxed and accepting around here.

Anyway, definitely looks like a "my first" project, but you've gotta start somewhere, right? If you want to make something a little more respectable, we have our massive resources section, discussions right here to help you improve the product, and perhaps someone willing to help out with making custom resources.

God, I feel like I'm writing a welcome newbie message. Whatevs, looks like a good start, keep it up.

Since it is a first game not a whole lot to comment on. Most people notice the shortcomings of their first creation and correct them in the second, while keeping the strong points they had before. You may want to experiment with importing your own resources (music, graphics, etc) to see how that impacts the game making experience.

Here's a new clip from the game that wasn't in the showcase video. It doesn't show much. Just talks about the main plot and introduces another character.

It's great that you're getting into making games, and the charas forums will always offer support and criticism, even if it's quite a small user base compared to other forums.

Going by what people have said, this looks to be your first or one of your first games. Having a full game completed is a rather large task that very few people have managed
to reach, so you'll earn plenty of respect by working on games.

One important thing that you'll notice is how people tend to stray away from using the RTP (Art, music and sound assets provided with RPG Maker) because everybody's messed
with them and seen them, and they're pretty sick of them by now. To make the jump to the next stage, try experimenting with importing custom resources into your game. Chances
are, it'll add a new depth and atmosphere to your game that people haven't seen a million times before! If you need any help or advice doing so, feel free to ask. Looks good for a
first attempt, so keep working on games! :D

Thank you very much zuhane. This is my very 1st game and it was originally just supposed to be a learning experiment for the program. Admittedly, More than half the game is in RTP, but i do experiment with new Chipsets in a few parts of the game. The game is rather short so its nothing too impressive. Making games is a lot of work but very fun. I'm sure my associate K and I will continue making games for awhile. Again, Thank you for the kind words and advice.

Well, it looks good. I would personally just, y'know, colour swap the characters hair or something, maybe make some new ones. There's just something about games that uses the base RTP heroes.

I agree, I'm sure people are tired of seeing RTP stuff since its "been there, done that" in a way. But my main issue is having matching face and battle sprites. I've made many characters using the CharEX program, the issue is always the face and battle sets. Facesets don't really matter much to me since you can do without them, but you pretty much need battlesets, and the options for creating them are very slim for non-pixel artists.

Makes sense. I have no real problem with the RTP chipsets animations or monsters (as long as the storyline bosses are a bit more original).
It's just that I've seen so many games starring blue haired Zack and Hero Alex, mostly accompanied by green haired elf and the beautiful Alissa (People really dig that sprite). And most of the time, people keep the names as well.
And I do get what you're saying about the battlecharsets, the RTP ones take some time to make and that's mainly the problem with the B char generator, stuff don't always work together and such.

But if you want I could give the stuff a colour swap, It's odd how different it looks when Alissa is blonde or when you swap around some of the hair models between sprites. Monk-bald Alex with a different coloured attire? Works fine. Anything like this adds a feeling of unique characters even though the changes are slight.

doesnt look bad for a first game. Not bad at all. And once you get used to rpgmaker 2003 I am sure you are only gonna get better.

You should check your spelling, grammar and punctuation.  It makes things kind of hard to read :)

tresure = treasure, gaurd = guard.  It's a shame the program doesn't have spell check though :(

Anyways, lookin' good!  Keep working hard and listen to what others say on how to improve your game!  There are also brilliant members here who would be more than happy to help you out or show examples of things to help you improve. :)

Yeah that was K's game, he has a big issue with spelling and punctuation.
I'm pretty good with spelling but mediocre with punctuation.

Thanks for your input

I need it sometimes too.  Hate it when I misspell something and don't even notice and then I'm too lazy to change it lol

Damn, it has been quite awhile since i've been on here. Sorry for the mega old bump, just feel like getting some stuff off my chest.

I forgot the password for my KnMsShadowWing account, and i'm pretty sure the e-mail got closed, so i made a new account. I don't really have any proof, but i am the former starter of this post (i don't think that makes sense, but its 5AM so who cares).

I know no one was waiting in anticipation for this game, but some people said so nice things so i thought i'd get what happened off my chest.

I was about 90% done with the game, had the final dungeon and boss room made. The Mini-Boss was all coded, all that was left to do was program the final encounter, make the 2 part final boss fight, go back and do some clean up, fix whatever needs to be fixed, program the ending and maybe a credits page if i could figure that out, it was looking good. Maybe not good...it was looking OK.

Then my computer decided to up and die on me, i was able to salvage some things, but the game was lost, and i had to start all over. At that point i gave up. I'm sure if i remade everything, it may have come out better than before. But i was just out of it. I couldn't bring up the motivation to remake it and my rpgmaker days kinda died there.

It's a shame, i was having a lot of fun, but the flaws with 2k3 and my unwillingness to learn how to make things i disliked better kinda turned me off of ever opening 2k3 again. The battle system is terrible, as are the battle sprites. And don't get me started on the Battle Sprite creator. No offence to whoever made that. But it's so limiting and barely has anything of actual use.

If i had the money, i'd definitely look into one of the newer rpgmakers, although, last time i looked around, i couldn't find any good places that had free resources for the newer ones.

Anyway, just felt like letting that out. Sorry if this is against any rules or whatever, i feel really bad about bumping a really old post, i'm sure anyone who cared is probably long gone.

Sorry again, CCR.

Totally against the rules. Not.

And kinda welcome aboard the train. Those are things that teaches you to always have a backup. Lots of people feel the same way you do about 2k3 though. And I think managed to get RPGMVX and XP like 80% off or something on humble bundle so you should keep an eye out there if you ever want to get started again. Otherwise if you're into coding and non-rpgs I would suggest gamemaker. There are a couple of free/trial versions that include most but not all features that really gets the job done if you have an idea.

Yeah, I think most of us can relate, unfortunately. Losing a project can be devastating. The quality or outside opinion of it doesn't matter. It was yours and it sucks to lose.

Don't feel bad about criticizing 2k3, either. You're right, it has serious flaws that make it impractical to use as is out-of-the-box. The only reason I opened the program back up and started using it again was because a couple of bored programmers on RPGMaker.net started hacking it to bits.

The newer RPG Makers have their good qualities, and certainly a lot more can be done with them, but they too have a ton of flaws and arbitrary limits imposed on users. I was very disappointed by RPGMakerVXAce. I got it at a discounted price and I still felt ripped off. The newer Makers are unfriendly to anyone who wants to do anything besides emulate the template Enterbrain provides. Sure, you can use Ruby, it's a beautiful language and a lot has been done with it, but in the end you're still attempting to circumnavigate arbitrary limits imposed on the maker that could easily have been provided as editable options. I always felt like Enterbrain got lazy and greedy and instead of providing more functional and intuitive interfaces, they decided to throw up their hands and say, "Screw it, if you can script it in Ruby, we're not providing it as a feature, but we're still gonna charge you out the *** for sub-par graphics and music!" In other words, for your money, they're not very good game dev kits.

So there' my little rant. Also, you're banned for topic kicking.

(Just kidding) ;)

I only watched the video so far but I must say I've only ever seen two better jobs at RTP mapping and your TES system seems simple but quite effective. I like you choice for which characters to use as your mains as well. Ellis and Zack don't get near enough screen time as Alex and even the Warrior. Plus the Ninja gal XD I can only remember a handful of sprites of her and most were edits. Nobody uses the default for much. I'll have to wait to play it myself to see if it's as a fun to play as it looks.

Thanks for the kind words. What's a TES?

Sorry to say, the game was lost in a major computer crash and i haven't had the motivation to recreate it so there likely never will be a playable version.

The stuff shown in the videos were very early stages of the game, really, at first that was the game. it ended after the Elder Mitori boss shown. I just made it to test out the program, learn, mess around and stuff. Later on, i decided to try to actually make it into a game.

The last version i had was very different from what was shown in the video. New areas were added, the town was redesigned, the story was fleshed out a bit more, still kinda cliche though.

It wasn't very long. at most it probably would have taken an hour to get through, if that. sadly, it was pretty linear, if i had the knowledge and skill to make an open world game, you could bet your *** i would in a heartbeat. But it was my game, and i was happy with it.

if anyone is interested, and since i have nothing better to do, i'll go ahead and list the areas i can remember in the game from start to finish (in a spoiler to avoid taking up unnecessary space)
Windscar Island (or something stupid like that) > Silvermine Island > Goddess Grove (Dungeon) > Kenji Ruins > Kenji Tomb (Dungeon) > The Snow Village of Aurora > Ice Cave (Dungeon) > Tony's Air Ship > The Floating Island of Nevermore > The Tower of Nevermore (Dungeon) > Abyssa's Chamber (Final Boss Fight)
and yeah, that was it. fairly short game. It was supposed to be the start of something my friend Kev and i were working on called The Elemental Series. We would trade off working on games in the series, i was doing Wind, he was doing Water and Shadow (or Darkness) and we were going to collaborate on Fire.

Recently i've had the itch to get back into RPG Maker, so i'm looking into maybe getting VX, i dunno. But my friend Kev is still working with RPG Maker and has been working on a game for quite awhile, maybe i'll convince him to post his progress.

Anyway, sorry for the long post. Thanks for being really cool and all the kind words.

Aww sorry to hear you lost the demo. A TES stands for Touch Encounter System. It basically is a system that allows you to have monsters on the map using Chara sets which when bumped into will cause a random encounter to happen.
