Story
This entry within the Dragon Fantasy series takes us into the magical world of Tsufana--a place where wizards and dragons reign supreme. These lands, however, face a grave crisis: Vlad, a famed Wizard hailing from the prosperous lands of Lispen, has defected, and now wields his magics with a dark purpose. In his quest for an unfathomable dark power, he has cursed the world and its inhabitants, transforming them into monsters and various other forms of demonic entities.

You take control of two siblings from the town of Ziazu. Mysteriously surviving their hometown's collapse under Vlad's curse, they set out with help from a brave knight and a well-renowned sage to end the evil wizard's vile curse and restore peace to the land.

Characters
Falcon
"The hero of the tale. He and his sister were the only survivors when Vlad's curse overcame their hometown."

Ludia
"The Hero's sister. Well-versed in the art of black magic, and very intelligent. Her hometown was destroyed by Vlad's curse when she was a child."

Torkus
"A great Sage hailing from the town of Borez. He wields potent healing magics, and knows much about the world and its inhabitants."

Armak
"Great warrior born and raised within the fishing village of Orul. His physical power is amazing, but he lacks the know-how to cast magic."

Well, the NES-vibe has my stamp of approval.

Very nice.

How many games in this series so far? You're always posting them.

There's 7? 8? Somewhere along there. Though most of them aren't REALLY connected. They just sorta (kinda) take place in the same universe. That's why I'm doing a remake of the very first game in the series. I can actually set up some kid of solid storyline this time around instead of going all over the place like I did in the past.

Anthologies are interesting, though.
That's what I'm doing for Myrdia.
Same universe, different stories (sometimes not even in the same time period).

Well, I'm glad to announce that progress on this has increased quite a bit! And so the game is being developed at a much faster rate than it had been in the past.
My reason? The project I was directing MOST of my attention on has been placed on hiatus until I get some motivation back to work on it. My main mapper had to
leave the team, so that left me pretty bummed. Nothing that could be helped, of course, but it shot my motivation. Anyway, because of that I can now focus all my
attention on this project instead! HURRAH! Isn't that exciting? I bet it is. You KNOW you're pumped.

Anyway, I leave you with a preview video I made quite a while back. It still holds up nicely, but lacks a few new things that the current version has (like naming your characters, etc.)
Regardless it conveys the feels quite nicely.

Enjoy!

Good, good, gooooood! The more that dig it, the better. Haha. And now I'm gonna add a few more screenshots to the collection.

Exploring the world for hidden treasures. They're everywhere. Literally. There's going to be so much to do and find, and a TON of exploration to be done. I want to make it a real adventure, so the world will have much more to offer other than the main quest.

Stumbling across a hidden village tucked away in the mountains.

It was pointed out to me already that Serpent was spelled wrong. For some reason the proper spelling of that always eludes me! Gah. Anyway, this is the only shop in the game that sells relics/accessories that resist status ailments, etc.

GREAT AND HELPFUL NPCS. Where would we be without them?

Full-party battle against a group of wild monsters out in the desert! Phew. They'll certainly need a drink or two after this skirmish.

Tiny little village. Though then again, almost all of the villages and towns in this games are small. This is due to the walking speed. Also, I based the town and dungeon sizes off of those found in Dragon Warrior II.

Ok, gonna say it again, I am floored by how true to the NES 8-bit style this looks. It's great. I am curious about the music, though. How much of it is original? It sounds almost too good. I noticed the Final Fantasy fanfare (henceforth referred to as FFFF), but most of the rest sounds unfamiliar. Any chance of replacing something as iconic as that FFFF to be as passably unfamiliar-yet-great as the rest of the songs demoed?

None of the music is original, sadly. I wanted to make this game as authentic FEELING and SOUNDING as I could, so even the music is ripped directly from the Dragon Warrior games (2-4) on the NES (as are the graphics.) Not only that, but I find that it is extraordinarily hard to find a good composer for free online, so rips are my best bet. I can also go through tons and tons of songs and eventually pull together a list of songs that I like, so there's also that. Maybe in the future I may look in to getting original music for one of my projects, but I don't see that happening anytime soon! Thanks for the comment regardless, 'cause judging by your thoughts on this game I'm going down the right path!

"Arandomgamemaker" of RMN was kind enough to dedicate some of time towards writing a review for Heroes of Tsufana, and he gave it a whopping 4-out-of-5 stars! Awesome. Here's the link:

Heroes of Tsufana REVIEW (http://"http://rpgmaker.net/games/4220/reviews/2033/")

However I will also post it here for convenience's sake.

Quote
Heroes of Tsufana is a game created by Ephiam. (You probably already know that :P)
It attempts to emulate the oldschool Dragon Warrior games, and I must say it does a pretty darn good job about it.

Story: 3/5
You and you sister's town was destroyed by Vlad. The whole point of the game is to, well, defeat Vlad and bring peace back to the world.

Now, I don't really have much of a problem with these kinds of plots, but I do feel it could have been a bit more original. Still, it keeps you playing.

Graphics:5/5
They are NES Dragon Quest sprites. How could you possibly go wrong with that?

Mapping: 4/5
The way Ephiam made the mapping was to mimic the minimalistic style of Dragon Quest 1. Bearing that in mind, I think it is pretty accurate. None of the maps look ugly at all! I think the minimalist style actually compliments with this game very well.

Music:5/5
The music is also taken from Dragon Quests 1-4, which in my opinion automatically makes it awesome. However, this is the first time I've heard the soundtrack in MP3 format. That may not sound like a big deal, but MP3 format allows it to sound exactly like the original version.

Gameplay: 4/5
The battles are the traditional 2K3 ATB system. Depending on the game, this is either a good thing, or a bad thing. In this game, I think it is a good thing. The battles aren't long, boring, or slow, and they always seem enjoyable to me. I do wish that you could target multiple enemies at a time, though. It's not that big of an issue, but it does get annoying with large groups of enemies.

Gameplay outside of battle follow a pretty basic formula for the first two towns - get to town, go to dungeon, get treasure, fight boss, get out. However, as soon as you get the ship, the game opens up tremendously. In fact, it's very hard to figure out where to go next! It can be irritating, but I do like the freedom you have. Not to mention, all he treasure chests everywhere.

Replayability: 3/5
While there is a lot of stuff to do, I feel that there doesn't seem to be much of a point in replaying this game that much. Although, it does stay fun!

Pros:
-Fun, engaging battles.
-Awesome graphics and music
-Plenty to do.

Cons:
-It is a bit hard to figure out where to go.
-The story could be a bit better, but it's not that big of an issue.

Overall: 4/5

Man, I want to play this as soon as possible, but my full time job is currently games testing and I dunno if I can face it today XD It looks amazing, though. I'll try and play it this week.

i like! i watched the preview vid for a bit, the FF fanfare didnt really fit cause i knew it was from it but dragon warrior/quest didnt really have one. i noticed there was a delay of displaying the damage reduction after you take some, but its no biggie.

ill have to download one day and give this a shot! :)

I'd also be willing to help you with music if I wasn't caught up doing my own :(  Nv tried to make 8-bit soundtracks tho.

Awesome! If I'd known it's completion would interest this many people then I would have bumped it a long time ago! Sadly the game's not getting that much attention despite being my most well put-together entry in the series to date. Oh well, what can you do? =P

@Daoman: Yeah, that slow-down in the video is just because of the recording program I used. Causes a bit of lag, but it's not that important considering it doesn't appear in the actual game. Also, I'll have to keep that offer in mind! Thanks man.

Here's a look at the World Map for those of you who might have a bit of trouble with navigation upon getting your ship. I also put it on the main post on the front page as well.

Played up till getting the boat, great job so far. Really retro. Love all the hidden items like the mass-attack book for sage.

Taking a break now since my monster hunter finally arrived, will probably get back to this later.

Hey, Ephiam. I've never played any of your games, but you get a huge amount of respect from me. Hardly any people can finish a RPG Maker game, and you have built a goddamn series. That's truly awesome, dude. For real.
Title: Re: Dragon Fantasy: Heroes of Tsufana (COMPLETED GAME)
Post by: Ephiam on March 23, 2013, 11:37:28 PM
@Prpl_Mage And from here on out it will get even better! Guaranteed. If you like a bit of exploration, that is.  And yeah, I tried to cram in as much optional treasures and stuff to find as I possibly could so that getting lost could actually lead to something a little more exciting than a possible game over. Hahahaha. That and it gives a little more reason for the player to randomly explore the world instead of JUST trying to progress the game/story.
You're at the point now where the world REALLY opens up to you, so GET READY FOR SOME MAD ADVENTURIN'!

@Lucas_irineu: That's SO AWESOME to hear, man! Thanks a bunch! Hahahhaa. I guess you could say that's what happens when someone has way too much free time on their hands. But seriously, it's amazingly awesome for you to pop in here just to say that. Really appreciate it. Makes the drive to make games grow even more, and pushes my motivation up a notch! =D

Small Update!

"While the "Hard" version is still in the works, I've decided to upload a new and slightly updates version of the game for future players and those of you who MIGHT want to give it a re-download (if you've not made it very far yet and plan to, etc.)

-Made random encounter rate on the world map slightly higher.

-Fixed the event involving the town of Burg. Now you'll have to defeat the Dark Priest before having access to the un-cursed version of the town instead of being transported there regardless of having defeated the Dark Priest or not.

-OMEGA is no longer able to be fought in Lispen.

-Some music changes to take out tracks I didn't think fit.

-There was a bug where if a player left the Sunken Lispen Castle for last in their quest to obtain the Four Relics and got all of the others BEFORE going there, they wouldn't be able to obtain the Beads of Crossing from the Elder in Borez. The event would be skipped and the castle would become inaccessible."

Here is a list of changes that I've made (so far) to the upcoming "Adventurer's Edition" of Heroes of Tsufana.

-Changed Falcon, Ludia, and Torkus' MAX MP.
-Increased Armak's overall STR.
-Changed MP cost of Torkus' group-healing magics.
-Increased the amount of DMG that some of Ludia's higher-tier spells cause.
-Changed the duration of the "Stun" status to 2 turns instead of 1.
-Poison now deals 2% of MAX HP+ 3 DMG per-turn.
-Ludia no longer learns Ultima or Doomsday.
-Changed the stats on most weapons for Ludia and Armak to increase their efficiency and damage-output.
-Enemies have more EXP and G.
-Lower Encounter rate for World Map as well as some dungeons to compensate for higher difficulty.
-Increased enemy stats.
-Added extra pieces of equipment such as the Bubble Belt, Safety Ring, Demon Pin, etc.
-Ludia can learn group-targeting elemental spells after defeating their respective devils.
-Flame, Ice, Bolt, Wind, Earth, Holy and Dark Devils added as Optional Bosses that can be defeated to have Ludia learn her new spells.
-There will be a new Final Boss for players to face after besting Vladimir at his castle.
-New music.

Also, while I'm here, I suggest taking a look at Thomasstout's Let's Play of Heroes of Tsufana! As of me posting this he's made four parts out of god-knows how many. I just love seeing people do Let's Plays of RPG Maker games, especially if they're MINE! Hahaha.

But THAT'S NOT ALL! Grampaglasses (Arandomgamemaker from RMN) has almost completed a Low Level Play-through and is uploading his battles against the games (few) bosses to his channel! Check 'em out!

There MAY be more which I forgot to include in that list which I compiled quite a while ago, but that's the bulk of it.

To access the new download, simply click the "Downloads" tab and click the Adventurer's Edition from the list. (90-odd MB =X )

ENJOY! =D
