Title: Momeka's Gameboy MixCart
Post by: Momeka on March 18, 2013, 10:33:28 PM
Momeka's Gameboy MixCart

To challenge myself a bit I figured I'll give home brewing Gameboy games a try. My goal is to make a couple of arcade-ish small games which will be collected in this thread. I'll also release the source codes for each project once it's finished.

Current Project:
Hoag's Phantoms
|||||||||| 20%
Download current build v0.2 (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2123728/Hoag%20V0.2.zip)

I'm starting small with a space shoot em up. It will only have one level and a boss fight. So far the game have a menu and a player that can move around on a scrolling background. Next step will be to look up how the window layer works and set up an ui. After that I'll move on to enemies and shooting.

Note that you will need an emulator (http://bgb.bircd.org/) to play the game.

That's definitely a very nice plan. I can't wait to see what you can come up with, I love it when people create indie games for older systems.

And oh, if you don't mind the criticism, I'd greatly reduce the number of stars you have there. It feels kind of cluttered, and it'll probably get worse when you add  enemies.

Or maybe use a dimmer color.

I don't mind criticism at all. I shall see what I can do about it.

Worked a bit on the hud last night. So far it only displays the players life.

It's actually C with Gameboy developers kit (http://gbdk.sourceforge.net/).

Oooh, I didn't know that existed.
Sounds like fun :3

Haven't been able to work that much on it the last couple of days. But I added shooting last night and gonna get started on enemies sometime soon.

Also my flashcart finally arrived today and the game runs fine on the Gameboy color.

Haven't been able to test it on an original Gameboy yet since mine seems to have died after years of collecting dust.

I had no idea you could do thinks like this. Pretty cool. Make me want to remake my game for a ds flash cart now or something.

There was a person a while back who made an RPG for the DS for some sort of hacker convention contest.
As I remember, it used almost exclusively XP RTP resources.
It's also open source (http://www.liranuna.com/tales-of-dagur-sources-release/).
So that's cool.
I haven't looked at the source, though, so I don't know how coherent it is.

Updated the latest build. It now contains the hud, shooting (A button on the Gameboy) and a bit more responsive menu.

Also tested the game on a friends original Gameboy and it runs smoothly on it. Although it's a tad bit hard to see what the hell is going on.

That would be cool. Although probably a bit annoying redoing all your work.

Well the work on the shoot em up have slowed down lately as I've had my hands full with other stuff.

But I decided to join the GBJam (http://gbjam.net/) this week to see if I could manage to finish a gb game in a week. And I did! I kept
the gameplay stupid simple in case I would run into unexpected problems along the way.

Anyway here is the results:

You play as a spy as he makes his way into the enemy base to collect as much data as he can; but don't get too greedy, because he needs to get
out before the timer runs out and the enemy back up arrives.

Looks pretty cool. I'll give it a try when I have a computer again, which could take a couple weeks or a full year.

Thanks guys, the title screen is all Dominic.

Gonna see if I can make another game for  this (http://www.neoflash.com/forum/index.php/topic,7624.0.html). Not sure if I will have enough time though. Got three projects due september at work :/

So you can hack gameboy cartriges ? How? What kind of hardware? Or is it software?

I think this is what he uses.

Yeah no hacking. I'm writing it in C using GBDK, then I'll feed all the codes into an assembler and linker to get a rom file. To run it on the gameboy I just put the rom on a flash cartridge.

That...Sounds complicated.   _sweat_  So you can add whatever codes and pics you want? Sounds pretty awesome. I heard about C once. It's hard to learn right? Kinda like game maker?

Not that much more complicated than coding for something else. And yeah, it's a bit like scripting for gamemaker except it's all you do.

Wouldn't say it's that much harder than learning anything else. Just keep at it and you will get better. And there is plenty of resources online to help you out.

Maybe I'll look into it. It'd be fun to hack old Final Fantasy games. Hey is there something like that for the Game Boy Advance and DS too??  :o

Not sure if the same type of program exist but there are several hack / hex softwares out there for most games. For example there are plenty of pokemon modifiers, trainer edits and so on that are a bit more user friendly, kinda like rpgm. I made a version of pkmn emerald with only wild jigglypuffs and every area had snow.

Yeah, what purp said, you can't hack roms with GBDK.

As for developing to advance and ds, it's possible. I just haven't looked into it that much so can't tell you were to begin looking.
