Title: Character Design Sprites
Post by: Prpl_Mage on March 28, 2013, 06:12:56 PM
A part of MIC's Charas Contest (http://www.charas-project.net/forum/index.php?topic=28681.msg382481#new)

Hey all ya' weasels, Prpl is back in some of his occurring spriting. This time I was inspired by all those character models I could download in 3D, it made it so much easier to recreate the character designs. Anyway, I was kinda doing some sort of outfit changing system and such when I simply stopped and dedicated my efforts into making some sprites. Felt more entertaining at the time. And here we are.

So without spoiling the muffinly fun for y'all. Give me a post (and preferably some picture reference) and I'll make your character in this neato style. If you want to of course, you don't have to. But I bet you really want to. Like how I did like 3 years back when I created that battlechar template. Remember that one? 3 years ago.

Without further delay, here's the sprites so far. Mostly female because their outfits are a bit more interesting to make. Please note that most of them are in not-all-too covering clothes. This is not because I am a perv but rather because they are far easier to make.

Interesting. I'll def post something later for you to do. I like these, but I gotta say the shoulders on quite a few of them could use a change. Something about em bothers me.

Yeah, the shoulders are a bit too manly I suppose, looks great with armour on, less so with bare shoulders.

perv.

...as in looks good! these are actually pretty cool. shoulders and general look of stiffness are my only complaints.

There's nothing wrong with the shoulders per se. It's that actual people don't hold that pose with their arms a few a few inches from their body like that unless they're bodybuilders trying to look tough.
Title: Re: CONTEST: Character Design Sprites

Alright, I may have something. I'm always interested to see my own characters made by other people. Especially since I can't draw them well myself... so it's mostly other people "bringing them to life".

If you're up for a challenge, that is! Well, sort of... because aside for one, they would require a different base sprite...

So, first of all... Sarah C. Never enough of Sarah C.
I made her along with Murof with the intention of motivating people do try to create a mascot back when a topic about it was made. People ended up liking her.
Only pictures I have as reference are the banner I made when I created her and that "derp eyed" drawing I made a long while ago. Looking at it today... she does look kind of derpy.

Second... Cerebus, of course. Cerebus changed quite a bit since he was created. The most accurate picture of the current Cerebus would be my avatar.
And third... a little girl named Chloé. She would be a character for some horror-like stuff I had in mind. Where it will remain forever. Man I suck... anyway.
I'd only have two reference pictures. The first is a small drawing I made a while ago. Bad quality, I know. I had no scanner, so the picture was taken with a webcam. Second picture would be Lucas' incomplete interpretation of her. Everything was a while ago... but anyway.

All in spoilers because some images are slightly larger, and because only half with spoilers wouldn't be consistent. And we wouldn't want that, would we?

So yeah, feel free to accept or refuse, of course. But since you ask... you know... yeah.

I get what you're saying. They kinda have a bit of a action doll pose. Kinda wanted that to make sure that the arms would be free from torso and waist clothing.

Two requests so far, Cerebus and Dren. Anyone else? As you can see, I'm not really limiting myself to original characters here.

Always need more Sarah C.

And an update ( the first one but still).

Sarah C added, couldn't decide which style to go with so I did one that looks more like the battlechar sprite and one that looks more like the artwork.  And then I made one with the outfit she had in that one chaingame that never finished. Also, damn you Cerb for giving her such hard hair to make.

Shweet.

Yeah, after creating the banner, I decided I didn't like the revealing shirt so I changed it to some kind of tank top. I didn't remember she looked like that in the chain game, though. But I like it.
Also, I do agree about the hair myself, especially since I'm not too good of an artist. I wanted to avoid usual hair type such as the typical pigtails and ponytails or the likes and came up with this. Not too sure how this hair type is called.

I like how it turned out. I always enjoy seeing more Sarah C.

Good luck with whatever it is that this is.  :Plight:

Getting the feeling that you're my colour-opposite nemesis here. Gotta love good ol' PSO.

Great! Where do you keep them concept art for your AoA characters? Can't find it.

Nice to see another PSO fan. To be honest I wasn't expecting anyone to know what a FOmar is. I expected the usual "why are you wearing a dress" question. XD

The kid could be a problem simply because it's a kid. Cerb on the other hand shouldn't be too much trouble, some minor fixes should solve it.

Also added Perry from Apathy of Angels, I remember that guy is a beast in combat.

Also realized that the faces of these models are kind of a problem. They are a bit larger than the charset heads but still not large enough for big changes.

As I thought, Cerebus wasn't too much trouble. If, you know. It is okay with Cerebus.

Also, took the opportunity to add some simple shading to that avatar of yours.

Post by: Cerebus on May 09, 2013, 06:16:58 PM
Seeing Cerebus in this style is pretty interesting. I do like it.

However, it made me realize that... he really needs pants.
I chose this style based on Redwall, where many characters have no pants. It was during the "furry" bi-week we had. Him already being sort of a furry, I needed to make him even more furry-like, hence the style.
But no pants does look weird in less "cartoonish" and more "realistic" style. He always had pants before I drew this version anyway. He also had shoes, but I do prefer him without.
Thicker thighs was also part of the "Redwall style" I went for. If I was to chose a "canon" style, I'd go for something that looks like Worgens in WoW.

I like him, though, but I think that thinner legs and pants would suit your style more. If you do feel like going for an edit, his pants are pretty much the same colour as his vest, much like in older representation of him.

Oh and don't worry about my criticism, I do realize that "Redwall style" Cerebus is the only one I gave as reference picture. I also do realize I said it was the most accurate representation of him.

And nice shading there. I've never been good at that, no matter how easy everyone says it is. It shall replace my non-shaded avatar.

Also, I pretty much felt like Chloé would be the most problematic since it would require a completely new base model. It's cool, though. 2 out of 3, I certainly won't complain.
Title: Re: CONTEST: Character Design Sprites
Post by: Prpl_Mage on May 09, 2013, 06:47:32 PM
Second... Cerebus, of course. Cerebus changed quite a bit since he was created. The most accurate picture of the current Cerebus would be my avatar.

I read this and assumed that pantless was the new style of Cerb.

But yeah, I hear you. Critizism is only good to hear.

Do you have any picture or such of Cerb that I can use for a pants version? I kinda remembered there being a cape and pants but y'know, went with the picture.

Also, cape, no cape? tail, no tail?
Title: Re: CONTEST: Character Design Sprites
Post by: Cerebus on May 09, 2013, 07:33:03 PM
Yeah, it's just that after seeing him in a more "realistic" style, I find it's not as fitting as I thought. I suppose until I actually do something with him, there won't be an actual "accurate" representation of him. And that shall take a long, long time...

The only picture with pants I could find is my old avatar, which is barely detailed due to its size.
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c216/cerebus_x01/LordCerebus.png) (http://s28.photobucket.com/user/cerebus_x01/media/LordCerebus.png.html)

But I find that my older version of Cerebus is too "human-like". I suppose that's why I felt my current avatar was the most accurate. But I'm not so sure.
I'm very indecisive. Cerebus' constant appearance change is probably a good proof of that.
I'd say, the legs on your drawing are fine shape-wise. Perhaps just a bit thinner, and maybe slightly shorter.

I know old Cerebus didn't have a tail. But I actually like the tail on him. He also had shoes, which I prefer out.
As for the cape, he does have one. That red thing around his neck is supposed to be a rolled-up cape or something, hence why it tends to look somewhat puffy. It's rarely set loose.

So, in summary: Slightly thinner legs, pants, tail, no shoes, rolled-up/strapped/whatever cape (though the cape set loose would still be accurate).
Pants are pretty much the same colour as the vest.

Sorry if I'm annoyingly picky...

My God Cerb, you are so annoyingly picky.

Or not,

Is this any better?
Title: Re: CONTEST: Character Design Sprites
Post by: Cerebus on May 09, 2013, 08:28:31 PM
Yes, that is excellent.

While I made a mistake by saying the pants should match the vest (I meant jacket; I forgot that a vest is that small clothing you put under a suit/jacket/etc.) I must say that darker pants look better on him.

So, no edit needed, this one is great. Yay!

Sorry if I'm annoyingly apologizing...
Title: Re: CONTEST: Character Design Sprites
Post by: Prpl_Mage on May 09, 2013, 10:05:24 PM
Oh, I just assumed that when you said vest, you meant the undershirt thingy.

Glad you like it!

But now I'm all out of requests.
Title: Re: CONTEST: Character Design Sprites
Post by: Cerebus on May 10, 2013, 12:21:45 AM
Yeah, I used the wrong term. You were actually right assuming I meant that in a way, considering that IS what a vest is.

But anyway. Uhm... I suppose maybe I could request Murof. But the only picture of him is the one from the banner I made. This one would also require some edits, but it would be mainly making his arms more buffed.
Aside from that, strangely enough, I don't have any request.

Aww man! How did I not notice these till recently?? Such an awesome style! I love that "woodpaint" like palette you use. Shame I have no use for a style like that in anything practical. May take a crack at making some stuff using it though.

Hmm that could be nice to have I will admit. Could use them as very unique face sets. Hmm also I just had and inspiration of using them as "party present" indicators at the top of the screen. Shame I'm not good with pictures. =\

So yeah, 2 years later I decided to continue with this. I changed the shoulders and pose of the female model like people commented on and started doing some new ones. I also made a broader male model, unlike the female model you actually need one of those from time to time. It all started with me playing fire emblem awakening again. Then going to the spriters resource just to realize that all that 3d is making it near impossible to get your hands on graphics these days.
Anyway, enough rambling.

I'm pretty happy with the Kerrigan one. I think the colours went well. And I kinda realized that Alextraza uses the same model as Sylvana only more revealing.

I like the change in the female model.

Thanks, I think it works much better. However I feel like I should do something with the male model as well. It might be that I made the neck longer or something but they look kinda long and thin.

Yeah, they're really cool. The dice look a little odd but I guess they're really hard to get right at a small size. I wonder how it would look if, just for them, you corrected the spots a little once they were at their large size and you had more pixels to play with?

The small dice with black dots is supposed to be more square-ish while the other one is supposed to be more round dots. If that makes any sense.

Also, made some armors as well. I think the headger turned out the best though.

This looks amazing. The numbers of the yellow dice, especially the 6, sounds weird though. I think the first column of dots of the 6 face should go a bit lower, and the second column should be higher, so that the lines between two dots of the same row get parallel to the edge of the dice.

The 6th face of the dice is still a bit off though. You should move the first column of dots a bit up. I think the perspective of the lens on the telescope (is that the right term for it) is too "circular", it should be a more oval-ish. Otherwise, it all looks gorgeous :)

Made some sprites for the different classes as well. Didn't want them to have the rpg2k3 charset look so I gave them larger heads (like that was needed) inspired by bravely default and simmilar styles. I tried to make them kinda androgyny, not sure if that succeeded. Try to match the class with the correct skill from the previous picture!
