Title: Tomb Raider
Post by: Prpl_Mage on January 07, 2014, 11:51:13 PM
So yeah, I just made my thread about games I played last year. But here's the thing. Tomb Raider was such a pleasant surprise that I had to write something nice about it.

They're kinda moving away from the classic thing and at least started off being more of a survival game. I wouldn't call it a survival horror because, well. It's not very scary. Collectables, skill upgrades and improving weapons add something to a game. Although, you kinda get a bit buffed a bit into the game with more firepower than you'll ever need. But still, go team for making this game!

I've been playing it lightly, and I find it a little bothersome. The controls feel loose and uncomfortable (with a controller), and the animations sometimes look pretty awful (Lara's weird ground-scoot move). The AI responds inconsistently to stealth (sometimes they notice me for no reason, sometimes I can walk right in front of them with no issue), and when combat breaks out, their attacks are timed so I have no opportunity to counter-attack. The exploration isn't too bad, though. If the platforming wasn't so wonky (making me go places I'm not pointing towards, stumbling over ledges or getting magnetized towards stuff the game thinks I want to be on), I'd enjoy it more. There are other complaints, not too many compliments, and I'm not impressed so far (though to be fair, I'm not that far in).

Sorry to take a shit on your recommendation thread with a negative review. Opinions and such.

I thought it was good on an emotional aspect (showing how she feels about her first murder and what not).
Gameplay was good, though nothing new. Level design was ok: not bad or good.

While I was playing it the game felt really good. Looking back at it, it was pretty forgettable. Could've used a real boss fight, that's for sure.

Archem why you rain on my parade?!

Nah, you can have your opinion. I was just positively surprised that their "new start" of the series was actually good and not just big boobie fan service. I felt like the direction they took was a good decision rather than some other games out there.
And yeah, there are places where they will see you while stealthy for story reasons. Like when they torch that house on fire. Not having trouble with combat though, might be because I have far too many hours on record shooting people in the forehead over the years on my PC. I had the same problem with bioshock and deus ex, humans are so fragile.

And yeah, sometimes she's very compliant and do what you want her to do. And sometimes she'll just forget about grabbing the ropes or ledges which leads to your smooshed death. But that's video games for you.

Yeah I kinda liked the beginning of it as well, although she wasn't all that shocked about the first guy being squished by a boulder. Or that other guy getting shot. But still, maybe she had more important things to think about. Still I would've preferred if there had been some more story based killings after the first one. 'Cuz the first thing I did in the next area was to arrow a guys head and then his buddy's when he went to investigate. And we had already passed into sociopath land.

And yes, could've used a T-rex fight. Although I haven't completed it yet. So there's still hope.

I didn't comment on this aspect because of how hard it is to make an action game where you need to progress into being a cold-blooded killer. I thought that Far Cry 3 did a surprisingly good job with that, though perhaps that had to do with how being spotted led to a quick death in the early game, and leveling up is what let you develop your abilities as a killer. The motivations provided at the start of the game helped to fuel a revenge story that made the killings more justifiable from a story standpoint.
