Title: Playing with CSS...
Post by: Alex on February 06, 2014, 03:08:23 AM
Ok, are we back?
Time to tweak some stuffs a little then.

I made a couple modifications to the Forum's CSS, becasue - at least for me - it was terribly hard to read.
Actually, I made only 2, but I think they will be effective:

1st, reduced the size of the textarea on bottom for quick replies. It was causing horizontal scrollbars, now no more
2nd, I've added a think blue line between posts. For me it was just so hard to understand where a signature ended and where the next reply started! So I simply did it.

Just FYI

Is it supposed to have taken effect already? Because nothing has changed on my end.

I was wondering the same thing for a moment. The new CSS is up, but you'll have to clear your cache in order to see the changes.

I see. Much better.

Great!

I suppose it's harder to go back to the old days when posts alternated between two different backgrounds. And I believe that we fixed the quick reply box once, but it got kinda reseted when we updated something.

Oh lord, that's much better! Thanks Alex.

@Prpl
Could be. Wen we started the issue with GoDaddy, Osmose updated SMF too. Perhaps it broke something.

Will see if there will be any way to have the alternate backgrounds but yeah, in the meanwhile I can finally read clearly the replies :)

Yeah it really helps.
Would it be possible to draw another line between posts and poster?

edit: Found this

Aw dude we've needed those forever. 10/10.

Interesting bug(?). I had to sign back in to reply, and after I signed in it took me to the "About Complete Resources page problems" thread instead of this thread. That thread was not in this tab's history.

@Prpl: another line between posts and poster? you mean a vertical line?

@Razor: dunno about that bug. I know Osmose updated the forums, and what you're describing seems related to the forum coding.
Unless I can replicate there's not much I can do... however it doesn't seem anything major.

@TheWholeWorld:
I was able to have alternate colors working again, so I removed the separation line. Looks fine from here, if not on your browser please share a sshot.
ALSO.... this makes the internal anchors to specific posts working again! :)

Sweet. It's like old Charas is slowly coming back.

And I'd agree with Prpl_Mage about the line between post and poster, which would indeed be a vertical line.
Maybe post outlines in the near future? Assuming I got the right term. Like in Prpl_Mage's screenshot.

Oh God, it's like I've stepped into a time machine and returned to a simpler time where everything was right in the world.

Alex, you truly are the Master. Though it makes me wonder why we couldn't have had this change implemented sooner, given that you've shown it's doable in a brief time frame. I suppose there's something more to it than I know, given that I know nothing about programming.

Oh man, this is glorious now. Alternating colours is the best.

It's just like when I was in high school and depressed!

In years I became better at a number of things, fortunately CSS is one of those :)

However, I don't think I have good news for the vertical line between poster and post. The sshot Prpl found was using tables, and that line was just the table border itself.
Here layout is slightly different (tableless), but in any case I have the feeling a vertical line would look.... "strange".
It may be me, but don't you feel poster and post separated enough already? To me it looks pretty fine.

You might be right.

How about a border between background and posts then? the dark post background is the same as the overall background, and I just can't figure out what it used to look like before

What about now?
I've added a light gray border around all posts

I think I preferred it without, it even encased all the other stuff in the forum.

Maybe we could just slightly alter the colour background of the dark posts to a slightly lighter shade instead.

Okay, bad colour. Something more like the background only slightly brighter. Like #00002E or something.
