Welcome to Charas Game club; a month long game jam.

From Friday the 13th of June to Sunday the 6th of July we'll be jamming up games. You won't have to spend the whole month jamming if you don't feel like it or don't have time. Take a week, weekend, day, hour or minute.
There won't be any limit to the number of games you can submit; make a deep rich rpg maker game or a series of small high score based mini-games, it's all up to you.

Once the month is up I figured we could take all the finished games and create Charas Game Bundle (#1). We'll take a screenshots write a sentence or two about each games and post them with download link as a news post on the main site. (Haven't checked this with mods/admins but hope it won't be a problem).

Feel free to use whatever you like to make your game. It's okay to reuse code, graphics and other resources you made in the past (and other peoples resources as long as you have their permission). Heck, if you got an old unfinished game lying around feel free to dust it off and finish it now.

As any good jam we will be having a theme. Following the theme won't be strictly enforced feel free to do your awesome game idea or finish up that old game project without having to cram in the theme. It's there for inspiration and sparking ideas.
The theme:
History

If you need some inspirations/motivations/something to watch while eating here some talks about making games:
Why Being Poor and Having No Budget is Good For Making Game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwXFOgNVMww#t=29)
The 4 hour game design (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgwlJu8Ql2o)  Part 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq2sz5715AY)  Part 3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYhIvHQ_Wp0)
Juice it or lose it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy0aCDmgnxg)

So lets have some fun and make some games! Also feel free to post screenshots, progress reports etc. in this thread as the jam goes on to keep it interesting.

(Also posting it in All of all instead of the contest board cause do anyone really check those boards anymore?)

Sounds good! Sign me up. I still got that Infection RI game I was working on using AS3, I'll re-develop it in Unity using the 2D options to both make a game and learn how to work in it!

I just started learning how to use Unity, so if I can use that, I'm totally down.

Man Unity is great for stuff like this, do it.

I'm still in the process of making my game. Once I finish I'd love to join in on this jam.

Okay so the contest thingy is on. History is the theme and I failed to make gravity in gamemaker once more.

I've never completed a game... I might try this time though, if I have a time limit, I might actually get around to it.

Awesome seeing such a huge turnout. Today it begins, I'll get started on my project tonight.

I just started learning how to use Unity, so if I can use that, I'm totally down.

Go for it, I'll be using Unity as well.

Noob question, but: what's a good source for VX ace tilesets? The Steam workshop is pretty dry.

I'm in, which is annoying because I already have a platformer on the go but I'll try and make something...

EDIT: Oh, saw the 'dust off' thing : p Yeah I'll make a polished version of what I have so far with my platformer! That'll be fun!

Darn it looks like I'm going to miss out. I would do one, but maaan...the Chain Game has me sapped of any game making energy other than tiny little modifications to code. @-@ Ah it's likely not work out anyway. I would have done a Charas Pre-History game XD And had it based on my own ideas. Ah well.

Just curious if people are working on games for this? The thread has been kinda dead and I've been busy with some unexpected overtime at work, so haven't had that much time to put in the game as I wanted. But if people are working on stuff I'll defiantly have something finished for the deadline.

I definitely will as I'm planning to just submit what I have so far of my platformer. I want to add some more stuff to it before the deadline but I also have a RP to start on thursday that I've been preparing for... so I might have a good solid saturday on it or something, sounds good.

Yeah but my progress kinda slowed down when the steam sale began. So I'll have to cut down on some of the contents and settle for playable if I'm gonna finish in time.

Well, this is embarrassing but I suck. Was going to jam my game finished this weekend but ended up traveling instead and could't put that much time into it.
So I don't have a game and no one else have submitted a game so I'm thinking about extending the deadline to next Sunday. Would people be down with that or have everyone finished their game but just not submitted it yet?
Title: Re: Charas Game Club
Post by: Prpl_Mage on July 06, 2014, 07:48:04 PM
Um, well... It's not quite a finished product yet. I could probably tweak a thing here and there and submit it. But I just assumed that I would have until the end of the 6th to work on it, and then I added American time (because hey, that gives me like 7 more hours to work on it) so I haven't really stressed enough.

So yes, extend the deadline 1 week. But no more than one week or this might be dragged out.

Yeah, the deadline is the end of the day local time, might have forgotten to mention that. But yeah, no more extension, let's not turn this into a year development :P

I was just about to submit what I have late but I see it's been extended. Phew! : p

Well, I'm just not meant to make games I guess. Yesterday I slipped up with a cheese slicer and cut up my thumb which have made working a pain in the ***. And don't have enough to release anything interesting, so I'm out I guess.

Sorry to hear that. That happened to me once, hurts like hell. Or well it bleeds like hell. The curse of gamemaking continues.

I will release my thing later today(-night?), I hope someone else does as well.
Otherwise the inevitable extension might be neccessary

Well I really want to finish my game for this but I'd hate to delay it even further and really unsure how much free time I will have the coming week.

As far as I know it's you and moose that got something for this, so I let you guys decide. But I think it's probably better to finish this.

Since Moose haven't replied yet I'll hold another day before I post a link.
But last day is tomorrow

Okay, still no Moose so I might as well just post my link now.

I used an old gamemaker project I worked on back in 2011 or earlier. The plan was to make some sort of survival / RTS / collecting crossover. However the whole deal with controlling units and them being able to perform easy tasks proved to be troublesome.
So I went back to the more adventury setting of the original project and built on that. Adding some much needed tweaks and improvements. So I planned on making it more story driven and add a city and shops and equipments and skill trees and stuff. But then I put too much time on the boss battles and their animations (to be honest I have no idea where all that time went, all of a sudden it was like 8 pm and I hadn't had dinner yet). Skipping ahead, time ran out like yesterday or so. So I skipped the final dungeon and the stuff in there and settled for the 4 dungeons I had managed to pull off.

It's difficult as hell. Most likely my fault as always.

I liked the idea of using three different spells, would've loved it more if they did some different attacks on the enemy. I think the hardest part for me were the controls, I'm not used to working with space, enter and shift too much in the way you incorporated it.

Yes that was the idea to begin with. More environmental objects to use to create effects as well.

Do you think it would've been better if space did the job of enter as well? And that pressing the magic key again during spell cast cancels it?

Sorry all. The last few days I've been very busy.  I've not been in a great mood either : (

https://app.box.com/s/ygoo2gjv39hchtsp78wl (https://app.box.com/s/ygoo2gjv39hchtsp78wl)

That's what I have of my platformer so far. It's nice and small filesize wise as it has no sound at the moment.

The controls are:

MOVE, JUMP AND CROUCH: Arrow keys
CONFIRM/ACTION BUTTON: X
DECLINE/EXIT BUTTON: Z
SHOOT: C (Once you get a weapon)

If you make it up the ladder (Which has no climbing animation) then you've won what I made so far.

Sorry I wasn't able to polish this into a proper demo. Just had no time for personal things recently : /

Perhaps that might work, try it out if you want to.

I dig your game Moose, that part with the computer at the start gave it a 10/10. And yes, made it to the ladder without a climbing animation, and if you right at the top you fall down and die.

Great work though. Let me know when it's finished.

Sure, why not!

I would be down to do this again sometime. I will probably set a shorter deadline. Also I'm thinking if we do another one and do the whole Charas Game Bundle we can add these games to that one.

Also purple you're game crashed when I tried to cast a spell, I'll try it again later and check if I can progress further.
Moose nice platformer (I reached the end) you should defiantly continue working on it.

Do you remember what enemy you were fighting? 'cuz I sounds like I missed a safety on one of them. They were trying to move towards the hero X and Y, but since you're casting magic, the hero X and Y don't exist. Most enemies just have an else case for this however that sees if any hero are present on the map- but I must've missed one.
