Title: Beginning Of The End
Post by: Rahl on October 11, 2014, 01:58:28 AM
(http://rpgmaker.net/media/content/games/6911/screenshots/title.png)

The Game:

This game was inspired by other survival games I've played over the last few years but have been lacking in some way. In "Beginning of the End" you wont fight dragons, save princesses, or save the world. Indeed the world is already dead, all remnants of society vanished and hungry subterranean creatures surface to pray on the weak.

Game Features:
Crafting
Fishing
Mining
Woodcutting
Tool Durability
Gathering
Planting
Firebuilding
Day/Night Cycle
Increasingly Difficult Enemies
Hunger
Thirst
Stamina
Non Vanilla RPGM battle system
Savaging
Repopulating Resources
SKill System

Features in development:
Radiation
Armor Durability
Weapon Durability
Game Mechanic Balancing
More Craftable Items
More Craftable Weapons & Armor
Salvageable only Weapons & Armor
Building Blocks
Craftable Beds for Better Rest With Less Penalty
Boss Monsters
Stamina Boosting Items
Drugs That Give Buffs & Debuffs
Schematics For Craftable Items
Larger Area For Exploration

About The Demo:

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The demo compromises of all the features already implemented, resource spawn rate has been increased greatly for the purposes of this demo so that the crafting system can be ironed out, and to make sure that the resources are working properly. The area is small in comparison to what the actual game will be and is definitely subject to change in style. Many graphics are placeholders especially when it comes to the character sprite, monster sprites, and animations. Warning: I know it can be tempting to harvest berry seeds and plant them in entrances to abandoned buildings and such however this is not a good idea, the spawning system for the monsters has been developed with this in mind and will quickly find you a game over. Monsters get more dangerous over time and so must you but crafting a way to get clean water and food must be priority.

Help:

Controls:

Shift: Attack
X: Menu
Z: Select

Info:

I'm quite proud of this tech demo, it has taken many hours to script and the planting/ building which I am most proud of system is coded through the maker without the use of scripting. You may only have 10 crops planted at any one time for the time being though this may be changed in the future.

You may sleep to regain stamina though it will drain your hunger and thirst by doing so. Zero hunger or thirst will slowly drain your health and sleeping with zero hunger or thirst will drain a chunk of health. Having 80% or more thirst and hunger will give you the energized buff which will allow you to slowly recover health. You regain Stamina slowly over time regardless of your condition. Drinking or eating unprepared food or water will likely end in poison which will fade in time.

The more you do things like fishing, cutting, and mining the more proficient you will become at that skill and the less you will fail at it in the future. Gathering rock does not require a pick though a pick does increase the chance of success. Cooking requires a fire which is a skill that can be found in the create menu with planting. Crafting is also done in the skill menu. Tools must be "equipped" to be used.

Other Thoughts:

Questions and feedback are greatly appreciated, this game will be updated regularly. And any comments regarding balancing (not resource respawn rate) will be taken into great consideration as this is what the game needs most right now.

Cool! Reminds me of Minecraft but 3D with some stuff from Fallout. I'll play it when I get time, Lord Rahl!

"Master Rahl guide us. Master Rahl teach us."

I can't believe I never realized your name might be a reference to legend of the seeker.

Also this looks great, me and my brother have been playing 7 Days to Die lately and this kinda sounds like it . Except the lack of zombies. Also, you mentioned that you're not using the Vanilla battle system, what are you using instead. Fun fact though. when Momeka posted his "Spooky game contest" my first idea was to make something like this.

Also, on a different note, what are the requirements to play a VX game? Like software and so.

Aha! So you are a fan of The Sword of Truth Series adaptations.  ;D I shall give you my report soon, Lord Rahl. *Salutes you*

Actually its a reference to the "Sword of Truth" series which was an inspiration for legend of the seeker but has little to do with it in all honesty. The series is wonderful but does not come close to doing the books justice.

The battle system is ABS (I think that is the term for it). There is no battle screen fighting takes place on the map. Its like my old Survive game in that respect but deeper, enemies are not 1 hit kills, they have random amounts of heath depending on the amount of time played.

VX actually complies the game into an exe which extracts into a folder of your choice but does not require VX to play.

------------------EDIT-------------------------------------------

Also: if you do not have VX it does require the RTP version, I have uploaded the version with the RTP and the dowload link on the first post has been changed. Please download the new version, its bigger but not huge.

Hey guys just an update, smaller version is now available in the download section for faster downloads. And I've switched file sharing providers so the issue with malicious warnings aren't a problem anymore.

Wha?! You mean you're a fan of those books too?? Gosh I started reading them after I got heavily into the series, but didn't quite make the connection. Heh funny cause I've always wanted to use the joke "Lord Rahl" on you but never quite could find a reason to in the past. Interesting. Either way looks fun I'll have to try it after all I'm a fan of Mad Max and Terraria and it reminds me of a fantasy version of both. I have a question though. Is it open ended or does it have story? Actually make that two. Can I pick my player's appearance?

Question 1: Its just a survive as long as you can atm, I may add journal entries of some sort in the future to add some background lore, but for the most part it will be a survive as long as you can type of game like some of my other games.

Question 2: Right now there is a place holder character sprite, but I do plan on letting you pick a sprite in the future. I'm honestly not a big fan of the VX sprites so it will be a near future change.

Also I've been reading the SOT books since around 2001. My favorite is "Faith of the Fallen" and the main series is pretty much my favorite thing in the world, though I care less for the new spinnoff Goodkind has produced in the last couple of years, but "The Law of Nines" was good I have to admit.

Yeah I knew it was based on Sword of Truth, never seen the book anywhere though.

Ah cool, so kinda like the old zeldas and sword of mana?

And it sounds like VX is doing it like 2k3 does, do you have the option to include the RTP as well?

Look for Wizard' First Rule its the first and second best book in my opinion. I have it in English and Dutch I've seen them in Europe so I know they are everywhere.

Aye

Yes, the current download link includes the parts of the RTP you will need to run the game. And VX is very similar to 2k3 it just has more functionality like Self switches. Each event has a self switch which allows for cutting down on tons of world switches and alot more copy/paste potential.

Yeah, I agree the font is hard to read.

Looks interesting though, I got a weak spot for post apocalypse.

Okay I played it great job there. Crafting is done pretty smoothly, maybe place sleep on the ground in the same skill tab as plant berry and fireplace though. Felt a bit odd that it was there all by itself. I think you're really onto something with this project, can't wait to see what it will look like with less RTP and more postapocalyptic stuff.

Some things I noticed. The tooltip for create a fire appears broken to me. But I got the gist of it. I couldn't create an iron pickaxe, despite having the required materials. The tooltip for hammer creation says I need 3 logs, iron ingots, striker and log, I guess the last log appeared there by mistake.

As you mentioned the respawn rate is slightly too good. And well, I suggest that the same resources don't spawn on the same location each time. Perhaps throw in a random of 1-3 so that the iron can spawn at 3 different locations or so. 'Cuz I ended up just standing there where the iron is and press my spacebar over and over.

Maybe you need to add some way to increase health, I got food poisoning from drinking the water because it takes a while to get pure water and then I was down at 18hp before I knew it and couldn't really make that number go up.
Maybe some way to show how much food and thirst items increase, 'cuz right now when you use those you get to see the hero's hp and mp bar and that's not very useful.
Also, maybe you need to clarify what items will be consumed on crafting and what won't. For example, after you craft a striker you don't need to craft another one. It is just required that you own one when you craft. I made two, and I didn't really need the other one.
Maybe make it so that you need the fireplace to make pure water as well. It makes sense that you need fire to cook.
Also, maybe you should limit forging iron ingots to fireplaces as well. For realism.
I mostly ran from enemies because of my low health but do you need to craft the bow or so to actually fight?

Should say "Make a fire for cooking. Log + Striker"

I had planned to do more in this skill catagory.

In the actual release the respawn for these resources will be at a muuuch slower rate, the map will be pretty massive and these nodes will be randomly placed throughout the map and the slowness at which they respawn will force players to move on.

The Hunger/Thirst numbers are actually in the status screen. I had considered giving each item that restores an amount in thier descriptions and I likely will for the next version.

Health is restored over time by keeping both your hunger and thirst above 80%. I'm considering bumping some health during sleep as long as your thirst and hunger are not 0. Also bandages and pain killers will be a health boost in furture patches. You can craft bandages with plant fibers and you can craft painkillers with certain plant extracts.

Yeah the striker needs clarification but I'm unsure how to do it, maybe in its description.

Quote
Also, maybe you should limit forging iron ingots to fireplaces as well. For realism.

This is what I was considering, though I was unsure if people would rather be able to craft it on the go because it does consume the same resources as a fire without having to make one.

Yes I feel pretty stupid for not explaining that you have to press shift to attack... You can attack with barefists, knife, and bow at the moment.

Also on another note, I am working on getting some postapocolyptic tilesets for this. I'm editing and even making some myself but otherwise they seem a bit few and far between when I'm looking around on the net. If you guys have any recommendations I would love to see them and I may edit some parts in.

Oh I meant that the sleep on the ground was broken, my bad. Sounds like you have a good plan for this though. I'll be happy to try it out once you've progressed.

Also, if you increase the map size, will you also add a minimap or a simpler world map?
Title: Re: Beginning Of The End
Post by: Rahl on October 19, 2014, 08:17:53 AM
How is it broken? If you mean it crashes you may have downloaded the earlier version that didn't include a piece of BGM that I forgot to put into the RTP. The new DL link has the working version.

Oh and yes I had not thought about  minimap, it could be possible I suppose I've seen a few tutorials on how to do it and there might be some scripts out there to save me some pain. I'll have to look around.
Title: Re: Beginning Of The End
Post by: Prpl_Mage on October 19, 2014, 01:13:07 PM
"Regain some stamina by sleeping where you where [] you are with no bed" is the tooltip for sleep on the ground. I meant the tooltip

Also, I realized that the only reason I couldn't craft the iron pickaxe and axe was because of the font in the game. I mistook that 6 for a 3.
Title: Re: Beginning Of The End
Post by: Rahl on October 20, 2014, 06:52:15 AM
Yes working on changing the font, that seems to be a common recommendation.

I liked the game, but I find myself wandering aroudn collecting things mostly and not doing allot of surviving. Where's the monsters or environmental dangers? Other than that I am quite impressed with all the custom codes, specifically that crafting system! Very simplistic and easy to use. I am curious as to why a little strobbing light sometimes follows me around. <.< What's that thing's purpose? Post Apocalyptic Navi? XD
Title: Re: Beginning Of The End
Post by: Rahl on October 24, 2014, 04:44:32 AM
I'm not sure what strobe light your talking about? Care to screenshot for me? It may be one of the monster, the code is designed so that every few minute or so the monster events will jump to you and then run around randomly very fast so they don't spawn on you, that way if you blockade yourself inside a house for example they all spawn in the house with you :) . I haven't added enviromental dangers just yet, the monsters spawn randomly at either 1-3-5 at a time (greater chance of spawning at night, and stronger over time), and there is a random process that despawns them after a minute or more so you can't just leave them behind. If you want I can upload the next version without encryption and you can view the coding yourself. I'm very proud of it, especially the planting/building system I'm not sure I've ever seen a rpgm game where your could build anywhere there is a passable tile.

Oh and the monsters do flash red when they die and that's possibly the only strobing I can think of.

Can anyone suggest a post-apocalyptic tileset that I can edit into the one that I'm working on?

Post by: Rahl on October 31, 2014, 10:11:50 AM
So I've decided to rework my entire tileset from the ground up adding in a lot my own hand drawn tiles. I know the quality in the pictures is mismatched but I'm working on redoing everything. So far I have redone the grounf tiles, water tiles, sticks, trees, gave markers, fences, the  stone cross some sprouting grass, got rid of entire grass patches altogether, it seemed a bit wierd to transition honestly. Here are some comparisons:

Old:

New:

I think I prefer the new ones, but I wanted to see what you guys think. I don't think I'm very great at spriting but I think these are ok. Oh and also chnged the look of the main character.

Yeah the new tiles look good, but you should try to get some pavement/ bricks into it as well. Maybe some more rocky looking patches and some dry grass and it's gonna be swell.

Also, for your gravemarkers, try to add a little something to the bottom of them so it looks like they are stuck in the ground rather than lying on top of it.  Maybe some dirt mounds or some holes for the actual graves as well.

Here is an updated look for the game, the dead cars were ripped from another tileset but pretty much everything else except the walls were drawn by me. The furnace you see there already has a working animation. The rocks rocks you see are rocks and iron ores retextured. There is a berry bush and cotton plants. I also ripped the shelves but retextured them to be lootable and show that they have been looted afterward. I'm trying to decide if I have to do a complete retexture of the walls for a better fit, I don't really want to have to so please let me know if you think they are looking ok as is. Again this is my first hand at spriting any tileset so its a bit off but I like it pretty well.

---------------------------------------Old ---------------------------------------

With working so much lately most of what I've been able to do is draw out some of the tileset, but I have changes in mind for the mechanics. Most of it revolving around the ability to smelt and adding more loot and usable items. Again this isn't the finished product, I am going to be coding for a while to come on all of the non map related content before it gets to mapping, but once I have it all there it will be mostly a matter of copy/pasting events, but they have to be perfected first.
Title: Re: Beginning Of The End
Post by: Prpl_Mage on November 25, 2014, 10:15:58 PM
Well if that is your first time doing a tileset then I'm gonna bow to you 'cuz it looks great.

One thing that I noticed is that you use pretty hard edges on your objects, by that I mean that you use a dark black for the outline, I think the objects would fit better with the lower layer if you change that. Like, change all the outlines to match the darkest colour of the walls. Maybe reduce the saturation of the brown as well to look more like the bookscase.
Title: Re: Beginning Of The End
Post by: Rahl on November 25, 2014, 11:54:18 PM
Coll I will try that.

Also this is what I've done today. I've added some road textures and gravel textures which I'm pretty proud of that really gives it alot more depth. Really starting to dig it. Let me know what you think.

EDIT:

Also I've retextured the furniture like you said purple:

Beginning of the End V0.3 Release!

Hey guys big update today, I've released a new version of my game with improvements but the biggest part is the graphics overhaul most of which I have done myself, so I really want to know what you think. Keep in mind there are still "some" vanilla textures left but most have been thrown out.

V0.3 Changelog:

This is going to feel quite a bit different from the first time if you were able to test it. Please download and let me know what you think! The new download link will also be posted on the front page.

Update:

Ok so I realise no one is really looking to help me test my game but I'm still going to be doing updates so here is one the (imo) coolest updates I've came up with so far. New starting characters with bios and unique stats. They have both advantages and disadvantages. For example Tomas. is old but experienced and hard working he gets all iron crafting recipes and extra stamina while his age limits his health. Blake is smart and learns skills faster but is weak in a fight. I may add more characters in the future but this is a good round balanced set of starters for now.

Hoping to have a new downloadable demo soon with the new characters and thier skills implemented. Again I would really enjoy some feedback but I understand that it is the holidays.

Ok so, here comes version 0.4.

This version includes all of the previous changes stated above as well as:

Really looking forward to getting some feedback on some of the latest updates. Has been hard to keep the momentum going with the project as the hype seems to have hit a low. Any feedback is appreciated. I feel like I am getting close to the finished product as once I get this tech demo ironed out the map will be blown up exponentially, resources will be much more sparse and survival will really become the name of the game.

Here the download for V0.4, I will alos be putting it on hte first page.

I think I may just leave the mechanics as is, maybe add a couple more things. But the hype seems at an all time low currently and I think I might be ready to start mapping out the full game and release 1.0 for the Chara's archives...

Ok guys, I've decided to soldier on with this. And man do I have some pretty awesome changes. First off I have completely revamped the entire crafting system, I decided to stop doing it the hard way and make it easy for the player in the process. I've found some actual script for the game that allows for much easier crafting, you can see every item you are able to craft in a custom crafting window, as well as all the ingredients needed for the craft, how many of those ingredients you have, how many possible of that item you can craft and the ability to craft multiples of an item at once!

Also the way that crafting is called is now different, you have to push "C" to bring up the general crafting tab that doesn't require a station. There are now 3 crafting stations: A Furnace (Iron Bars, Purified water), an Anvil (All Iron Products), and a  Loom (All cloth items).

Fishing can now only be done in certain spot in the water where you see movement, and has a respawn system like plants so you can't just sit there and farm fish.

A new weather system has been added to the game, where it will randomly either rain or storm.

I've added a bunch of new textures including more furniture, and modified old ones that feel more immersive. Some of the new textures have purposes such as sinks and water spikets  that allow you collect dirty water as well as spikes that do damage to you if you walk over them.

I'm going to keep it up with this project, and I'm going to release a V0.5 soon with the new features and whatever else I can think up in the meantime. Let me know what you guys would like to see in this game and I'll try to work it in. Here's some screens of the new features:

Sounds like quite the update. I'll just wait for this new version then instead of stressing to play the last one. Keep it up

I've added a map feature that can be brought up with the "S" key, on the map there is a red cursor that shows you where you are on the map.

I'm considering either make the map a rare lootable item in game, where to get the cursor you need to find a old GPS device that may or may not have a battery life in which case you would have to find new ones, which will also work with a flashlight that is currently in game. I'm undecided on this though. Let me know what you think.

And yes I plan on having the black area filled with map after the tech has been worked out and V1.0 is released.

These are cool and all, but why are there no girls?  :o I mean most guys like playing as a guy, but me I even play Pokemon as a girl most of the time. I like female characters. And don't most gamers who use an outfit changing system say "if I have to play dress up I'd rather dress up a girl"? Other than that? Pretty fun looking. I'll wait till you update again to DL.

I like the idea with the map and the fact that the cursor isn't there by default. Makes for a better survival game like that.

Played the demo and gotta say I love the fact using RPG maker 2003 graphics makes you look so much smaller than everything! o.O Just makes the levels more impressive. Like the character selection too but I agree with Zoltar that it's a bit of a sausage fest. At least add two playable chicks.

Edit: Also the idea of a map is a great add on. Necessary in exploration games. ^_- Kudos to you for bothering to research how to make one. Most VX users don't seem to even on the  more impressive games. At least the one's I've played. <.<

Well to be honest I had give up on this for a while. But do to extra time on my hands and some more survival inspiration I have picked it up again and I am finally back to where I left off with a few minor changes.

The map is now a skill that is acquire when found in the world and is listed under actions and the fire now has its own crafting system.

It was a lot of work getting back to this point but I'm feeling really motivated again and I've got some cool new ideas for how players can trick out their bases. Right now fires torches and flashlights are your only sources of light at night. And it does get very dark. I'm planning on implementing generators the power devices like lights electronic furnaces, water purification systems, defenses, maybe sprinkler systems that increase the rate plants grow among other things, though the generator will only power things within a certain radious of itself and requires fuel harvested from abandoned gas pumps.

I've spent a ton of time working on how looting will work as well as creating, organizing, and categorizing loot charts.Times now have rarity and the chances of finding rarer items are less depending on how rare they are. You can also no longer find duplicate recipes so this removes useless items that were being found in chests. Medical items will now be found in med kits spread across the map.

The new playable demo should be out in a few days.

Well Niel is a girl lol.

I can't wait to give that crafting system a shot!

Yeah I really love it. It requires me to do a lot of item cataloging and some actual scripting but its a lot more user friendly than what I had before. I thinking I'll release the new demo right after I implement the new lockpick system. I'm hoping to make a minigame out of it but I haven't decided how just yet.

Great improvements there!
I think I missed the post that said that the crafting window was on the "W" key though. I think I read C way back but that didn't work.
And yes, the nights are really dark, especially when its' raining at the same time.
Speaking of water, how do you make water containers? I had to drink the murky water and get poisoned.

Still, great job. I can't wait to see what else you have in store.

They should be in the crafting list for all new characters. I'll take a look at it when I get home tonight. They should just be one log to make. I'm going to add rain catcher station for fresh water collection in the next patch.
