Title: RPG Maker
Post by: GhostClown on March 20, 2015, 06:15:32 PM
Admittedly, I've used RPG Maker 2K throughout my game making history. It's my favorite and I still use it to this day (albeit, 2K3 is superior). Despite the nostalgic aspect, I revere it as a solid program. That, and the fact that the battle system for 2K3 never fit into my style correctly.

On a personal level, I feel that your XPs and your VXs are slightly redundant. At a certain point, you're not worried about those lovely restrictions that your older programs gifted to you (see--http://www.pixeljoint.com/). At a certain point, given all of the back-end outputs that VX and XP offered (Pearl, as a prime example), weren't we all supposed to just...move on?

Maybe it's been time to move onto actual game-making. Put down your coloring book and pick up a pencil to draw your own damn lines. Afterwards, you can color. But don't just color, color with passion. At that point, coloring with passion is easy, because you made the lines. After the first stages of RPG Maker, should we move onto serious platforms, with actual scripting and development? Something as simple as mobile come into mind.

On another hand, RPG Maker is the best stepping stone I've found to date. It's easy and delightfully fun. Maybe we require these advancing versions to slowly ease us into the abyss of "actual" game-making. Or, if we're even interested in that at all. Maybe it's all a time sink that we enjoy.

What are your thoughts? Which RPG Maker version do you use? Which did you start on?

I started out with rpgm2003 around 2004, my cousin got it somehow. My first game used resources from pretty much anything. Zelda, final fantasy etc.
When Xp came out I wasn't really interested because of the battle system.
When VX came out I was pretty much surprised what they wanted to charge me for it.
I got both of them on a humble bundle sale though.

I've just had a stick in the mud 'Know how to use it, don't want to change' thing with rm2k3. I prefer using flash for serious things, so rpgmaker is more good for fun things that are quicker to make (comparatively)

Oh yeah that reminds me, gamemaker. Very useful when you want to make something that isn't an rpg with databased objects and such making life much easier. Got some drag and drop commands but also scripts.

I kind of agree. I'm still using rm2k3, but I'm learning some actual coding languages on the side. I stopped using 2k3 for a few years and only got back into recently to try and finish a project of mine. But after this, I will never use rm2k3 again. I understand the complaints with XP and VX but the reality is, ruby is a great stepping stone for advancing into more complex languages and if people put their minds to it they can accomplish everything and more with VX/Ace, including more minimalist or low-res games. Or, an even better suggestion, move on to better dev kits.

The truth though is I don't give a **** what people choose to sink their time into. There have been some amazing indie games made on every version of the RPG Maker series... except maybe RM95. In the end, making games is a hobby and it shouldn't matter what platform the game was developed on or why, as long as it's fun or achieves its end goal, whatever that may be.

RPG maker 2003 is my favorite platform cause I don't have any really ambitious projects. Just fun games like Zoltar: Some Kind of Story and Burns Who, which is in way like Doctor Who.  ::) But I have to admit if Game Maker had more pre-written scripts I'd love to try and make some stuff for it. I also used RPG maker 20XX and thought it has more computing power, but was too hard to wield.  _sweat_

RPG 20xx is a fantastic piece of software. I definitely want to do something with it in the future.

I'm pretty sure I started with 2000 but moved on to 2003 pretty fast. I did try xp but didn't like the lack of restriction, felt like it was harder to do content that fitted in with the rest.

These days I'm usually working in Unity or just straight up programming. I did get back a bit into 2003 again with the last Chain Game and I had a blast with it. Since then I've started up some projects in it but they haven't gone anywhere.
Now I'm mostly programming in C for the game boy stuff but I really want to get back into C++. Been ages since I used it and I want to refresh my memory of it.

I just don't have the time to put into learning programming languages.  I've tried XP, and VX - but I found that even using pre-made scripts, I had difficult making graphics for them.  The graphical limitations in 2k3 are a godsend because then I don't get overly complicated and bum myself out.  I really don't see myself moving from 2k3 any time soon.  (Unless its to one of the start up projects that are set up exactly the same way like easyrpg, etc.)

The limited control over resolution in VX and XP is a huge complaint of mine. You can make pseudo low-res graphics but it is a lot of extra work. I really recommend people look into RM20xx (http://rpgmaker.net/games/2664/). It is still a WIP but it's a very promising project and will almost certainly replace rm2k/3 when it's completed. Asides from what the program can do(Which is everything rm2k/3 can do and more), it exports projects as stand-alone executables that will be viable pieces of software going into the future, whereas Windows 7/8 have already given rm2k/3 a lot of trouble.
