Title: Cursed.....I must be cursed.
Post by: Fisherson on July 06, 2015, 05:55:41 PM
So in case you haven't been to Misadventure's thread recently? My PC broke for good in the middle of fixing the darned demo....Sigh. Is it just me or should I get out of game design? I mean it makes me happy but if sky diving made you happy and your cords kept breaking and you only just managed to avoid hitting the ground and dying you'd give up right? I mean the Dentverse is a love of mine but it's mostly mine...Nobody really cares do they? I mean here people want warped right? But I'm not sure I can give anybody what they want cause my vision keeps changing the more of an experienced writer I become and sometimes I wonder if I'll ever release the game that makes your eyes light up just as much as mine when a purple haired guy uses a laser sword to cross blades with the reincarnation of Al Gore or when a twinkie munching merc unfolds his plasma lance and hits himself in the jaw and the fairy-like bad guy laughs his *** off. I just wanna do that so bad!! I want to show you not only my vision but bring you into a world like nothing you've ever seen before but so many fracking things beyond my control try to knock me back down every time I try to get my foot in the door. Maybe this is the one tale in which the farm boy from the backwater world can't defeat the great darkness that tries to oppress his life?

Do what makes you happy, and disregard what others think. You only need to try to please people with your work if it's for monetary gain, so just try to please yourself.

I can pretty much guarantee all creative types have far more projects that never go public than those that do. You do it cuz you want to and thats that.

Also, bakup yo stuff! You might still be able to salvage your project from your computer's hard drive. So not all is lost

You obviously enjoy working on this, so keep doing it :) It's nice if other people are pleased by it, but it's more important that you please yourself first.

In terms of backing up, I recommend using GitHub. It's mainly for software developers, but can be used with any project. Essentially you add your project to a git project, then any time you make progress such as making a cut scene or whatever, you commit your changes and push them to GitHub. The awesome part is that it will keep track of all of your changes, so if you made changes to a map that you don't like, you can revert that map to any previous commit. It's also on the cloud so you never need to worry about your computer blowing up. It's also free, but in the free version people can see your files and can download them, but cannot make changes to them unless you grant them permission to do so. You'd have to pay a few dollars a month to make your github project private.

Dragonblaze, I can add one up there and advice using Gitlab. Works the same as GitHub but it's free for private repositories.

GitLab is also awesome, it's what I use at work actually. I didn't know you could use it for free though.
