Title: Windows 10
Post by: Razor on July 13, 2015, 12:54:19 PM
So as you may know, unless you're hardcore (Linux or something) or a lesser human being (Mac) or just refuse to change (Vista or earlier), Microsoft is offering a FREE UPGRADE to Windows 10 from 7 and 8 and 8.1, I think. At least, I have 7 and I'm being offered it for free.

I just wanna know if it's worth it. I'm afraid it'll break all my programs or something, and then I won't be able to undo the damage.
Last thing I need is all my pirated junk breaking.

i heard about it but am pretty content with windows 7, I suppose that people with windows 8 are cheering with joy though. Unless they are using all them apps, which I doubt.

I'm curious to try it out. Worst-case scenario, I have all my data backed-up and I'm ready to reinstall Windows 7. It looks like it might be pretty cool, but I'm not taking the unnecessary risk.

Still waiting on Windows 9.

I "upgraded" from Windows 7 to 8.1 a little while ago because Windows 7 doesn't have good support for high resolution monitors; it makes everything really small as Windows 8.1 will scale the display and just make the UI components sharper. Windows 8.1 also has Videos which plays the videos I bought on my xbox. I tried out the beta of Windows 10 a long time ago, and while it was a buggy mess at the time, I really liked it.

I would say the upgrade from 7 would be nice, but the upgrade from 8 is a necessity.

I don't see the motivation, for either party. Why would I want to upgrade when I know they'll keep supporting 7 until long after this computer has kicked the bucket, and why would Microsoft give away their new product for free? I find the whole thing baffling.

Basically, people felt that windows 8 was a huge mistake. So they made a new one that windows 8 users can get. But the idea is that it's supposed to be better than 7 so they also get the option.

If the only supposed advantage for gaming is the use of DX12, something my card is unfortunately incapable of, then I have little to no reason to install Windows 10.

It's to be expected. Brand new OS, still buggy.

Is that the NEW RPG Maker 2003 or  Old? Cause I'm about to get Windows 10.

Old, and the more I think of it, it may not be an issue at all with Windows or Rm2k3. The issue only happens when I'm test playing and the game goes full screen. It happens to me fairly often when the game goes into full screen mode or leaves full screen mode. It works just fine if I play the game windowed. There's a good chance it's just a graphics driver issue.

All of my files and programs remained intact and everything else works smoothly. There's a lot of really little things that I like about the OS, but so far I haven't come across anything that is game changing.

I think Cortana has some real potential. I may try to hook up several microphones and speakers up in my apartment and hook Cortana up to my speakers and lights to make my home voice controlled.

That's actually been a problem since at least 8. Fullscreen doesn't work or lags very badly in 1.08, it was fixed in 1.10. There's also a patch for the RPG_RT.exe that fixes it. rm2k3 is such abandonware, it uses DirectDraw.

Ah, guess I didn't check which version I had. I just downloaded the first version I saw online because I lost the one I had saved :( I used rm2k3 in Windows 8.1 and didn't notice any crashes, but it was fairly laggy.

The first thing I opened after upgrading to 10 tonight was rm, and I didn't notice any problems with full screen.  I was using the new steam version.

Setting everything up now. Let's see what the fuss is about.

Despite my lack of interest earlier, I decided it was time for my annual OS reinstall, and this time I'd go for Windows 10, since there has been plenty of time for drivers stuff to get sorted out.

Visually it's nice, and the notification center seems like it could be useful if I messed with it and actually set stuff up to use it. All in all though, things seem about the same when it comes right down to it.  Multi-monitor support seems better though, which is a big plus.

Two months in, and I'm enjoying it. All the problems I had at first have been resolved (manually), and everything's working fine. It's actually pretty nice. No major incompatibilities or driver snafus. The new Start menu is a little annoying, but I'm adjusting.

In regards to the problems, there were some obnoxious issues early on. My DVD drive wasn't being recognized, and I had to play around with some registry files to make it work (ugh), but that's fixed now. I also had an issue right from the start where my PC refused to shutdown and stay shutdown, rebooting on its own every time I tried to power it off. That, too, has been resolved.

I had a friend changing to windows 10, then our terraria nights ended because it couldn't open the game properly anymore. And as Archem pointed out, there are several issues but you kinda need to figure them out yourself.
