Title: Tabletop games
Post by: Prpl_Mage on December 29, 2015, 04:10:36 PM
So what type of tabletop games are y'all interested in playing?

Deck building games?

More like munchkin with drawing of cards?

RPGish dungeons?

Other stuff?

Should they be fast/slow?

Easy to get or complex?

As you might have figured out, I am currently messing around with tabletop simulator and is planning to make something charas related.
So far I've made memory games using facesets, a simple boardgame with an actual bord that you move one based on a dice roll and then I found out that someone made a replica of Smash up, so I'm currently adding my own factions

I like traditional RPGs a lot. Me and my friends also play mtg, and games like Talisman. But I guess rpg computer games sort of have most of those things covered.

as for complexity, the perfect game is simple on the surface and gets more and more complex the better people want to get.

I'm mostly a card game guy (like with Munchkin), though I like plenty of other things.

Munchkin is alright. Personal fan of deck builders, especially Dominion and Ascension. I really like cooperative games like Pandemic and Forbidden Desert/Island, and I've been playing a lot of Betrayal at House on the Hill lately.
I play a lot of tabletop games. They are seriously the best.

Tabletop stuff is fun but not if you have no freinds who also enjoy those mondo tubular activities.  :'(

I love Tabletop Simulator! That said, I also completely forgot that it existed.

Warhammer (loads of it).

How much loads?

I say this as both a semi-ex-Warhammer player and an ex-professional miniature painter. Wargaming has become a huge part of my life in the past few years.

D-did you say Talisman!? When my brother first became a Janitor he used to bring home things they were going to throw out at the school and one of my favorite things he brought back was a little board game that played like D&D or a old style RPG at least. Ahhh fun times! I ad fun even playing it by myself XD I remember looking for it recently and wanting to see if it was still available...and finding out it goes for a crazy price. Sadly it was the only board game besides "Life" and "Chess" I enjoyed much though.

And not to brag but I did create a table top using FFT rules. Also now that I thin about the Star Wars RPG counts as a tabletop when you use figures and stuff right?

Enter: Tabletop Simulator (http://store.steampowered.com/app/286160/).

Oh that is just too cool! =D

It really is. I'm hoping that we could use it to set up some funtimes among the forum-goers. There seems to be a pretty good number of people who are familiar with Tabletop Simulator, tabletop gaming, or both, so it's starting to look good.

I wouldn't mind that! I'll have to get my new Gaurd Key though. The one they assigned me doesn't work and I've been putting off confronting them about it.

Me and Weregnome (try to) play DnD regularly with a few groups of friends, although he's off in England at the moment with his wife. 5th edition is the bee's tits.

Our DM collects a lot of board/card games; some of the most played ones of note are Betrayal at the House on the Hill, Spyfall, Dead of Winter and of course Cards Against Humanity.

Good times. DnD is my most favourite social activity, I think.

Huh, I actually didn't think a lot of people had played betrayal at house on the hill.

Anyway, in a competitive type of game. Do you rather earn points that will eventually declare you winner or do you like to destroy your opponents with health points and stuff like that? I know that games like Hearthstone and Epic spell wars is more of the later where you set out to defeat your opponents and then they are out. But other games are more about earning points and then at the end of the game or when a certain score is reached the game is over.

I suppose the problem is that I've just played with the same people IRL so its hard to tell what people prefer.

I've always preferred the HP style. It allows for comebacks more than point collection styles do.

I've never given it much thought. I play a pretty even mix of both, but I think I prefer games where you gather victory points or something akin to them.
Also, some friends and I started playing Pandemic Legacy the other night. Holy crap, the high amounts of anxiety from that game. It's astounding.

OK need that table top sim. Mondo cool that. But card games to collect points? Sounds to non confrontational to the Zoltmeister. Destroying your enemy is the point of the game! Watching them cower in utter defeat. >:J

But you know it would be interesting to see a system where rack up points by playing combos or using certain powers of cards. Where you can't destroy anything.  Sort like stick piling mana but never using it up. Tubular! Could a game's battle system based of this idea? Maybe an RPG?

Hmm, what if the goal is either to collect enough points or destroy the other player(s)? Would allow the decks to be a bit more varied I suppose.

Right now it's kind of a mix between smash up and hearthstone. You have arenas to play units on, but each player have health that can be depleted. Winning the base earns you gold and victory points. Victory points will lead to victory at 20. Gold can be spent to purchase one of the 3 face up mercenary units on the table. Or to purchase artefacts/spells.

Unit cards have 4 stats at the moment. HP, attack type, physical power, magic power. Attack type decides what stat is used when you attack. The physical power or magical power is used depending on that. So a Troglodyte (1 P 2 1) when attacking will use the physical power (2) in the battle. It will also use the physical power if another unit attacks it and has the p attack type. But if the attacking unit has the M type then the Troglodyte will use its magical power (1).
Right now I can't decide if battles should just be:
If: unit 1 power > unit 2 power, deal 1 damage to unit 2 / destroy unit 2
Or: Unit 1 power - unit 2 power = damage taken on unit 2
Or: (Unit 1 power + die roll) - (unit 2 power + die roll) = how much damage the losing unit takes
Or:
Or: Unit 2 hp - unit 1 power, unit 1 hp - unit 2 power. Where both takes damage like in hearthstone
Or if it's more like: Unit 1 power - unit 2 power = damage taken, if unit 2 survives deal damage to unit 1

In the end it feels like I'm adding to much and making it messy

Comes down to almost one game a week, but usually they're in play sessions, so it's about every 2 weeks I play. Got a ton of 40k armies, Dark Elves for Fantasy, Vampires for Age of Sigmar, and just begun Salamanders for 30k.

So I had this late enlightenment. Tabletop games are like video games but you only need a concept and no coding. Instead of coding things to work you just write some rules on how it should work. Really speed things up from idea to finished product.

It's called game design, Prpl. Game design principles for designing board / tabletop / video games can be used interchangeably a lot. Some ideas work a lot better in certain platforms, and some ideas work in others. In the game design classes I give the students actually start with looking at board games before getting into making video games.

Exactly! It's how I got Game Design taught (I'm not at all working into Game Design but I took some courses). It's a very good way to start.

So I totally dumped my previous idea and started working on a rpg of sorts with inspiration from mage knight and talisman and such.

This is what I got so far.

I'd like to give that a try when you've got it up and running Purp. I'm pretty busy as of now, but as soon as I have some time, I'll be up for a few rounds.

So I'm pretty sure my project is done. The balance might need some tweaking and I suppose some things are not as smooth as they should be. But overall it works and provides a challenge

Perhaps a game night should be set up.

Perhaps I should call it a game "night", given how time zones work...

6th session of this DnD campaign this weekend
it's going to be good; the set up from the previous session is so f'ed up that it's going to be a disaster, and that's great.

Does the game have any story elements build into it, or did you just flesh out the mechanics? I'm interested to see what you came up with!

Well no, there is some sort of back story about a legendary cure called Panacea but that's about it. Since it felt kinda boring to have the same quest every playthrough I made 19 different "goals" for the game. I suppose I should make some sort of story for each quest when starting and ending the game though like those other games with the story in the manual. Like Betrayal at house on the hill, Zombiecide and Dead of winter.

The original plan was to make each "room" also have a "room event card" that triggered a specific effect when drawing the room (much like betrayal on the house) but it didn't turn out good so I skipped it.

Interesting. I really like goal-based tabletop games, because its not always very clear how you are doing with respect to the people you are playing against and so it adds this extra level of competition.

For example, in Ticket To Ride you have destination cards that give you extra points for connecting two specific cities, and everyone has their own destinations that no one else is aware of.

Goal based? I haven't seen many of those o.o Sounds interesting though. It'd be like side quests and the like to keep the game going?

Let's get a card game together! A custom game, or maybe Cards Against Humanity.
