Title: What's your occupation?
Post by: Apex on May 13, 2016, 02:24:57 AM
Just out of curiosity, what does everyone do for a living? Do you have a full-time job, part-time, or are you a student? Maybe you're a bum? Do you like your job? Do you have aspirations to do, or become something else? Tell us about it!

I've been working as an English teacher in Japan for the last three years. This year I'm working in three elementary schools and two junior high schools. I've had to teach at a few kindergartens in the past as well. It's a fun job, and I've recently moved to a small community near Kobe, where all the school sizes are tiny, with only one class per grade. The job's fun, but it doesn't pay well enough to raise a family, so I'm either trying to find an alternative job translating back in America, or work my way higher up in my company as an office worker/ manager.

Never thought I'd be working with kids though.

Running a company with a friend, we're on our fifth year now. In the past we mostly done consulting for educational mobile games, these days we're doing a lot of VR stuff.

It's fun, stressful and frustrating at times.

Not sure what I would do if we shut down the company, probably try to score some programming job.

Me and the SO work at Pizza Hut.

She does jewelry craft and taxidermy related stuff, makes bone jewelry and that jazz. Sells pretty well.
I do music composure. The money my albums get are small, but its money none-the-less.

Altogether we're surviving. :D

As Apex I teach English as a second language but in Sweden as well as religion classes(not as frightening as it sounds) in upper secondary school. It's stressful and interesting at the same time to follow the kids as they grow up. Just never imagined that my role would include: educator, mentor, CSO, therapist, janitor and tech support.

I'll probably do this for another 40 years or so. So yeah.

I'm a Pharmacist in the United States. I evaluate and dispense prescription medications written for by physicians, check for interactions with preexisting therapies, consult on general health awareness, and provide vaccinations. I bothered to get my doctorate but the dang thing is worthless (No hiring companies outside of hospitals care if you are a Doctor of Pharmacy or just a Registered Pharmacist).
Currently at a Walgreens. Will probably switch companies some time in the next year.

I'm a QA for a software company. I've been here three years. It is pretty fun, not just because it's a nice office (pool table, Xboxes, table tennis, nice people, free lunch), but also because I have a surprising amount of say in what goes on as a QA.

I dont know if I want to do it forever but it's one of those things: keep doing what you're good at or start again from scratch?

Farmer. Forever a farmer till the industrial sector expands too far this way and takes my land. I also am looking into writing E-Books but honestly? I don't really have a real 'job'. More a profession I was born to and eventually just accepted.

I mean when I was a chicken farmer I didn't mind, only made a little profit and mostly they ate it, but I happy. Then....one day I wasn't and I found myself taking care of cows for the meat and money and cause it's what my family mostly did. Gardening gives me no joy and I worry every time I go out there I'll be stung and that'll be it. Done in by a bee allergy. But I always come back to writing. It fills me with passion and makes me feel like my life is worthwhile. Wheras farming fills my belly but my soul is empty.

PhD in Astrophysics. Finishing in September, hopefully will get a position afterwise. A lot of people think it's amazing, but it is actually not, just sitting in front of a computer for hours coding in Fortran, C, C++ or Python. Kinda boring, hence why I don't hardcode for the games I make.

Well... This is a quite old topic, but I might answer it now that it was bumped. I will be delivering newspapers as a summer job until my first Computer Science semester starts on 17th October.

If anyone remembers me, I'm currently a full-time student at Columbia University and a Stock Associate at Duane Reade. (Think Walgreens for New Yorkers.) I'm trying for Digital Marketing/Search-Engine Optimization or Market Research Analysis as a career. I'm also an Air Force vet.

This is the exact reason I logged in.
