Title: Tiny Box Tim Day: A Holiday for Helping Others
Post by: Kilyle on June 20, 2016, 08:30:45 AM
I am breezing back in briefly to notify y'all (as a community I value, despite being largely absent from it nowadays) of an upcoming holiday.  Short notice, but it's on June 28th.

I created this holiday, and have managed to get a couple handfuls of people interested in the idea.  I also made a video explaining it, which is on YouTube and is called "June 28th (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD7Pj1mpkk4)."  But that's just if you want the full explanation, with associated reasoning and such (mostly related to Markiplier, but also some info on charities -- people donate more in winter, but summer brings its own challenges to a lot of charities, and June 28th is practically the opposite side of Christmas).

The short version is:

I've gotten enough positive feedback that I hope at least a couple dozen people join in this year, and maybe some more next year.  I had hoped it would be bigger this year (I started spreading the idea around back in November, but only got the video up recently because my video-editing skills are not particularly fast or efficient), but hey, there's still time, maybe it might be.

The holiday was originally aimed at fans of Markiplier, but it's not by any means restricted to them.  Join in if you like!

I love the fact that I come back to find 78 views of this thread (it's my favorite number).

Well, didn't get the couple dozen I had hoped for (or at least, only one person ever used the hashtag... it's possible others participated without going on Twitter).  However, some eighty people watched my video explaining the event, half a dozen commented (very positively), one guy did a 24-hour charity livestream that raised 25 pounds (about $34), and a webcomic artist responded to my email (thanking them for inspiring me) by looking up Tiny Box Tim Day and then donating to ShelterBox -- and asking me to remind them next year because they'll probably do something more official.  And it's not a tiny or amateur webcomic, either!  I was kinda shocked at that.

I gave a care box to a homeless guy I know, who enjoyed everything except the Vienna sausages, which he gave back to me instead.  I helped my nephew make a care box, which was done with pink duct tape, and which he shortly dubbed "Care Box Felicia," girlfriend of Tiny Box Tim -- fitting, since guess who shares a birthday with Markiplier?  Felicia Day.  Who even played his wife on a skit once.  (My nephew has no reason to know Felicia Day.  It's a serendipity.)

My other nephew and niece, we've got the supplies all ready but they haven't made the boxes yet, so it's a bit late.  But we'll being putting them together next time they're over, and then driving around trying to find homeless people to give them to.  (Homeless people are sadly not hard to find in my town and the next town over.)

So it was a smaller celebration than I was hoping for, but it still did good, and it looks like next year there might be more momentum.  Plus, hey, a reason to thank the ones who've made a difference in your life (whether they've helped you, encouraged or inspired you, or whatever) is a good thing, regardless of anything else.

Good job. Getting people involved is always a difficult thing, especially these days when twitter and facebook is bursting with people trying to create awareness for different things.

I don't like Vienna sausages either.
