Title: Serial Killer Novels, any recommendations?
Post by: Relux the Relux on October 01, 2016, 05:14:08 PM
So... I received some bookstore credit for my birthday which I used to further my Lovecraft collection. However, I still have some left so I am wanting to get something involving a serial killer. So would you guys have any recommendations? Preferably something where the serial killer is an actual chracter and not just a force of kill.

Bonus points if it is in a unusual setting.

No idea about contemporary English literature to be honest.

Swedish novels are usually the sort of detective/ crime novel that is likely to sport a serial killer of some sort but I doubt they get translated much

I haven't read the books themselves, but the TV series Dexter is based off of a series of books. If they're anything like the show, they'd be phenomenal.

Nothing gnarly comes to mind, Seven Arts Brah. What you're talking about isn't a protagonist that's very common. You barely ever see it in games and TV, let alone novels. The problem being if you ask somebody about it they'll think you're a mondo evil person yourself or just plain creepy.   _sweat_

Would you have any specific examples or author in mind? I would try to search and maybe I would be able to find something.

Yeah, my beta tester told me the same thing. Although Darkly Dreaming Dexter seems very interesting it is a bit too vigilant-esque for what I am seeking.

I just spent around an hour thinking "Seven Arts" was some serial killer novel, until I noticed it was a vocative expression because of my game. XD

But yes, it's too bad that it isn't something that is more explored as it poses so many possibilities, as serial killers are the motif of self-gratification at the cost of the other taken to an extreme. Especially, if someone would take it to a setting where is not usually used, like fantasy or steam/cyberpunk.

Oh well, I guess I am going to check either Dark Dreamy Dexter or Silence of the Lambs, then. And to think that this all started with an MLP fanfic [, and no it wasn't cupcakes].)

Thanks to everyone who tried to give any recommendation until now. o/

The books are fantastic, but a hella more macabre than the TV show. He's also nowhere near as nice as he is in the TV show, and is a bit of a sadist, and that's taking into consideration
the whole sociopath/murderer thing.

Recently read A Boy and His Dog by Harlan Ellison. While not a serial killer, it is from the perspective of a killer. The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is always a good one if you can stand the classics. And as mentioned before, the Dexter series is fun. I prefer the story the books take over the show (except book 3).

Well they aren't exactly serial killer depending on which path you take but in the Geoncide Path I'd bet any Chara fic would qualify as Chara's whole purpose is to cause murder and mayham again and again...and again.
