Title: Kuest
Post by: Momeka on June 11, 2018, 10:46:12 AM
So there was this event thing on rpgmaker.net to make a dumb game in 11 hours. So decided to give it a try, ended up spending 10 hours and 43 minutes on it and had to cut some stuff that I had planned, but the end result is: Kuest

(https://i.imgur.com/htKZqzP.gif) (https://i.imgur.com/mLNSJ6Q.gif)

It's a dungeon crawler where you have to save some priests from a dragon. Collect loot and decide what you should carry with you and leave behind as you only have two slots. At the moment the game is pretty unbalanced, didn't really have time to playtest that much. The end boss is way too easy and the game is probably unbeatable if you go with an intelligence based build.

Thinking of putting in some extra hours and make an updated version that's a bit more balanced and add some stuff I had to cut. But until then, feedback would be appreciated.

Can't try it atm but love the style, also a neat idea with the weapons. Although it probably wouldv'e worked better in a more actiony setting.

Definitely following this thread.  Once I am done with MoSV, I am so giving this a shot.  It looks really fun.

Looks fantastic for the time spent!

What do you code in? Suddenly had an idea... If you made the framework for a randomised dungeon crawler like this, we could all take the code and add randomised content and make something that was very cool and different every time...

Dude that looks retro and tight! I'm gonna give it a go!

This is mondo coolio! How can you go into a game challenge to make a square game and come out with this gnarly schweet looking thing?

Cool, let me know what you think.

Thanks! It's just rpg maker 2003. I like that idea, but I would probably have to redo the game in something else to make it more feasible.

Thanks. Dunno, you sit down, make game. Sitting down is optional though, you can stand as well.

Looking great!
I loved all of your games so far, I'm sure this one won't be an exception. Downloading and playing tonight :D

i just wOkay, so as promised, I would try this game.  I just want you to know, it reminds me of the old days of computer games.  Meaning...  I LOVED IT!!!  If you decide to come up with a sequel, let me know because I am so in.  I love these retro style games.  The graphics, the sfx, everything.  They are not super complicated like my arch nemesis the toaster, and yet not simple to play.  This is the kind of stuff I knew as a child, and seeing them again brings me... feelings of some kind.  You have paws up from me.

It is not. Ok I didn't go FULL intelligence because you said it'd be unbeatable, but my intelligence was the highest and it was ok.
I should try a full intelligence one next.
Great game otherwise. It's pretty well balanced for a game made in such a short amount of time, I've seen much worse.
I should start doing game jams, maybe I'll actually finish a second game for good then  ;D

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Jams are great (except when it's really stressful)! Good for testing quick throwaway ideas and see what sticks.

I'm working on an updated version. It won't really be a sequel but it will have some fixes and additional content. Been working a bit on the title screen today:

I love the title screen thingy, but it looks a bit too fancy for the style of the game.
Maybe you plan to update the graphics in the new version though so don't mind me.

Yeah, I'm changing up the game a lot. Remaking the graphics style to one I like working with more, changing some systems and adding some new.

Still very wip, but it will look something like this:

Thanks, just don't have too high expectations >>

This is like an entirely different game.

The core is still there, collect items and fight monsters. Just spicing it up a bit. Adding classes that have some perks and set stats and over the course of the three levels I want to hint at some sort of backstory for them. Just haven't figured it all out yet.

Just competed the first vsrsion. Magic Maul FTW ^_^ It was fun learning to do a balanced canpaign then yrikg a challenge of trying to max each stat and see if I could go through. Your AI was simple but fun by the way.

Cool to see you're spicing it up and adding classes and stuff as I was thinking that was all it was lacking.

Is the knight-caterpillar a thing or just an engine test?

Also I love how there is a smaller thumbnail of the interface during the timer.

Nah, just engine test. You won't have five knights with you. Some classes will have a follower with them, the knight will have a squire and the mage will have a familiar. And then you can hire a mercenary in cities that also follows you around. These types of followers will help you out in battle, jump in from time to time to either attack the enemy or heal you.
Besides that thinking of having escort quest where you need to lead people out of the dungeon and back to the city.

I'm also playing around with the idea of having some enemies that will attach themselves to your party and follow you around. Then in battles they will jump in and attack you.

Echoing what Fish said, that companion AI is already my favourite thing in the game : p

Red, that water effect would have been gorgeous enough but tying it into a dungeon generator is just beyond beautiful.  The HID sits well on the screen too I think.

Are you using the built-in generator of RM2k3?
I've never been able to obtain something nice with it, and I tried xD

Looks gorgeous as always though

Nah, it's not the built in one, it's so terrible. Tried it a couple of times but never gotten anything usable from it.

Built my own since I want to generate the maps in run time.

It'd be nice to see how you built it, it might be useful for people who try random dungeons.

I've made one when Tower was still a thing, but it was far from perfect and the project died before I finished the generator.

Can send you the project if you want. But be warned the generator is kinda messy and hacked together.

Nah, not close. Not sure I'm going to finish it actually don't have a good idea for the story and not too happy with the battle system. Maybe I'll redo it or maybe I'll move onto something else. Haven't decided yet.

Kind of just echoing what everyone else has already said, but this is gorgeous. Kuest 1.5 looks a lot more like Kuest 2. Even if you don't finish it, I think that companion system tied with the battle system and dungeon crawling is a winning combination, I'm not so sure you really need to worry about a storyline with gameplay like that.

Yeah, kind of tempted to change it to be more like 1, just a puzzle rpg thing. It was the original plan but the more I worked on it the more it started to morph into something more akin of a standard rpg.
