Title: Contest time?
Post by: Prpl_Mage on September 04, 2018, 06:02:09 PM
So I realized that our last contest was 1 year ago, which is crazy. Time sure flies.

But I want to get a tradition of contests going here. Halloween times have worked out pretty well in the past while Christmas/Yuletide is more of a family thing. Then we have time for college examns and papers and stuff, don't want to make it collide with that mess. People also seem to have a lot of things going on during summers.

So I'm gonna present my suggestion here:
Spring contest - Around March-April
Autuum Contest  Around September-October

It seems doable right? And people might remember it if it happens regularly.

Anyway, who are up for an contest now in September-October?
And what type of contest would you like it to be?
My suggestions are:
Spriting again, because that's relevant.
Mapmaking, so I'm forcing you to use any type of maker.
Writing, we can all write, and that was the last thing we did.

What I want to avoid:
Making an entire game
Some really complicated stuff

It's been decided that at the start of November a contest to create a mini game or any other type of short game will commence. The game itself should only consist of one map of 20x15 tiles.
I might stretch for 2 maps if you decide to do a custom fancy title screen.
Contest duration: 2 weeks?
Judging: Voting?
Theme: None

Oh yeah! I'm down to making something.

Spriting sounds fun, it's been a long time since I just sprited something without the purpose of being used for a game or site.

We could do like micro stories. Set a character limit of say 256 or something and you have to tell a small story with it.

Another thing I thought about a while ago, it's gamedev but it's really small. So you have to make a game just using one map with the smallest size in rm2k3. And no hacking it with pictures and stuff, it has to be tiles and you have to use the default character movements. You need to be able to lose/win the game.

Or we could take some old score based game and see who can get the highest score.

Make a three panel comic.

I like the idea of the mini map game, though I have no idea what I'd do : ) But sure I'll take part in whatever we decide.

Sounds like fun!
I'd be in :D

Maybe not so thrilled by the spriting contest, but that's because I'm rather bad at it. It could force me though!

Okay, so how about we try that Minigame / One map game thing? We've never done it before so it might grant some exciting results.
I assume we'll go with rpgm2k3 as always?

Starting in October or such is my plan

I'm down, will probably be something really small and stupid. I'm pretty busy throughout october.

Mini game could be nice, just have to find something that could be interesting

Should we have some sort of theme or other conditions for participants to adhere to or is it challenging enough as it is?

Let folk's imaginations go wild, I say. No need to restrict this further.

I have 4 gigs in October and a few events and things but I'll do my best!

Yeah, think it's enough of a restriction.

I'm not sure I will be able to do something either, traveling and got a game I want to finish for October but I'm going to try my best.

All of these seem like good ideas. Keeping things simple will open it up to more people.

Okay if two of the four interested participants are busy in October, how 'bout November?

October is going to be a bit busy for me too. November sounds good.

The contest should start soon, and while reviewing the thing I was wondering if we keep this part? Which would mean no pictures at all, right? Just to see what we are allowed to do or not, so we don't lose time on ideas that would require pictures. I'm asking because I got an idea last week that would fit nicely in the contest (I haven't developed it, waiting for it to start officially), and it might require some pictures for a HUD - but I won't be sure until I start the programmation.

I think pictures should be allowed. More meant that pictures shouldn't be a way to get around the one map limit. Like oh only one map is allowed so I make shoot em up only using pictures, or like I make all my maps as pictures and then I just switch pics instead of maps.
But I feel it should be fine for huds, custom menus/systems etc.

That's what I thought you meant - it's always better to ask to make sure though ;)

I'm thinking, as long as the character is a charset and the map is a tileset then it's all good.

And even if I restricted you to like 3 pictures it would be really easy to get around in the steam version since the picture update

Just gonna throw my 2 cents in and I like the one map restriction. Picture restriction could be fine but I don't see it necessary. I'm not sure much more restriction than that is necessary.
