Title: Microgame Contest
Post by: Prpl_Mage on November 02, 2018, 09:30:42 PM
Starting November 2 a 3-week contest is on.
This contest is about creating a microgame using only a single map, if a game seems hard to do; a mini game or heck - just a map with a puzzle to solve, will be just dandy.

Rules: Make a game that can be won by playing.
Limitations: The game itself should only consist of one map of 20x15 tiles. (Exception to 2 maps, if one of them is a custom title screen)
Contest duration: 3 weeks (November 2-23)
Judging: Voting? I might convince a guy to play all games and give it a score if we want something different. (But he might be biased)
Theme: None

I would really appreciate if I could get a PM by next friday from the people who are participating, or just a reply in this thread, if I'm gonna convince that guy to play and such then I need to know how many games we're talking.

Current number of participants: 5

Well, I'm in. I got an idea for a game, might be to complicated to finish within the time but going to give it a try.

As for judging, I'm down for what ever. I'm also down for not making a contest and just an even with us making games together.

I'm in too.
Started thinking more deeply on the concept, now I will try to develop a mini scenario and will code all of it.
Might do more after the contest, I'm not entirely sure all my graphics will be finished properly...

This sounds cool! Got rm2k3 on Steam a while back for cheap, so I might delve back into it :D

Oh awesome! Do it, Zuhane!

I've gotten started. Still very doubtful if I'll make it in time, decided to do a dungeon crawling deck-building game. Probably not the best idea with the deadline but been wanting to try and make one for awhile. So lets go!

Damn, gotta find a different theme for my game. It was supposed to be a road trip in a post alien attack-world.

Ah man, I'm sure our games will be different enough. No need to abandon your idea.

Now it's a caravan in a perpetual night instead so no worries. Concept stays the same but gotta change some terms and art. Good that I did it now while it's still in a planning stage

Ran into a hitch with the game but it's on track again.

One week has passed since the contest started. Do everyone feel satisfied with the 3 week deadline btw? I figured that if I give you a month then yall might do ambitious things that don't finish in time.

What the hell, I was literally just gonna make a simon-says style mini-game and look at you over here.

To be honest, yours is a much more realistic goal. If it wasn't Momeka we're talking about then I'd assume it will never be done in time.

Yeah, I probably won't make it in time (not that surprising) but been distracted by other things. I'll at least try to have something playable by the end.

No need to extend the deadline for me though. Mainly using this as a start of for something I can continue to work on afterwards.

It might be short for me, but that0s because everyone in my family decided to wake up and come visit me; and my brother's baby arrived a month earlier than initially planned. I can only work on it on weekdays then but I'll make something. My idea is not too difficult, I just need to get started with the programming. I was busy planning last week.

Hy guys, sorry I've been doing stuff: I'll have a go making something for this contest, apologies for no notification! : ) (Probably won't be amazing either)

I may be way over my head as well. I've done a lot of work in common events but so far all I have are calculations and such, nothing to show for. I'm not even sure if all these parts works together as a unit when I try to puzzle them together on the map.
Anyway, I might end up using RTP graphics just to have something but I'm gonna finish by next week even if the game isn't what I intended.

Half way through my game and I think I may have succeeded in making the most boring game ever :0

It's actually spectacularly boring :p We'll have to see how you find it haha

So you're saying you're all going to be conquered by a simple Simon Says game. *twirl mustachio*

That might actually be the case.

My testing continues, and everything seems to work although it's quite simple. Despite my better judgement I spent more time on resources than I should. So far this is all I have to show.

You are very correct, actually buckled down and used the backdrops from the first 3 games. Making trees and caves have never been my thing. Anything to save time, only 5 more days now.

So this is what the game looks like right now, the actual map, like Momeka I figured I could just have the map be an actual map, scale it down to look like a "world" and make the character a representation of where you are. His obviously looks way better than mine. (and mine lacks actual land, it's just the hero and the "locations you visit")

Sorry I have to drop, my mum got in the hospital for a very serious injury with surgery on Friday and I will not have time to carry on the game. I'll finish it once she's better, but now I have to deal with all the family members around coming up to show her support and stuff, I have to help her with some basic stuff since she can't move much and I don't see the end of it before the deadline. Sorry, I hope I can at least finish it next month to show you what I had planned. :/

Looking good Prpl !

@Prpl: That looks awesome! Can't wait to play it

@Donut: Sorry to hear. Hope everything works out.

So on Saturday I decided there's no way I'm going to have anything playable ready. So put the deckbuilding game on hold and started doing a pretty simple dungeon exploring thing.

Just got to do some simplistic battle system and some cutscene. If nothing goes wrong I should have something for the deadline.

One more day to go, will people be able to finish by the deadline or should I extend it to the weekend?

My game is currently working, I was positively surprised by that fact. However there are some serious game balance issues that I have to take care of before tomorrow

Yeah, I'll just need to add some audio and I will be ready. I'll do it tonight.

Edit:
Had some time over on my lunch break so finished it up: [Crypt of the Fungal Lord] (http://momeka.com/files/cryptofthefungallord.zip)
It's pretty basic, wanted to add a battle system as well but didn't have time for it.

And then I missed the deadline myself. Some parenting stuff interrupted me and I didn't manage to fix the last stuff (sound, title screen). I'll post it here tonight

Also, everyone post a link here or PM me and I'll make a new thread for this tonight. Didn't manage to get a judge so I'll draft something.

Still haven't received any more games from the rest of the gang.
Posting my link here regardless and I'l make the thread once I get a few more.

Oh sorry prpl I didn't notice that we had a deadline and thought this was for the entirety of the month.

I have some done but it's not in a state that people will want to play it, I'm afraid!

No worries, it seems like you were not the only one.
So far only Momeka was on time, I submitted my own late. None of the others have sent me anything.

My plan is this though.
We'll do a secret santa thing with these games. I'll randomize everyone who participated and send a game to that person who then plays through it and gives it a short review(based on some set questions).
When you're done you post that thing in the thread I'm gonna start so everyone gets a good idea of what the game is about.
Hopefully that will lead to people being involved in playing it.

Since this whole deadline thing didn't work as intended it feels weird to do a contest with actual voting, unless you guys really want it. Instead I figure we can post this on the main page and maybe upload it on our Itch as some sort of "5 games in 1" package.

Oh well.

Come on, man, I get you're disappointed but it's hard to stick to a deadline with life going on!

I sunk quite a bit of time into this awful game as well ;_;

I'll send you what I have, but it'll make you want to kill yourself hahaha

Sent as promised. You'll get the idea, anyway. It ruins the mood of the game, but to speed it up you can use the clock in your room. Don't spam it TOO quickly however as customers might start glitching if multiple events are active in quick succession.

Awesome, I need to try it based on that description alone.

Well we have 3 games, I can work with that. Gonna randomize and then send the games to the two of you and make a thread with the questions to answe

So I finished the game I wanted to make for the contest last week! Or rather, something I had time to do, as my original idea would have taken way too much time.

I also submitted it to the "RPG Maker game in an hour" Jam on itch.io this morning since I realised I coded it in a bit less than an hour - as it was a microgame, I didn't do something too wild, otherwise it would have taken me too much time that I didn't have with my mum being bad - despite planning it for about a week (but the planning didn't count for the jam so I went "why not". There's a bug somewhere but I think I can't fix it (i had an idea how to fix it but it wasn't smooth in the end)

You can get it there: https://pezamaury.itch.io/starr-mirror-jam (if you want to add it to the bundle; otherwise just a freebie)
